Freedom Friday

Hello Everyone!

Things are really progressing for ThatKellieGirl.  And that only means more of that good stuff for you! :-)

In the meantime, I will be in the woods playing paintball with a bunch of friends this weekend.  Ya’ll pray for me because I really don’t like pain.  And everyone keeps telling me as soon as you get shot, it’s going to hurt really bad. :(   So I googled “paint ball”, and a picture pops up of this guy with whelps from being hit by paint balls!  Did I just sign-up the for “Hunger Games” and nobody told me?    Well, I am willing to try (almost) anything once.  Who knows?  I might come back as the paintball champion. *shrugs*  Let’s see what happens folks.

I hope you have an adventurous weekend scheduled also.  If not, check out some adventures below.

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl :-)

For one night only, check out the Reminisce Over You exhibit.  Our generation is heavily influenced by the artistic expressions of the 80’s and early 90’s – what better way to celebrate than by displaying artwork commemorating such a colorful moment of time? Back in the day when sunflower seeds were ten cents and hip hop landed in our childhood neighborhoods, we were ushered into new realms of discovery. These experiences became an active part of our collective memory. View a group of artists channelling these shared memories into a series of new works.

Check out MC and Producer Mazaman dropping some knowledege in his video “If I”.  The track is tight also.  It has the same vibe of DJ Jazzy Jeff‘s “The Magnificent” album, one of my fav albums by the way. :-)  Enjoy!

And for good measure, check out Mazaman’s “Black Is”.  DOPE!

West African-born and DC-raised Tabi Bonney recently dropped a video for “Top Notch Material Girl”.  The single is from his 2011 album “The Summer Years”. Tabi burst on the scene with his song “Put Me in the Pocket“and he’s been running full speed ever since.  Tabi is known for his nonchalant personality with a penchant for pop fashion, beautiful women and all the good things in life.  So you should expect the cocky, braggadocious lyrics and some infectious beats.  Check it out.

Fear of a Black Planet

I’ve been wonderin’ why
People livin’ in fear
Of my shade
(Or my high top fade)
I’m not the one that’s runnin’
But they got me one the run
Treat me like I have a gun
All I got is genes and chromosomes
Consider me Black to the bone
All I want is peace and love
On this planet
(Ain’t that how God planned it?)

-Public Enemy, “Fear of a Black Planet” (1990)

Freedom Friday: The March Madness Edition

Hello Good Folks!

TGIF!

So tonight, my alma mater, Ohio University will be dancing in St. Louis. I am so proud and excited for our team. My home state of Ohio has been showing off with four Ohio teams making it to the Sweet Sixteen–Ohio University, Ohio State University, Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati. However, I am rooting solely for my Bobcats to make it to the Final Four. Let’s see what happens! :-)

In the meantime, there are many festivals going on this weekend. Celebrating 100 years, The Cherry Blossom Festival kicked of this week as well as the Split This Rock Festival. On Saturday, for one day only, the Washington National Cathedral opens for a tower climb for visitors to climb 333 stairs to the top for a breathtaking view of the District. And the DC Environmental Film Festival closes out on Sunday.

Be safe and enjoy the weekend!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl :-)

Hello Everyone!

I was so excited to view the video “Be Good” the title track from Gregory Porter’s new album.  It tells the story of unrequited love.  However, with the help of cupid, the lion eventually gets the girl! :-)

In a great interview with Okayplayer’s The Revivalist, Porter reveals that the song “Be Good” was inspired by someone he was hanging out with who wasn’t his girlfriend, but he wanted more in the relationship.  (We all have been there! :-) )  When he went to a party she was having, by the end of the evening, the “relationship” was over.  To soothe his heart, he said he needed ”a grown man’s lullaby”.  He states “I’m still able to be strong; I’m a strong man. But I can express the vulnerability by singing this lullaby and express the pain that I had from this relationship not coming to fruition.”  And this is why I love Gregory Porter.

With all of the recent excitement surrounding jazz artists, I believe Gregory Porter should be mentioned in the same breathe as his fellow jazz artists  Robert Glasper and Esperanza Spalding.   This is an OUTSTANDING album that needs to be in your collection.  And this video is just as outstanding featuring DC artist Holly Bass showing off her dance moves. :-)   Pick up a copy of “Be Good”.  You will not be disappointed.  Enjoy!

In 2011, Reel People Music released the soulful album ‘Reel People Present Golden Lady’.   The title track, a rework of Stevie Wonder’s classic “Golden Lady” featuring the beautiful vocals of  Tony Momrelle, went viral on the web.

Just when you think it can’t get any better, Reel People Music releases a video for the track.  Set in Paris, Tony woos his “Golden Lady”.  Enjoy! :-)
