Athens, Greece — A demonstrator clashes with riot police during a 24-hour strike in Athens. Greek riot police fired tear gas to disperse protesters at an anti-austerity rally held during a national general strike as EU leaders were to tackle the eurozone crisis at a summit. The protesters had broken through a police line outside luxury hotels on central Syntagma Square and scattered groups of youths later attacked police with stones and firebombs, an AFP reporter said.

Thousands of South African gold miners say they will continue striking despite a plea by the president that they return to work. This week, thousands of Cambodians  mourned the death of former King Norodom Sihanouk at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. Sihanouk died Monday at age 89 of a heart attack in Beijing.

More than 70 bodies were discovered Friday night in the eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor in what opposition activists say was a massacre committed by government forces three weeks ago. More Photos

In Peshawar, a Pakistani police officer inspects a burned-out police check post following an attack by armed militants overnight that sparked a gun battle in which six police officers were killed. And in India, government employees in the state of Jammu and Kashmir are detained by police during a protest against the government and unpaid salaries in Srinagar, the summer capital; and Filipino Muslims celebrate after hearing news of the signing of a preliminary peace pact between the government and the nation’s largest Muslim rebel group during a rally outside the gates of the Malacanang presidential palace in Manila.

On the sports front, fans set fire to stands in Dakar during Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations qualifier against Senegal. Senegal was disqualified from the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations after the problems with crowd control forced its qualifier with Ivory Coast to be abandoned.

On the European continent, a larger-than-life eye stares back at visitors to the Heinz Nixdorf Museumsforum in Germany; the grape harvest is underway in  the Grand Cru Rangen in eastern France; a paraglider prepares for a jump on the Hochries mountain in Germany; circus workers protest in front of the Italian Parliament as it debates the treatment of circus animals; and students in Barcelona, Spain, protest government cuts in education.
