    White supremacists and gangs are among the reasons for the increase, which contrasts with a statewide decline. Blacks are the most frequent target.

    After three years of steady decline, hate crimes in Los Angeles County rose 15% last year, due in part to an increase in white supremacist and street gang incidents, officials will report Wednesday.

    No charges against Downey officer who shot unarmed man, D.A. says

    Michael Nida, a 31-year-old father of four, was getting gasoline with his wife on his way to dinner when he ran across Imperial Highway to get cigarettes in October 2011.

    He was detained by police as he came out of the tobacco shop after he was mistaken for a suspect in an armed robbery at a nearby Bank of America ATM. Initially he cooperated but then, "suddenly and inexplicably" ran from officers, prosecutors said. Officers reported he hopped fences and eluded them.

    Singer Bobby Brown arrested for DUI in Valley -- again

    Singer Bobby Brown, ex-husband of the late Whitney Houston, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Tarzana early Wednesday morning, his second such arrest in the San Fernando Valley in about six months.

    Los Angeles Police Department Officer Venus Hall said officers pulled Brown over near the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Corbin Avenue about 1 a.m. and "when they approached him, they smelled the alcohol."

    Home robbery may have led to 85-year-old woman's death

    An investigation into the death of an East Los Angeles womanwas continuing Wednesday as authorities tried to determine whether she was killed during a robbery at her home.

    Victoria Oleta, 85, was discovered dead in her bedroom Mondayby neighbors who checked on her after seeing an open door to her home, where she lived alone. Authorities did not give a street name or block.

    Judge rejects former Bell police chief's bid to double pension

    Randy Adams was seeking a pension of $510,000 a year. The judge says the Bell City Council never approved his $457,000 annual salary.

    A judge has rejected an effort by Bell's former police chief to more than double his pension to $510,000 a year, saying that the City Council never approved his extravagant contract and that city officials tried to keep his salary secret.

    Friends mourn surfer killed in shark attack off Santa Barbara

    Friends on Tuesday mourned a 39-year-old surfer killed in a shark attack off the waters of Central California.

    Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. of Orcutt, Calif., was described as an avid surfer who had been coming to the surf spot since he was a boy.

    Community leaders and family members recount stories of a devoted father who gave back to his community. Three other family members were wounded in the attack by a masked gunman.

    Grieving family members gathered outside the 1950s Chips diner in Hawthorne to remember Filimon Lamas, 33, and his 4-year-old son, who were killed in a weekend rampage in which five members of the Inglewood family were shot by a masked gunman believed to be wearing body armor.

    O.C. massage therapist gets 1 year in sex assaults

    An Orange County massage therapist was sentenced Tuesday to jail time and probation after he pleaded guilty last week to sexually assaulting three of his clients, prosecutors said.

    Jason Michael Elliott, 29, was sentenced to one year in jail, three years of probation and will have to register as a lifetime sex offender, according to a statement from the Orange County district attorney's office.

    Man questioned in Long Beach Molotov cocktail attack, source says

    A man who may be a person of interest in a Long Beach Molotov cocktail attack that left a man critically burned last week was being questioned by authorities Tuesday night, a law enforcement official told The Times.

    The official stressed that authorities were not sure whether the man was in fact involved with the attack Friday night.  Nonetheless, the official said, authorities were attempting to pursue all leads. The man was apprehended Tuesday night.

    Man killed in shark attack was 'really good surfer,' friend says

    A 39-year-old man who was killed Tuesday in a shark attack was described by friends as an avid surfer who had been coming to the waters off the Santa Barbara coast for years.

    Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. of Orcutt was dragged by a friend to the beach after he sustained a massive bite on his upper torso that turned the water surrounding him red, Santa Barbara County sheriff’s officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Man arrested in death of woman found in suitcase

    A Riverside County man charged in the murder of a woman found in a suitcase was arrested in Mexico, authorities said Tuesday night.

    The body of Christine Stewart, 47, was found stuffed inside the 3-foot-long suitcase in a San Diego County motel room in August, authorities said.

    Ex-convict to be tried in O.C. shotgun murder case

    A 27-year-old ex-convict charged with murdering his friend with a shotgun at point-blank range is scheduled to be tried Wednesday in Orange County Superior Court.

    Peter Albert Baltazar is accused of killing James Arrecis on March 2 2009, as he exited his van in Brea. Arrecis had given Baltazar a ride, according to the Orange County district attorney's office.

    Downey officer cleared in fatal shooting of unarmed man

    A Downey police officer who shot and killed a man using a tactical submachine gun in a case of mistaken identity acted lawfully and won't face criminal charges, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

    Officer Steven Gilley fatally shot Michael Nida, 31, of South Gate in the back on Oct. 22, 2011, after he was mistaken for a suspect wanted for an armed robbery at a Bank of America ATM near Imperial Highway and Paramount Boulevard.
