Comic-con 2012

Jamie Foxx has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest directors, won an Oscar and has done the rare feat of also winning a couple of Grammys over the years. Yet, it was his experience on the Quentin Tarantino set of Django Unchained that may sit at the top of his life experience list. Foxx sat down with Movie Fanatic and iamROGUE.com at Comic-Con recently to take us inside the powerful story of a slave seeking justice.

SDCC 2012: Karl Urban Talks 'Dredd'

Friday, 20 July 2012 10:39

Grittier reboots for established comic book heroes are increasingly common.  While the notion probably calls webslingers and caped crusaders to mind immediately, this September, a very different hero is going from the page to the screen all over again.  With Dredd, Judge Joseph Dredd joins the Spider-Men and Batmen with a reboot all his own, an all-out 3D R-rated action movie that honors the character created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra in the pages of 2000 AD more than three decades ago.  In the new film, Dredd is all that stands between Mega-City One and total chaos, as the futuristic metropolis is torn apart by an epidemic of a drug known as Slo-Mo.

To portray the legendarily two-fisted, uncompromising judge, director Pete Travis and producers enlisted Karl Urban to star.  The New Zealand native first captured attention Stateside as Eomer in the second two Lord of the Rings films, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.  His subsequent credits include turns in films such as The Bourne Supremacy, Red, Doom, Priest, and 2009's Star Trek, in which he memorably played Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, an iconic character originally played by DeForest Kelley.

In Dredd, though, Urban has the opportunity to display a heretofore unseen ferocity.  Last week at San Diego Comic-Con, Urban was the polar opposite of the futuristic supercop.  He presented a sneak preview of the film for an enthusiastic audience and participated in a major promotion push for the grim science fiction tale.  Movie Fanatic and iamROGUE.com were present at a roundtable interview with Urban, where the actor was happy to discuss rebooting Dredd, acting from under a mask, and researching through comic books.

Iconic rapper-turned-writer/director RZA (Wu-Tang Clan) made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con International 2012 in San Diego on Thursday to help promote his upcoming feature film directorial debut entitled The Man with the Iron Fists, which is scheduled for release on November 2nd. RZA co-wrote the screenplay with accomplished director Eli Roth (Hostel), and the film features an impressive cast of actors that includes Oscar-winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill: Vol. 1), Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), and wrestler-turned-actor David Bautista

On behalf of iamROGUE.com and Moviefanatic.com, IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick had a chance to catch up with RZA and David Bautista on the red carpet at The Expendables 2 party, which was held at the Hard Rock Hotel on Thursday night, to discuss The Man with the Iron Fists. The two men talked about their new film, RZA's directorial debut, how Bautista thinks he did, what RZA learned about directing from his mentors Jim Jarmusch, John Woo, and Quentin Tarantino, his all-time favorite martial arts films, working with Russell Crowe, and the music for the film, which will feature a new song by Kanye West

Writer/director David Ayer (Harsh Times, Street Kings) appeared in Hall H at Comic-Con International 2012 in San Diego on Saturday, along with actors Jake Gyllenhall and Michel Pena to discuss their new film End of Watch, which is scheduled for release on September 28th.

Director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has the most intriguing of concepts centering his next film. His Elysium stars, Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, landed at Comic-Con and told Movie Fanatic and iamROGUE.com as much about it as they could. You see, the film about a futuristic world where the rich all live on a luxury space station while the poor and middle class fight over the scraps that is otherwise known as modern life on Earth, is surrounded by secrecy.

Sam Raimi has paired quite a pair of actresses in Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams as showcased in the Oz the Great and Powerful trailer. The two stars of the recent Oscar- nominated Black Swan and My Week with Marilyn, respectively, are immediately ready to extol all the praise on their director.
