Chauncey Billups was voted by general managers as the player who would make the best head coach someday, but he sees himself more as the GM type himself.

Chauncey Billups doesn't have much interest in becoming a coach

Chauncey Billups was voted by the NBA general managers as the active player who would make the best head coach someday.

One little problem.

Billups isn't quite interested.

"It's an honor to have all the GMs think of me like that," Billups told The Times. "The irony in it is that I really never had a real desire to be a head coach in the NBA. Not to say that I won't, but I never really had that desire."

That's too bad for prospective players.

After suffering a season-ending Achilles' tendon injury in February, Billups had a big influence on the team from the bench. The Clippers went on a five-game winning streak at home during his first handful of games on the pine.

"I told Chaunce he gotta stop being selfish again and come on the road with us too," Chris Paul joked last season. "It's no secret, we are undefeated when he's there."

Billups may not want to be a coach, but he wants to remain with the NBA.

"I always see myself more behind the scenes, putting the team together, GM, president type of...

UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad injures right shoulder

UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad hurt his right shoulder during practice Wednesday and is awaiting results of an MRI exam to determine the extent of the injury.

The 6-foot-6 swingman out of Las Vegas is considered one of the top two freshmen in the nation and is part of a blue-chip recruiting class that has created buzz in college basketball.

Muhammad, who has not been cleared to play while the NCAA investigates his eligibility, had an MRI exam on Wednesday and should know the test results on Thursday.

Kyle Anderson, Tony Parker and Jordan Adams are the other three members of the Bruins' freshman class. Anderson is also awaiting word about his eligibility.

Coach Robin Fraser watches Chivas USA take on the Whitecaps in Vancouver.

Reports have Robin Fraser out as Chivas USA coach

Less than 24 hours after Chivas USA began its long-awaited front-office shuffle, Internet reports began speculating on the future of second-year Coach Robin Fraser. ESPN Deportes' John Sutcliffe reported the decision has already been made to let Fraser go and the website SB Nation said Wednesday that "all signs seem to be pointing" to Fraser's ouster following Sunday's regular-season finale in Dallas.

According to Sutcliffe, former Chivas de Guadalajara Coach Efrain Flores will replace Fraser.

After a spirited training session Wednesday at the Home Depot Center, Fraser didn't sound optimistic about his future with the Major League Soccer team.

"I have no idea," said Fraser, the team's sixth coach in eight seasons. "It’s certainly not up to me. As long as I'm here, I'm trying to make the team as good as possible and win as many games as possible.

"Now we’re down to one game. Beyond that I don’t know."

Chivas, which will finish last in the Western Conference this season, is...

Bud Selig says the Athletics' stadium situation "is a very complicated issue."

Bud Selig on A's stadium situation: 'I would like to move faster'

SAN FRANCISCO -- As the San Francisco Giants play in the World Series for the second time in three years, their owners continue to object to the Oakland Athletics' plan to move to San Jose. Commissioner Bud Selig is in town, so he will face the question of why he has not approved or rejected the A's plan in the 43 months since he took the matter under advisement.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Selig discussed a variety of issues, from instant replay and the new playoff format to off-field matters involving the Dodgers and Angels. We got quite a few emails and tweets asking what Selig had said about the battle for San Jose.

"It’s a very complicated situation," Selig said. "While everyone knows I take my time, it has stood me in good stead on a myriad of other issues. This is a very complicated issue. ...

"Of course I would like to move faster. But I’m not going to move until I’m really satisfied on all issues and both clubs are satisfied on all issues."...

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning celebrates after his 77-yard touchdown pass to Victor Cruz late in the game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Eli Manning won't exchange gift from DeAngelo Hall, Redskins

Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall says the New York Giants didn't really earn their 27-23 victory Sunday.

Instead, Hall told reporters on Wednesday, the Redskins gave it to their NFC East rivals by blowing the coverage on what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown pass by quarterback Eli Manning with just more than a minute remaining in the game.

"He made the play to beat us, but I don't feel like he made that play. I feel we gave him that play," Hall said of Manning's 77-yard strike to Victor Cruz. "We just had one guy set his feet and one guy not do this. I could have thrown that ball and he would have scored.

"It wasn't something where he was a rocket scientist and he figured something out. We just played that as bad as possible."

Manning is a two-time Super Bowl champion and MVP. He leads the league in passing yards and his 5-2 team has a 1 1/2-game lead in the division.

He took Hall's comments in stride.

"I appreciate him giving it to me. Thank you," Manning said. "I...

Ozzie Guillen talks with reporters in the dugout before a game against the Cincinnati Reds in Miami.

Which team would be the perfect next fit for Ozzie Guillen?

Writers from around Tribune Co. discuss Ozzie Guillen, who was fired as the Miami Marlins' manager. Check back throughout the day for their responses and join the conversation with a comment of your own.

Dylan Hernandez, Los Angeles Times

The Cuban national team?

In all seriousness, I don't even know how to answer this question. Only three teams are looking for a manager, and one of them is the team that fired Guillen.

It's impossible to correctly guess which managers will be fired in the next two to five years, which, no doubt, is a necessary element to create a "perfect next fit" for Guillen.

It's also hard to correctly guess what teams' rosters will look like; you can't tell if a team will be a "perfect next fit" for a manager unless you know which players will be on which team.

I suppose what this question is really asking is, "What market would be most tolerant of Guillen's antics?" Well, I think it has nothing to do with the market and everything to do with winning and losing. If...

Will Dwight Howard get along with Kobe Bryant?

Times Lakers writer Mike Bresnahan and Orlando Sentinel writer Brian Schmitz took part in a Google+ Hangout on Wednesday to discuss what impact Dwight Howard will have on the Lakers.

One big question is how will Howard and Kobe Bryant will get along.

Bresnahan pointed out that Howard "Has kind of emulated Kobe over the years. This is a guy so happy to be out of Orlando that he is deferring to Kobe and there shouldn't be any problems unless Kobe tries to embarass him in practice, and there is no reason for him to that.

Schmitz, who covered Howard in Orlando says that Howard is disingenuous when he talks about the Lakers. "He says it was destiny that he be on the Lakers. No, he ran out of locations. Where else was he gonna go? He has been an Alpha Dog for the last 8 years, so what will happen those nights when Kobe gets his points, Pau Gasol gets his, Steve Nash gets his. What does he do then? It will be interesting to see how Dwight responds to his new role."

Bresnahan, though says "He's...

Jeff Blatnick, left, wrestles with Thomas Johansson of Sweden in the gold-medal match at the 1984 Olympics.

Olympic wrestling champion Jeff Blatnick dead at 55

Olympic wrestling gold medalist and longtime MMA advocate Jeff Blatnick has died after complications from heart surgery.

Blatnick took home the gold in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1984 and was also a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, which remained home after President Carter announced a boycott of the Summer Olympics in Moscow because of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

Blatnick was a commentator in the early days of UFC before being replaced after UFC 32 in June 2001.

Blatnick, who helped develop some of the rules of MMA still used today, became a licensed judge with the New Jersey State Athletic Commission.

At the time of his death, Blatnick was a varsity wrestling coach at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High in Glen Falls, N.Y.

You can read more about Blatnick and his instrumental role in the development of UFC's roles in this piece written by Todd Martin.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, left, appointed his predecessor Paul Tagliabue to hear the appeals in the New Orleans Saints bounty case.

NFLPA fights to keep Paul Tagliabue from hearing bounty appeals

The NFL Players Assn. said it will file a motion Wednesday in U.S. District Court in New Orleans asking that Paul Tagliabue recuse himself from hearing the appeals of the four players suspended in the Saints bounty scandal.

In a statement, the NFLPA said Tagliabue's involvement is a conflict of interest because the former NFL commissioner works for a law firm that has handled bounty-related matters for the league, and represented current Commissioner Roger Goodell in a defamation lawsuit by one of the four players, Jonathan Vilma.

Goodell removed himself from hearing the appeals and appointed Tagliabue, who was league commissioner from 1989 through 2006, to the job last week.

The hearings are scheduled for Tuesday.

The suspensions were first handed down in May and took effect in July after one round of appeals were rejected by Goodell. But after training camp a three-member appeals panel instructed Goodell to start the disciplinary process again to clarify his reasons for issuing the...

Barclays Center in Brooklyn is the future home of the New York Islanders.

A tree grows in Brooklyn ... and a hockey team moves there

The NHL’s New York Islanders, unable to work out a deal to renovate or replace the Nassau Coliseum, announced Wednesday they will join the NBA’s Nets in moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Islanders announced a 25-year agreement to play in the new arena, which will seat only about 14,500 people for hockey.

The move will take effect for the 2015-16 season. Cue the jokes about whether the NHL, which locked players out on Sept. 15 and on Tuesday declined an invitation from the players’ union to restart negotiations, will have resumed play by the time the Islanders’ move becomes official.

Brooklyn has had hockey before: The now-defunct New York Americans called themselves the Brooklyn Americans for a season, even though they only practiced there and played their home games at Madison Square Garden.

As a Brooklyn native who grew up hearing stories about the Dodgers’ desertion, I’m happy for the reverse migration back to Brooklyn by the Nets and,...

Game On Dude is back in the Breeders' Cup Classic

Game On Dude is back to take another shot at winning the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, a race he led most of the way last year before getting beat in the closing yards.

He is one of a total of 180 horses, including eight defending or former champions, which were pre-entered Wednesday for the $25 million, 15-race Breeders' Cup world championships at Santa Anita on Nov. 2-3. That's down from last year's record total of 193.

The Classic will be shown live and in prime time on Nov. 3 for the first time on NBC.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Game On Dude was pre-entered in the 1 1/4 -mile Classic to be run on his home track, where he is undefeated in five starts. A full field of 14 horses was pre-entered, including four trained by Bill Mott, whose 14-1 shot Drosselmeyer won last year's Classic by 1 1/2  lengths.

Game On Dude will attempt to give Baffert his first win in the Classic with new rider Rafael Bejarano, who replaced Chantal Sutherland. She retired last week, and had lost the mount...
