Imogen Poots Joins 'Need For Speed,' Writer/Producer John Gatins Says He's A "Car Freak"

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As any reader of the site knows, we're big fans of Imogen Poots, and we'll just go ahead and say that she's the secret weapon of both the upcoming "A Late Quartet" and "Greetings From Tim Buckley," which premiered at Tiff last month. Her star is on the rise, as she's been seen rubbing elbows with Terrence Malick in "Knight Of Cups." And now she's landed her first bona fide blockbuster movie. The actress had joined "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul in "Need For Speed," and she won't be just hanging off someone's arm. The actress will play an exotic car dealer for the wealthy, in a movie that will apparently nod to '70s car culture. "Act of Valor" co-helmer Scott Waugh will direct, with a script from George Gatins, which is based on a story he conceived with his brother John Gatins ("Flight," "Real Steel"), and lest you »

Benedict Cumberbatch To Play Beatles Manager Brian Epstein In Tom Hanks-Produced Biopic

7 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

There might be unlikelier potential megastars around than Benedict Cumberbatch, but we're not sure we can think of any. The 36-year-old British actor had been slogging away in film and TV roles for a decade, mostly in a series of stuffed-shirt roles. He impressed those who took notice (particularly with stage roles, and with his portrayal of Stephen Hawking for the BBC), but wasn't really considered a leading man. But in 2010, the actor was cast as the titular hero in "Sherlock," a new reinvention of Arthur Conan Doyle's detective hero, and the show was a surprise monster hit. Ever since, Cumberbatch has started going supernova; amassing a fervent group of fans nicknamed 'the Cumberbitches,' he's impressed in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Parade's End," and he'll be nearly inescapable in 2013: playing the villain in "Star Trek Into Darkness," being desolated as the titular dragon in "The Hobbit; The. »

John Cusack To Star In Stephen King's 'Cell' & Financial World Drama 'Due Process'

10 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We recently put John Cusack on our list of actors who should fire their agent, but in his case, his career stall has been hampered simply by an inability to pick good projects. Maybe he got our memo or had a wake up call, because the actor is headed into two films that are certainly the most promising projects he's had in a while. Firstly, Cusack will hope to find another box office hit with another Stephen King horror movie, as ScreenDaily reports the "1408" star is set to lead "Cell." As fans of King know, many moons ago, Eli Roth was going to direct the film, but following the hostile reception to "Hostel 2," he bailed on it. But now it has new life with King himself co-writing the screenplay with Adam Alleca ("Last House On The Left"), in a story where cellphone signals wipe the brains of humans, turning people into aggressive killers. »

Drafthouse Picks Up Harrowing Genocide Reenactment Doc 'The Act of Killing'

8 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Drafthouse Films has acquired Us rights to Joshua Oppenheimer's breakout Danish doc "The Act of Killing," which played at both Toronto and Telluride. The film, described by Errol Morris as "a non-fiction film unlike anything else," is a series of portraits of Indonesian death squad leaders, challenged to reenact their real-life mass killings in whatever cinematic form they desire. Drafthouse plans a 30-market theatrical release for the film in 2013, as well as a Best Documentary Feature push for the 2014 Oscars. Here's Indiewire's Eric Kohn on the film: "The Act of Killing" has been shepherded along by executive producers Werner Herzog and Errol Morris, an apt pair for this quintessential look at murder as a primal phenomenon. While Oppenheimer achieves an unprecedented closeness with people responsible for death, his mission is not unlike the process behind Herzog's "Death Row" series (where the director interviews »

Why It Doesn't Matter Who Directs The Next Star Wars Movie

10 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When yesterday's big news about Disney acquiring Lucasfilm broke, every kind of possible reaction seemed to hit the internet all at once. What would the new Star Wars film be about? How many new Star Wars Disney World attractions can we count on? What does this mean for Indiana Jones? How long before I can buy my own Burger King commemorative glassware? For the most part these reactions were very specific to Star Wars, and the genuinely game-changing news that one of the largest entertainment corporations in the world now owned one of history's most beloved franchises. But one reaction that started up almost immediately felt very familiar, because it happens pretty much every time a new big geek-friendly film is announced: who should direct it? I can't promise that Star Wars geeks weren't doing the same thing back in the late 70s when George Lucas decided not to direct »

Game Review: 'Doom 3 Bfg Edition'

just now | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

My first exposure to id Software’s classic Doom was December of 1993.  My friend and I were exchanging gifts, and I tore the wrapping off of my present in the moments before French class began to reveal the cardboard box that housed the Doom shareware, its painted façade of a bloodied marine fighting off hordes of demons containing the ominous rattling of a single 3.5” floppy disk.  I practically sprinted off of the bus to install it on the family PC, and was immediately transported to a brutal, violent dimension where I was baptized in blood and bullets as I fought off the ravenous legions of Hell itself.

Fast forward to 2005, and Doom was reinvented once again (not counting the safe sequel Doom II), promising bleeding-edge technology to match with its first-person firefights.  It was proudly displayed on store shelves next to the high-end graphics cards that you needed to install »

Halloween: Father Builds Aliens Power Loader Costume For Himself And His Baby

39 minutes ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

There is a certain percentage of people out there who love dressing their babies/ little kids in overly complicated outfits. Given how often kids vomit, fall down and get into disgusting situations, I.ve never really understood this, except on Halloween. Every successful parent should put their little kid in at least one outlandish costume for cute and hilarious purposes later. Oh by the way, when you were two, you went as Gollum for Halloween. I.ve had this opinion for awhile, but even my craziest fantasies about any future children I might have never approached Jason Smith.s. The father recently decided to build a joint Halloween costume for himself and his daughter that would resemble the Power Loader from Aliens. It apparently took two nights and a day, but all that time was definitely worth it. Check out this madness below. I really hope this girl grows up »

Jennifer Garner Joins Matthew McConaughey In 'The Dallas Buyer's Club'

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With stand out roles in "Magic Mike," "Killer Joe," "Bernie," "The Paperboy" and "Mud," Matthew McConaughey is having arguably the best year of his career in 2012. With Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf Of Wall Street" on deck and a meaty lead role in the intriguing drama "The Dallas Buyer's Club," 2013 should continue Mac's impressive reawakening. Joining him for the ride in the latter project is Jennifer Garner. She replaces Hilary Swank, who dropped out of the picture earlier this year. To be directed by Jean-Marc Vallée ("Café de Flore," "The Young Victoria") "The Dallas Buyer's Club" is based on the true story of a man diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 who was only given months to live. With nothing to lose, he began experimenting with underground, non-fda-approved drugs and wound up living longer than expected. He began getting these drugs into the »

The film will be a remake of the 2005 Spanish-Argentine romantic comedy from director Marcos Carnevale, which was also adapted into a stage play. MacLaine will play a gregarious and lively New Orleans retiree, and Plummer will be the straight-laced widower that moves into her apartment, causing conflict as she won't leave him alone. The film, raising funds at the Afm, plans to shoot in New Orleans and Rome. Producer Ed Saxon says: "I'm pinching myself; as getting the chance to work with Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, and Michael Radford is a producer's dream come true." Christoph Waltz to Play Interpol Agent in The Muppets Sequel; Film Will Take Place in Europe

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s been a while since we’ve had some Muppets news, but it now appears that we’ve learned who may be playing the new film’s villain.  We know that The Muppets director James Bobin has been working on the script for the sequel with Muppets co-writer Nicholas Stoller, and now Variety’s Marc Graser reports via Twitter that Oscar winner Christoph Waltz is set to play an Interpol agent in the film.  Stoller previously revealed that the film will be a caper, and Graser adds that the story will find the Muppets “running around in Europe." It's a minor bit of news with few details, but Bobin, Stoller, and Jason Segel knocked last year’s redo out of the park so I’m eager to see where they take the characters in the sequel.  Segel won’t have a hand in the script this time around, but »

Set in 1964, the FX drama series American Horror Story: Asylum takes viewers into Briarcliff, a haven for the criminally insane, ruled with an iron fist by Sister Jude (Jessica Lange), a nun with a troubled past.  Inside this locked down facility, danger lurks around every corner, whether it’s a doctor who loves to torture, flesh eating creatures in the forest, alien experimentation or the serial killer Bloody Face, and no one is safe. During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Chloe Sevigny, who plays the resident nymphomaniac, talked about how exciting it is to be a part of event television, what a big fan she was of Season 1, what attracted her to the role, how she’s more frightened by realistic violence than straight out gore, how amazing it was to work with Jessica Lange, just how much crazier things will get this season, and how she »

Hugo Weaving And Rose Byrne Join Australian Omnibus Film The Turning

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It would seem that Australia seems to be really into the idea of bringing talented filmmakers together to make omnibuses. Vatican paper's Bond review doesn't stir

Catholic church mouthpiece devotes five articles to 007 film Skyfall, praising 'beautiful Bond girls' and 'essential vodka martinis'

He is known for the violent retribution he administers to his enemies, thinking nothing of shooting, stabbing or electrocuting them as he hands out justice on behalf of Queen and country, before uttering a dry quip over their corpses. So you might imagine that James Bond's approach to forgiveness does not have much in common with the Catholic Church.

But the Vatican's daily newspaper has overlooked such niceties and given delirious coverage to Skyfall, the latest Bond film, claiming it shows a new, introspective side of the British agent while thankfully cramming in the usual dose of exotic locations and "extremely beautiful Bond girls".

L'Osservatore Romano has tried recently to move with the times, praising cult films such as the Blues Brothers, lauding Bob Dylan and publishing a women's supplement, ever since the editor, »

Star Wars 7: return of the Jedi – again

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Those of us who grew up with the original three films never recovered from the turgid horror that was 1999's The Phantom Menace. Will the new sequels rescue Luke Skywalker and co?

Episode Seven! It has been a rumour ever since the houselights came up on the most recent Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith, in 2005. In fact, Star Wars creator George Lucas had been talking about it way back in the late 1970s; he had hinted at a prequel trilogy which finally came to pass in 1999 with The Phantom Menace and also a sequel trilogy, taking the story onward from where it appeared to finish with Return of the Jedi in 1983. So we're going to get Episode Eight, Nine … and maybe more. Episode Seven is the jewel in the acquisition crown: Disney has bought George Lucas's production behemoth LucasFilm for $4.02bn (£2.5bn): George Lucas gets a »
