Enrichment Studies and Activities
Throughout students’ time in the Sixth Form there will be opportunities for them to extend and develop key skills through the enrichment courses and activities which complement Advanced Level lessons.
General Studies
This subject reflects a student’s overall academic ability. A student who succeeds at General Studies has displayed an ability to use a range of skills in a variety of contexts, something that universities and employers are looking for.
Students may be offered a place at university on the basis of the extra points they achieved in their General Studies’ examination.
In Year 12 all students have several studies tutorials.
Lessons in Ethics, Philosophy and Culture, in Year 13 support learning for General Studies.
The best way to prepare for a General Studies examination is to read newspapers (available in the Sixth Form Library) and keep up to date with topical issues. A student with an interest in the wider world will be well prepared for General Studies.
All students will sit three AS level examinations in Year 12 and three A2 level examinations in Year 13. This part of the Sixth Form is compulsory.
AQA BACCALAUREATE
Starting in Year 12, after the AS examinations, and concluding in Year 13, all students are given the opportunity to develop yet more skills by completing the AQA BACC. This qualification is looked upon very favourably by universities and employers. To gain the AQA BACC qualification, a number of pass A2 General Studies, complete a number of hours by working in the community and produce an extended project. In order to complete this final piece of work, all students in Year 13 are offered tutorials to guide them through the process of researching and writing a project.

Modern Foreign Languages
As a language college we are committed to continuing foreign language study post 16 and there are plenty of opportunities for everyone, including on-screen guided learning systems. Extra- curricular school classes have been running this year in Japanese, Spanish and Italian for those who wish to learn a little about the languages and culture and, subject to demand, we hope to be able to offer similar courses next year.
Ethics, Philosophy and Culture
This course will broaden the students’ knowledge and draw on their experiences of cultural and moral issues. They will be faced with thought-provoking philosophical questions and investigate disappearing cultures and clashes between modern-day cultures. The course will be of value to anyone contemplating university and will help them to make their own life decisions.
Work Experience
All students should participate in some extended period of work experience or community service. It is essential for some university courses, especially vocational courses such as physiotherapy, teaching and medicine. It will also help the student to develop a broader range of skills.
