    Hemet man accused of sending sexually explicit material to minor

    A 34-year-old Riverside County man has been arrested on suspicion of sending sexually explicit material to a minor, authorities said.

    David Roman, who lives in Hemet, allegedly arranged to meet with the minor. But he was arrested by investigators who had launched a surveillance operation after being alerted about the explicit material, according to authorities.

    16-year-old girl recants rape story, authorities say

    A 16-year-old girl who said she was knocked unconscious and raped in Santa Clarita by two men has recanted her story, authorities said Wednesday night.

    The reported rape sent law enforcement authorities scrambling Tuesday to find the attackers and prompted local school officials to alert parents, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

    Ex-coach accused on YouTube held in molestation case

    A former Rosemead wrestling coach who was accused of molestation by an alleged victim on YouTube was arrested in Mexico, authorities said Wednesday night.

    Herbert Ortiz, 29, recently came to the attention of authorities after he visited the U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara to get a travel visa for Guatemala, according to authorities.

    O.C. man shot girlfriend until he ran out of ammo, D.A. says

    An Orange County man is set to be arraigned Thursday for the fatal shooting of his live-in girlfriend during a confrontation, prosecutors said.

    Thomas Michael Wilhelm, 48, was indicted by a grand jury last month and faces one felony count of murder, according to a statement from the Orange County district attorney's office. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prison.

    Cross found in Northern California identified as the Mojave cross

    Mojave National Preserve officials confirmed Wednesday that the cross found Monday on a roadside in Northern California once stood in the Mojave Desert.

    Rangers at the preserve were helped in their identification by Henry Sandoz, who constructed and raised the seven-foot metal pipe cross in 1998 in violation of park regulations.

    'Innocence of Muslims' filmmaker gets a year in prison

    A federal judge on Wednesday sentenced the filmmaker behind "Innocence of Muslims,” the anti-Islam film that sparked rioting across the globe, to a year behind bars after the man admitted to violating the terms of his release from an earlier conviction.

    Mark Basseley Youssef admitted to four violations,including lying to his probation officer and using bogus names. In exchange,prosecutors dropped four other counts, including allegations that Youssef lied in saying thathis role in the film's production was limited to writing the script. Youssef was under a type of federal probation -- known as supervised release -- after being convicted in 2010 of bank and credit-card fraud, in which he was accused ofcausing $800,000 in losses.

    Two stabbed at El Segundo business; suspect arrested

    A suspect was in custody Wednesday after stabbing two people at a business in El Segundo, authorities said.

    It was not immediately known what sparked the incident, which took place around 12:45 p.m. in the 100 block of Center Street, according to an official with the El Segundo Police Department.

    Tom Hanks among alleged fraud victims of indicted insurance broker

    Actor Tom Hanks is among four victims of a Thousand Oaks insurance agent who was arrested Wednesday morning after a federal grand jury indicted him for mail fraud, alleging he overbilled clients more than $800,000.

    Jerry B. Goldman was taken into custody at his home on federal mail-fraud charges after an FBI investigation led to the grand jury indictment. Along with Hanks, Goldman's four victims include musician Andy Summers, a member of the band the Police, federal officials said.

    LAPD identifies suspect, victims in Boyle Heights double homicide

    A Boyle Heights man was arrested on suspicion of murder after Los Angeles police said he shot and killed his brother and a family friend during an argument, department officials said Wednesday.

    The shooting was reported around 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 3300 block of Hunter Street, said Officer Lyle Knight. The suspect has been identified by police as 25-year-old Israel Lopez.

    California death penalty repeal, Proposition 34, rejected

    Proposition 34, a bid to repeal California’s death penalty and replace it with life imprisonment, has failed.

    The drive to abolish the death penalty was launched by former San Quentin State Prison warden Jeanne Woodford, who led a coalition that included Don Heller, one of the original architects of the 1978 death penalty initiative. Among those who also crusaded for the measure were the mothers of two murder victims and a warden who oversaw four executions.

    D.A.-elect Jackie Lacey vows to navigate prison realignment

    Los Angeles County Dist. Atty.-elect Jackie Lacey said Wednesday that she hopes to help the office navigate the challenges of realignment, shifting responsibility for some criminals from state prisons to counties, calling it a "huge threat to our public safety."

    Lacey will replace Steve Cooley, who has strongly backed her campaign. Before her election, Lacey served as Cooley's chief deputy.

    Lindsay Lohan's Porsche crash story doesn't add up, police say

    Santa Monica prosecutors are considering charges against Lindsay Lohan after police said they have found evidence that she lied when she claimed she was not behind the wheel of a Porsche that collided with a dump truck earlier this year.If the Santa Monica city prosecutor filed charges it could be deemed a violation of her 2011 parole for  shoplifting and lead to her returning to jail.Santa Monica Sgt. Richard Lewis said an investigation had determined that Lohan was driving the Porsche during the June collision. The finding contradicts statements the actress made after the crash to law enforcement officers. The Los Angeles County district attorney has already determined the matter is not worthy of a felony filing and referred the matter to the Santa Monica prosecutor's office to determine if the false statement amounts to a violation of the law, according to prosecutors.PHOTOS: The trials and tribulations of Lindsay LohanSanta Monica City Atty. Terry White did not return calls for comment. The office is expected to take action this week on the case.

    Lohan received probation for a 2007 conviction for driving under the influence. She was later convicted of shoplifting from a Venice jeweler.

    Domestic dispute suspected in Boyle Heights double slaying

    A family argument may be to blame for a shooting in Boyle Heights that left two people dead and a third in custody, Los Angeles police said Wednesday.

    The shooting occurred about 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 3300 block of Hunter Street, said Officer Lyle Knight.  The suspect and one of the victims were brothers.

    Teen detained in alleged sexual abuse of boy at Burbank day care

    A Burbank teenager was taken into custody after he allegedly sexually abused a 4-year-old boy at his parents' day-care center, police said.

    Detectives began their investigation Monday after the toddler's mother reported the alleged abuse and determined it occurred when the boy was at the Mejia Family Day Care, Burbank police said in a statement. Officers then went to the Pepper Street center and took the 14-year-old son of the day-care operators into custody.

    Man on trial for murder slashes attorney's face in court

    A Central California man on trial for murder faces additional charges after he slashed his attorney in the face in a courtroom attack, officials said.

    As jurors entered the Tulare County courtroom Monday morning, Rafael Mendoza, 29, cut public defender John Shepard in the face with a makeshift weapon, the Fresno Bee reported. A sheriff's bailiff and Tulare police officers detained Mendoza and helped the attorney.
