  2. Photo: The average Australian wedding now costs $48,296. So is it not surprising that a growing number of couples are now choosing elopement, or something like it?

Sydney couple Lorraine Murphy and Wade Tink (pictured) recently got married on a doorstep in Bondi where they had met three years earlier, followed by a party with around 80 friends and family who thought they were there to celebrate the couple’s joint 30th birthdays. At the party, they announced they had just married 'and the whole ceiling just lifted', says Lorraine http://ow.ly/fcAyl.

Does this sort of wedding - low-key and inexpensive - appeal to you? Or do you think it's one of those occasions in life where a big celebration is the only way to go?
  3. Photo: The re-election of Barack Obama in the US and the handover of power to Xi Jinping in China have the potential to create a new paradigm in the world order.

A special forum tonight, broadcast on www.smh.com.au from 6pm, will feature Liberal MP Malcolm Turnbull, former prime minister Kevin Rudd, SMH political and international editor Peter Hartcher and Professor Geoff Garrett, Dean of the University of Sydney Business School.

The forum will consider how China will change under Xi Jinping and what Obama's re-election means for the US. It will ask what these changes in the two superpowers mean for their economies, social structures and relationship with each other and Australia. It will pose the question: are we on track to defeat the weight of historical precedent and avoid war between a rising great power and the reigning one?

The forum will consider Australia in this context, and ask whether we need to change our approach to accommodate this changing dynamic.

We invite you to ask a question - simply leave it as a comment below. The best will be selected for discussion by the panel.
  4. Photo: It's one of Sydney's greatest missing person mysteries.

But 23 years on, no one knows what happened to Mary Wallace. Police and her family are hoping today's announcement of a $100,000 reward might finally bring some answers: http://ow.ly/fcsMM.
  5. Photo: According to his father, Xavier Di Petta is your everyday 16-year-old. He goes to school, plays computer games and on the weekends plays Aussie rules with his mates.

There's just one small difference - Di Petta is an entrepreneur who makes up to $50,000 a month: http://ow.ly/fcqsi.

  7. Photo: Looking for somewhere new to go this weekend? Try one of Sydney's rooftop bars, for a brew with a view.

Sydney is late to the rooftop party, but it's making up for lost time. At least 20 bars are now perched on city roofs, and the City of Sydney is pushing for more, including what will be Sydney's first rooftop cinema.

Here's some of the best: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/bars-under-the-stars-become-an-open-secret-20121109-2938r.html

  10. Photo: Howzat! for a marvellous message? When our reporter Christine Sams asked cricket commentator extraordinaire Richie Benaud about working in the commentary box, he sent us an email reminiscing about his long-time role at Nine.

1.15pm update: Labor frontbencher Bill Shorten has also said he was not sure a royal commission was the right response. 'I am not convinced that having a royal commission is going to fix the faults,' he said.

Do you agree with them? Or do you think there is a need for a royal commission?

  12. Photo: Pick the fake ...

A former flight attendant who falsely claimed to be in business with James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch conned 16 investors out of up to $8.5 million by pretending to be a wealthy, well-connected music industry executive, a court has heard.

Dimitri De Angelis sent his victims doctored photographs of himself with the Dalai Lama, Vladimir Putin, the Queen and former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and boasted of cooking meals for John Howard at Kirribilli House.

Read the story and see more copies of the photos he doctored of himself with world leaders: http://ow.ly/f8T77.
  13. Photo: Peter FitzSimons on St John's: Given time, great colleges learn to fix their problems, he writes.

''Are such rituals and excesses the substance of college life? That was not remotely my experience, and I don't believe it is the experience of most who go to such colleges.''

  15. Photo: Following years of debate about trying to censor the internet, the Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, says federal government has abandoned its long-standing commitment to introduce a national internet filter: http://ow.ly/f8zUQ.

The government will instead ban websites related only to child abuse.

Do you think this is a good decision? How involved do you think the federal government should be in the regulation of the internet?

  17. Photo: What do you think of this idea? A novel approach has come out of a study which found people were less likely to eat an energy-dense snack food when its label specified how much exercise it would take to burn off its calorie content. The label on a chocolate bar, for example, might say it would take 40 minutes of running to burn off its calorie content. It also found that labels with only calorie information had little or no impact on people's behaviour: http://ow.ly/f7b4f.

Do you think people would be less likely to eat junk food if its label stated how much exercise it would take to burn it off? Do you think there's a need to reduce the amount of junk food we eat, or should it be up to the individual to make their own health decisions?

  18. Photo: Polling genius Nate Silver has proven dispassionate maths is more reliable than pundit intuition and cherry-picked polls, accurately tipping the US election results of 49 out of 50 states (and he's likely to be right about the 50th state - Florida - as well).

As right-wing pundits attacked him and his “voodoo statistics” for failing to see that the election was on a knife edge – and in the case of some conservative wingnuts, for being openly gay and “effeminate” – Silver held his nerve and for the entire election cycle maintained that the data always pointed to an easy Obama victory. The Macquarie Group is believed to be in talks with Mark Bouris' listed Yellow Brick Road Group over a distribution deal that could be unveiled as early as this week.

The deal would give Yellow Brick Road access to the billions of dollars sitting on Macquarie's balance sheet to provide home loans via Mr Bouris' network of more than 140 branches across the country. Read the story here: http://ow.ly/f4EDr.

Barely eight months ago, on March 4, the seven men were among 33 students who were suspended for allegedly being involved in the now infamous ''O'' Week ritual that left a teenage girl close to death in hospital.

To round off an eventful year, seven of the 33 have now seized all but two positions on next year's college council, including the top three of president, secretary and treasurer: http://ow.ly/f2Eal.

  38. Photo: Opinion: The ALP fears most a Coalition switch to Malcolm Turnbull, the closest thing there is in politics to a sure thing. Labor is also wary of Scott Morrison, who harbours ambition and has a reputation for ruthlessness. Julie Bishop would also want to be considered if there was a move.

However, the word inside the Coalition is if Tony Abbott is hit by the proverbial bus, Joe Hockey would get the nod, writes Phillip Coorey: http://ow.ly/f0Wud.

Do you think Mr Hockey would make a good leader of the Opposition...or Prime Minister? And do think he would be a better leader than Mr Abbott?
