sib of the trib turns 10

Unless you're royalty, Will Smith's offspring, or maybe this kid, chances are you didn't reach sensation status until long after marking double digits. So it's no small accomplishment that a spunky, free, much-nay-sayed commuter tabloid in Chicago not only reached the tweenage milestone, but has done so while thriving in the spotlight. Grab a fork, the celebs brought cake and video salutes to the party at RedEyeChicago.com/10.

cablevision subscribers:

On August 17th, while in the middle of negotiations with Tribune and without warning, Cablevision unilaterally removed four Tribune stations in four markets from its cable systems: WPIX-TV (New York), WPHL-TV (Philadelphia), WCCT-TV (Hartford) and KWGN-TV (Denver). Cablevision took this action despite our unconditional offer to extend the current retransmission agreement with no change in its terms while negotiations continued. To be clear, Cablevision pulled these stations off the air in the middle of the night without notice and while our current agreement was still in place. The following week, Cablevision subscribers in Hartford, Connecticut lost access to WTIC-TV, WGN America and Antenna TV. Tribune makes a substantial annual investment in local news, live sports and high-quality entertainment programming. Cablevision has never compensated us for the retransmission of our local stations, notwithstanding the fact they have been charging their subscribers for our programming for years. What we have proposed amounts to less than a penny a day per subscriber. For more information:

arsenio gets busy with trib tv

Wake the dog pound. It's time to get busy... again. The latest winner of Celebrity Apprentice follows that success by going one bigger. Rolling out in the Fall of 2013, Arsenio Hall returns to late-night TV with his own talk show set to fill the 11p slot on 17 Trib stations, thanks to a partnership deal between Tribune and CBS Television Distribution. Given the speed at which the announcement trended on Twitter, it's a safe bet fans will be happily hmmming 'til its debut.

it's a pulitzer party

That roar of applause bursting from the 435 newsroom? When the Pulitzer winners list dropped, Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich sat atop the Commentary category, "...for her wide range of down-to-earth columns that reflect the character and capture the culture of her famed city." In addition to the win, a half dozen also- familiar names made the finalists' cut: from Chicago, Gary Marx and David Jackson (Investigative Reporting), and from Los Angeles, Steve Lopez (Commentary), Carolyn Cole and Brian van der Brug (Breaking News Photography), and Francine Orr (Feature Photography). Congratulations all.
