Does the Duchess of Cambridge have a green thumb?
Kate tried her hand at growing vegetables during a gardening project in Newcastle Wednesday, and by all accounts, she knew what she was doing.
Community gardener Emma Hughes, who hosted Kate at Elswick Park, told PEOPLE that at home, the royal "grows her own potatoes in sacks. We were digging the potatoes and she was asking about it. She said ours were bigger. She said she only got small ones this year."
Kate met children, who are taught about how food is made and where it comes from, via the Edible Elswick project, and she spoke to gardeners who have planted everything from beets to wheat.

Normally known for her trademark suede boots or nude heels, the Duchess of Cambridge made a joke out of donning sneakers as she and William opened a new training facility for the England national soccer team on Tuesday.
Local Member of Parliament Andrew Griffiths met the couple at St. George's Park, Burton-upon-Trent, and said, "I asked if she was going to come for a kickabout later. She said, 'Have you got a pair of trainers I can borrow?' I said, 'It can be arranged.' She just laughed."
Sporting an autumnal gray coat by Reiss, Kate, 30, arrived at the $160-million complex by helicopter from London – and learning chopper lingo with her RAF pilot husband.
"She has been picking up on the helicopter chat. William was talking to the pilot, and she is now into the helicopter chat," Griffiths told reporters.

Here comes the bride... and royal dad!
The Duchess of Cambridge made her first public appearance since returning from her Asia tour when her father Michael Middleton walked a close friend down the aisle at a wedding on Saturday.
Family friend Thierry Kelaart chose Michael to give her away at her country wedding on Saturday because her own father died nearly two decades ago.
The last time he'd carried out such a role was April 2011 when Kate wed Prince William on a spectacular day watched by millions.
Kate's Southeast Asia Style Earns High Marks

The Duchess of Cambridge made all the right fashion moves during her recent tour of Southeast Asia – at least according to the experts.
British fashion commentator Hilary Alexander tells PEOPLE she was "delighted" at Kate's dress choices.
"What intrigued me ... was the way she has taken a tip from the Queen and been careful to incorporate national symbols [into her clothes]," Alexander says. "At the dinner in Malaysia, for example, she had the hibiscus [the national flower] embroidered on the Alexander McQueen dress (far left)."
Not only was her symbolism spot-on, but the cuts of her dresses were appropriate, too. "The style has had a slight hint toward the national dress, such as the V-neck Jenny Packham (second from left)," Alexander says. "That was similar to the tops that you see women in Singapore wearing."

And they're off!
After an eventful nine-day journey that took them to Singapore, Malaysia and the Solomon Islands, William and Kate were waved off from their final stop, Tuvalu, on Wednesday.
William and Kate (in a summery dress by Erdem) were taken by a carriage carried by about 20 men to their charter plane. They were due to briefly stop in Brisbane, Australia, before boarding a flight to London.
The tour was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding published photos of Kate sunbathing topless in France. But the couple will also remember it for the vast numbers of people who turned out to meet them and welcome to the various countries.
The Queen Is 'Definitely Supporting' Kate in Photo Scandal: Source

The Palace may have reacted with "anger and disbelief" over the publication of topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge – but it's not directed at Kate.
William's father Prince Charles and grandmother Queen Elizabeth II "are most definitely supporting [Will and Kate] in everything that they are doing," a Palace source tells PEOPLE in its new issue, on newsstands Friday.
So far, they have backing of the courts, too. The duo won an injunction in France to stop further publication of the images, which were taken as Kate sunbathed topless at a château in the South of France.

The Duchess of Cambridge has been trying on local fashions during her time in Asia. And she looked smashing Tuesday in the most traditional clothing imaginable – a colorful Polynesian-style grass skirt – on a visit to the island of Tuvalu.
She and her husband, Prince William, said "talofa" ("hello") to the tiny and remote South Pacific nation, where they were given a royal welcome – transported in a leaf-topped shoulder-high carriage by more than 25 men in pandanus leaf skirts.
In the evening, they joined local chiefs for an exuberant celebration of food and dancing, with Kate getting to her feet time after time – William a little less often – to join the performers in swaying her hips and arms in time to the music.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have won their first legal battle in an attempt to block further publication of photos of the Duchess sunbathing topless while on vacation in France.
The photos must not be published again, a French court ruled Tuesday, according to the BBC. And Closer magazine, which was the first to obtain and print them, was ordered to give the originals to the couple within 24 hours.
A St. James’s Palace spokesperson said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcome the judge’s ruling."
Kate and William Take Legal Action over Topless Photos

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's legal team has filed charges against Closer, a French magazine that was the first to publish photographs of the couple outside a secluded villa in Provence, including shots of Kate sunbathing topless.
"We can confirm that a criminal complaint has been made to the French Prosecution Department today," a spokesperson for Clarence House said on Monday.
"The complaint concerns the taking of photographs of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge whilst on holiday and the publication of those photographs in breach of their privacy."
