Inside airlines' Boeing 787 Dreamliners

On Sunday, United Airlines' Boeing 787 Dreamliner made its inaugural commercial flight, flying from Houston to Chicago. The carrier became the first North American airline to fly the 787. The plane, fabricated from composite materials, is Boeing's first all-new one since the 1990s. It uses LED lighting and features shade-less windows that dim with the push of a button. Boeing has delivered the Dreamliner to five other airlines, including All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Air India, Ethiopian Airlines and LAN. Here's a look some of these planes.

Tuesday Travel Ticker: This is Capt. Obama speaking . . .

A wavering El Niño makes this year’s winter outlook less certain than previous years, NOAA forecasters say. The phenomenon has not shown up as expected, making this one of the most challenging winters ever for forecasters. Typically, El Niño means warmer ocean water that can influence the strength and position of the jetstream and storms over the Pacific.  An El Niño watch remains in effect because there’s still a window for it to emerge . . . . Speaking of outlooks, a lighthearted survey of 1,062 people by Cheapflights.com finds that nearly equal numbers would choose President Obama to “fly their plane” as they would to “throw him off.” From a list of 19 past and current candidates, he was selected most often as the choice to pilot the plane as well as to be bumped from the flight. He was also top choice for a seatmate on a long fight . . . . ....

Day of the Dead: A Mexican tradition comes to life

I saw dead people -- lots of them banging drums, dancing to mariachi music and roving the streets of downtown San Pedro. Dia de Los Muertos began Thursday night when Sixth Street came alive with skeletons wearing brightly colored shawls and skirts, and sporting huge painted-on grins. The highlight of the traditional Mexican holiday: more than 20 altars, carefully constructed with candles, dolls, keepsakes, pictures, treats and anything else that reminded their creators of the loved ones who have passed. The holiday continues Friday, so keep a look out for bony ones on the loose. --Mary Forgione

Across America, tourists and armchair adventurers thrill to the idea of haunted hotels. Yet it turns out there are none. Despite all those websites, brochures, midnight tours and grainy, night-vision reality TV shows, we are stuck with no proof that ghosts exist at all. Which is a shame, because this country is full of ghost-worthy hotels, including these eight. In recognition of this fact, here's a gallery of photos from purportedly haunted lodgings I've inspected or slept in in the last few years from California to New York. In all those visits, I had no mysterious ill effects, heard no otherworldly noises, sensed no specters, and found no ectoplasmic traces (a great relief for maids, I'm sure). Really, there is nothing special about these places at all -- except that they all have long histories, many have intriguing architecture and some have great views. Christopher Reynolds

Lufthansa flights to and from Frankfurt were among those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy halts international flights, too

Service to Europe was among the air travel disrupted by Hurricane Sandy, with the full impact still to be seen. Bloomberg reported that Europe’s No. 1 hub, London Heathrow, had 59 cancellations on Monday, including 47 departures and 12 arrivals. The news service said flights involving at least half a dozen U.S. East Coast airports will be affected.

Aeroports de Paris suffered 13 canceled departures and one arrival at the French capital’s Charles de Gaulle hub and lost one flight at Orly, affecting New York, Washington, Boston and Philadelphia services. Paris-based Air France-KLM Group, Europe’s biggest airline, said  customers would be offered alternative flights at no additional cost.

The Associated Press reported that Frankfurt airport canceled 12 flights, with German carrier Lufthansa scrapping three to the Northeast and one out of Newark. British Airways had to cancel all its flights – a total of 20 --  to and from New York, Newark, Baltimore, Washington, D.C....

Frankenstorm: New DOT rules can help post-Sandy airline travelers

As Hurricane Sandy begins to bear down on the East Coast,  stranded air travelers--9,500 flights have been canceled--are scrambling for tickets home. But when?

“I think that barring any  major damage at airports the next day and a half, you should see everything get back to normal this weekend,” said Rick Seaney, co-founder and chief executive of FareCompare.com.

Seaney is optimistic that the Frankenmess won’t be as tangled as it might have been at another time of year. “It’s a slow time…of the year for travel,” Seaney said. “A. There are not as many people in the air; B. Airlines proactively canceled a lot of flights...and people just didn’t go because of cancellations; and C. the airlines had enough notice to move aircraft to prepare.”

Make no mistake, though: Getting a ticket as the airlines try to “unwind” (Seaney’s apt term) the results of the storm may require a bit of doing. Certainly it helps if you...

The "tsunami motorcyle" went on display Wednesday at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. It was swept into the Pacific Ocean during the 2011 tsunami that struck Japan.

A Harley's tsunami journey from Japan to Canada now a memorial

The battered and rusted motorcycle that now stands at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee traveled more than 4,000 miles in the Pacific Ocean after it was swept away during the deadly earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011.

The 2004 FXSTB Softail Night Train, which washed up more than a year later on an island beach off British Columbia, Canada, carries a deeper, more poignant message about the loss of 20,000 people who died or remain missing.

"This motorcycle has an amazing story to tell, and we are honored to be able to share it," Bill Davidson, vice president of the company, says in a statement from the museum.

When the bike washed ashore, it was still inside a storage container and had an intact license plate. The plate was traced to owner Ikuo Yokoyama, who still lives in the hard-hit Miyagi Prefecture.

He declined Harley-Davidson's offer to return it and instead asked that it be put on display exactly as it was found to serve as a memorial to those "whose lives were...

McKamey Manor: As one haunted era ends, another begins

Halloween is my favorite time of year. And I love to be scared. Over the years, I've been through my fair share of theme park mazes, independent haunted attractions and backyard spookfests.

I even dress up every Halloween as a chainsaw-wielding maniac in a hockey mask and scare the neighborhood kids at the haunted house on our block.

So I like to think I’ve seen it all — from the mundane to the extreme. But I've never experienced anything like McKamey Manor.

> Photos: Inside the McKamey Manor backyard haunt in San Diego

On Friday night I went through the backyard haunt tucked behind the three-bedroom, brick-and-stucco home of Russ and Carol McKamey in an otherwise ordinary San Diego subdivision near Poway. And I can safely say I'll never forget the experience. McKamey Manor is unlike any other haunted house I've ever seen — amateur or professional.

Featured twice on the Travel Channel as well as in countless stories by haunted attraction publications over the past...

American has shut down operations at eight airports; more than 7,000 flights from all airlines have been canceled as a result of the expected superstorm menacing the East Coast.

Frankenstorm creating a Frankenmess for airline travelers

Hurricane Sandy, Frankenstorm—whatever you want to call it, travelers can call it a mess.

[Updated]

FlightStats.com reported Monday that more than 10,000 flights had been canceled.

[Updated]

Most of the East Coast is hunkered down, and that includes the airlines. Joe Brancatelli, who writes the “Joe Sent Me” travel newsletter and keeps a close eye on all things that have to do with flying, said in an email Sunday night that American Airlines had shut down operations at eight airports in the East: the Washington area airports (Baltimore, Dulles and Reagan National) and New York (JFK, LaGuardia and Newwark, N.J.); Philadelphia; and Norfolk, Va.

Airlines have posted information on waivers—that is, they will waive the usual change fee if you want to change your travel plans. There are restrictions: Airlines set dates so that you can’t, say, book a ticket after a certain date and then change it. (The same is true of travel  insurance: You can’t buy insurance...

On the Spot: What's conspiring against this vacation?

Question: Ever feel like Pharaoh in "The Ten Commandments"? Just before I go on vacation, bad things seem to happen: burglary Thursday, date cancels Saturday, email goes out Monday. Why?

Jack Schwartz

Los Angeles

Answer: And now the grand finale: When Schwartz returned home from his vacation (which he enjoyed), he found 400 dead ants in his freezer. They might have been in search of water or just a cooler place to be. Or they might have been part of an insidious plot to torment Schwartz and others like him who can't go anywhere without an aperitif of awfulness.

Assuming that life is one giant conspiracy against your happiness can bring you some comfort from what seems to be constant victimization.

But, professionals suggest, you might be better off pointing your finger at your brain.

"Our brains are masterful meaning makers," said John Zavodny, a philosopher and director of the Center for Environmental Arts and Humanities at Unity College in Maine. "This is what we do. This is how we have...
