They may be trying to be creative but their kids will -- consciously or not -- resent them for it when they have to go around telling everyone they meet that the intuitive spelling is wrong and that it's actually something else. Particularly when people use the letter Y where you'd expect an I. There's just no way to guess that from hearing the name. Poor kids. [ Reply | More ]

There isn't a trend of "white trash" (as defined by UB) names amongst those teams. maybe we just see things differently. I grew up in flyover country and there was a distinct economic difference when it came to activities that you might ascribe to middle america. For example, interest in WWF, NASCAR and playing football v kids playing soccer, having swimming lessons and going skiing, etc. Sure, there are some people who are well off who enjoy WWF and NASCAR but that is not the "base" and that is the "type" that I associate with middle america [ Reply | More ]

There's more to middle America than NASCAR and WWF. The Olympics is what I would call a "crossover" event, in the sense that everyone enjoys it, and it's broadcast by a major television network, but the events that are broadcast are those that appeal most to middle America. Middle America just means "mass" or "popular" culture. It doesn't mean trashy, except amongst those who feel the need to distance themselves from it. [ Reply | More ]

I don't remember exactly. Their father works in finance, I think he had his own financial firm. It was an old Vanity Fair interview from two years ago. Their issue with Zuckerberg is that they look the part of old money WASPs, yet they are really *only* nouveau riche and Zuckerberg ("the Jew") has the pedigree (high achieving/educated family, the 'right' schools going back a few generations and the social standing within their community) of an old money WASP. This came up because they created some fake Zuckerberg profile on the early prototype of Facebook and Zuckerberg created one for them. The profiles were meant as a parody of each other, but the underlying resentments were quite clear. These fake profiles later came up during the trial. [ Reply | More ]

Not really. The competitive figure skating and gymnastics world (and other sports) is made of a range of incomes, including wealthy professionals who spend their weekends traveling to competitions. While all the broad, class-base generalizatons are extremely interesting, I think people are overlooking the fact that the gynmasts are about a decade younger than the average age of the US team (27). These are common names for American girls of their generation. [ Reply | More ]

You must be thrilled that Jordyn was eliminated from the all-around, right? So relieved that UMC-named Alexandra and Gabrielle will be representing the US. [ Reply | More ]

It's kind of a cheesy sport just due to the extra crap. Look at the outfits, the cutesy ponytails, all the stupid stuff they are asked to do, loaded on top of athletics. Just like skaters. It's toddlers 'n tiaras when it should just be about athleticism. That said, they are totally incredible athletic women and deserve enormous respect for that. So sad that they have to glitz out like vegas and act like little girls in order to do well. Men's gymnastics is a lot more dignified. [ Reply | More ]

The stupid bouncy walk even when not on the floor, the perkiness, the flirtiness, the arms in the air - TA DAAAAA! Just look at the killer, really killer faces on the great female gymnasts, fully of stony resolve - more than volleyball or whatever - and then see them flash that little smile and flip their ponytails on cue. It's something that makes me not want my daughter to do it. Why should any serious athletes have to do that? Couldn't they just flip and jump and vault? Like the men do? And if not, why not? OK, rant over. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. I find the cutesy floor routine (the dancing and posing, not the tumbling) and the perkiness to be trivializing. I love watching gymnastics, but I wish they didn't "feminize" it the way the do. [ Reply | More ]

for the most part these days, olympic gymnasts are NOT women, they are girls. teenage girls. not as young as they were for a while in the 70s-90s, but girls all the same. the older gymnasts, do not to nearly the "cutesy" stuff that the younger ones do. but aren't ponytails the usual athletic hairstyle for a girl who doesn't have super short hair? they need it off their faces (this the 10,000 hair clips) and to stay in place.
