It's hard to keep an athlete away from the field for too long.

After several days of cheering on Olympians – including fellow equestrian and cousin Zara Phillips – Princes Harry and William saddled up Sunday for a game of polo.

The brothers squared off in the Jerudong Trophy Polo Match, held at the Cirencester Polo Club just outside London, to benefit a trio of charities close to both their hearts.

Olympic TV Coverage: The Winners and Losers

Originally posted 08/06/2012 02:00PM

The XXX Olympiad, also known as NBC's Summer Televisiad, is now halfway to its Aug. 12 conclusion. Apart from the athletes, who and what are the winners and losers?

Winner: director Danny Boyle

I wasn't wild about his attempt to wed British pop whimsy to stadium-sized spectacle in the grand opening night – the only resonant image for me was that giant sleeping baby – but millions certainly loved it, and the ratings were the best ever for the ceremony. If it inspires bigger artistic risks in future Olympics openings, it will have been worth it. The next time a U.S. city plays host, someone please recruit Quentin Tarantino.

Loser: Ryan Seacrest

Viewers are used to the fact that the American Idol host has the determination of a gold medalist to build and burnish his career. So why was his presence in NBC's coverage a faint but distinct irritant? His interviews were exactly what you expect from Seacrest, who like his role model Dick Clark is scrupulously inoffensive. Maybe it's that an interview with Michael Phelps shouldn't feel tonally identical to one with Jennifer Lopez.

Kate Gives U.S. Gymnasts a Thrill

Gymnastics royalty encountered the real thing on Sunday in London, as four of Team USA's female Olympic gymnasts – out of the so-called Fab Five – were starstruck by an unexpected chat with the Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate, 30, attending the beginning of the event finals at Greenwich Arena, is a huge supporter of Great Britain's athletes at these London Games – but was impressed enough by the gold-winning American team to approach and offer her congratulations.

"Just met princess Kate with @jordyn_wieber @kyla_ross96 & @gabrielledoug she is so beautiful & so nice! I told her I loved her style lol :)," Aly Raisman wrote on Twitter.

Earl Spencer Names New Baby for His Late Sister Princess Diana

Originally posted 08/06/2012 10:30AM

Princess Diana's legacy lives on – thanks to her brother, Earl Spencer.

Spencer, 47, and his wife Countess Spencer, 39, have welcomed their first child together, a healthy 8 lb., 14 oz. baby girl whom they have named Lady Charlotte Diana Spencer – after his beloved late sister.

"She's adorable," the proud (seven-time) father told London's Daily Mail.

Although the couple hadn't settled on a name before the birth, Spencer had the newborn's late aunt Diana in mind. "I very much wanted her commemorated in the naming of our daughter," he said.

Prince William 'Absolutely Dreading' Getting Caught on Kiss Cam with Kate

Originally posted 08/04/2012 09:45AM

On his wedding day, Prince William kissed his new wife Kate (twice!) on the balcony at Buckingham Palace as the world watched. But at the Summer Olympic Games in London, where the royal couple have been enthusiastic spectators at various events, William apparently prefers not to steal the spotlight from the Olympians.

"I was absolutely dreading they were going to come and show myself and my wife and that would have been very embarrassing," William says of a kiss cam at the Olympic Velodrome, where the royals watched Scottish cyclist Sir Chris Hoy win gold and set a new world record in the men's team sprint.

From waving to royal watchers – to doing the Wave.

Prince William and Kate, who have become regular fixtures at the 2012 Summer Olympics, were caught up in the spirit of the London Games Thursday as they gave their hands to the stadium tradition.

All smiles, the royal couple, both 30, joined the crowd to raise their arms in the air (which creates a crest-like visual effect).

Which Royal Has the Best Reaction to Olympic Games?

Originally posted 08/02/2012 01:30PM

Prince Harry, Prince William and his wife Kate have been nearly constant spectators at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games as the excitement unfolds in their hometown of London.

The royal trio – often separately – have watched everything from tennis matches, to swimming races, water polo games and equestrian events. (They were all on hand to watch family member, Zara Phillips, become the first British royal to win a silver Olympics medal as part of the Team GB equestrian event on Tuesday.)

Far from being stoic in the face of tight races and athletic prowess, Harry, Kate and William have mirrored the drama in their expressions.

Some of Great Britain's most valuable players scored something just as sought-after as Olympic gold: a visit from Prince William and Kate.

The royal couple greeted their homeland's finest 2012 Summer Olympics competitors at their accommodations in Athletes' Village, including cyclist Victoria Pendleton (pictured), on Tuesday.

A hat-sporting William, who chatted with Pendleton, and Kate had plenty to celebrate with the athletes, after all: Earlier, cousin Zara Phillips became the first British royal to win a silver medal, an honor she earned as part of the five-member Team GB equestrian team.

It wasn't your everyday family outing.

On Monday as the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips competed in the difficult cross-country portion of Olympic equestrian event, her relatives Prince William, Kate, Prince Harry, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Camilla all applauded enthusiastically from the stands, as about 50,000 other spectators – including Phillips's mother, Princess Anne – viewed from along the 3.5-mile, 28-obstacle course.

Five minutes after setting off on her horse High Kingdom, Phillips, wearing No. 40, negotiated the Tower of London fence, eliciting tremendous applause – including from her cousins. Sitting between William and Camilla, Kate, who wore a pale blue Team GB badge on the right lapel of her navy blue jacket, also beamed a huge smile.

And there were more smiles to come.
