Why do Quantcast Audience reports include both people and cookies?

Quantcast is the only measurement service to provide audience data for both unique cookies counts and people. The Quantcast inference-based direct measurement model takes into account numerous factors including the frequency of visitation and the respective balance between work and home access to build a translation of cookies to people that is unique to each digital media property.

The model was introduced in June 2008 and is detailed here.

What is the difference between Quantified and non-Quantified Audience data?

Through the Quantcast Publisher program, Quantcast provides audience and demographic data for over 100 million web destinations including websites, video, widgets, blogs, and advertising campaigns. Though we welcome all digital media publishers and marketers to have their media assets Quantified at no cost, some have not yet done so.

As a courtesy, Quantcast provides ‘rough’ audience estimates for non-Quantified digital media properties. These rough estimates are just that – far from perfect. We strongly recommend non-Quantified publishers refine the accuracy of our reporting on their audience activity by measuring your web properties at absolutely no cost.

Of what self-regulatory program is Quantcast a member?

Quantcast has joined the Digital Advertising Alliance (“DAA”), the cross-industry coalition driving the AdChoices icon and has withdrawn its membership from the Network Advertising Initiative (“NAI”).

Through the DAA, consumers can opt out of data collection and targeted advertising at http://www.aboutads.info/. Like others in the DAA, Quantcast complies with the Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising.

There is a wide collection of organizations that are part of the DAA – including the IAB, DMA, 4A’s, NAI, AAF, ANA and the BBB – and these represent an important larger cross section of the constituencies involved in online advertising industry. As such we feel it is the most appropriate fit for Quantcast’s business. The DAA’s cross-industry Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising apply consumer-friendly standards to online behavioral advertising across the Internet.

Recently, Quantcast partnered with the DAA to provide our customers with the Ad Choices Icon for free, enabling consumers to learn more about the information collected for ads they see online and giving them the opportunity to opt-out. Quantcast will continue to focus on user privacy because we know that user trust is paramount.

To find out more and to opt out ofQuantcast, please go to the DAA opt-out page at: www.aboutads.info/choices or the Quantcast Opt-Out page.

Why did Quantcast withdraw from the NAI?

We joined the Network Advertising Initiative (“NAI”) when it was the sole self-regulatory program for OBA. With the development of the DAA’s cross-industry program, applicable to a variety of different business models, we felt that the DAA program provided a better fit for our business. Specifically, the DAA includes the IAB, DMA, BBB, ANA, NAI, AAF and 4A’s to focus on promoting the industry-wide Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising. Quantcast is a strong supporter of this program.

Is Quantcast in compliance with the NAI Code?

Quantcast is compliant with the DAA’s Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising. In addition, we have partnered with the DAA to provide our customers with the Ad Choices Icon, enabling consumers to learn more about the information collected for ads they see online and to give them the opportunity to opt-out. Quantcast passed the NAI’s 2010 code-compliance audit. Due to its withdrawal, Quantcast will not be re-evaluated as part of the NAI’s 2011 review process.
