Tinaroo artist's sculpture to mark historic town Augathella's entrance
WORK by Tinaroo artist Amanda Feher has been commissioned to mark the entrance to the tiny but historic town of Augathella in central south Queensland.
Augathella was the home of the formidable junior football team, the “Mighty Meat Ants”.
Murweh Shire Council commissioned a 4.5m steel and copper meat ant which is part of a piece that stands 7.6m high to mark the team’s feats and to boost tourism.
Ms Feher said because of their blue pants and maroon shorts, the team was described as looking like a “bunch of meat ants running around” and the nickname stuck.
Now the town’s 500 residents, about 90km from Charleville, are hoping to capitalise on the team’s former glory.
They have placed the sculpture on the main road half a kilometre from the town. “The idea is to attract people into the town off the highway,” Ms Feher said.
Ms Feher is working on a piece for the Changing Lanes exhibition in Cairns which starts in May and runs for six months.
She is making a large-scale charm bracelet with an interactive sound component, the individual charms highlighting scenes from Cairns’ past.
The charm bracelet reflects Ms Feher’s connection with the central city through her grandparents who ran the jewellers shop, Crofton Clauson.
