AAA offers free 'tipsy tow' service on New Year's Eve

AAAtowtogo.jpg

If you have too much holiday cheer, don't get behind the wheel and drive drunk. Get a free tow home on New Year's Eve from the American Automobile Association's Tow to Go program. The offer is open to everyone, no membership required.

Call 1-800-AAA-Help and a tow truck will deliver you and your vehicle home safely, no charge and no questions asked. The free service, a partnership between AAA and Budweiser, is 100 percent confidential.

Tow to Go is offered from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day and at various times throughout the year, like Super Bowl and St. Patrick's Day.

In 2010, AAA received 2,400 calls; nearly 14,000 intoxicated drivers have used Tow to Go since the program began in 1998, according to a press release.

Free Tow to Go coverage is offered in Florida, Georgia and parts of Tennessee.

Sears, Kmart to close in Pompano and West Palm Beach

sears-logo.jpg

A Pompano Beach Kmart and West Palm Beach Sears are among the 120 stores set to close after Sears Holding Corp.. reported a slump in holiday sales this year.

The company announced that it will close up to 120 full-line Kmart and Sears stores across the country in order to generate up to $170 million in cash, according to a news release. Sears Holding Company released an initial list of 79 stores that are scheduled to close.

Among those slated to close is a Kmart at 2421 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach and a Sears Essentials store at 4560 Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. Eleven Sears and Kmart stores in Florida will close.

Sears Essentials are converted discount Sears stores that began as branches in 2005. The mid-sized stores are commonly found in shopping plazas and strip malls and are similar to discount clothing outlets.

Sales at Sears Holding stores have declined every year since 2005, when Sears and Kmart merged in an $11 billion deal. The company likely will face more closings to cut expenses and remain competitive against rival retailers, such as Walmart and Amazon, analysts said.

Lawrence Zolnowski, president of the Broward County Chamber of Commerce, estimated 30-100 employees could be impacted by the Pompano store’s closing.

“Job loss is never a good thing, and I’m sure we’re going to feel the damages because of that,” he said.

On Thursday, Sears could not give the number of employees affected by the closings.

Kmart and Sears combined have 2,177 stores nationwide. Kmart stores in Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Davie, Boca Raton and North Miami will remain open.

Among the Sears stores that will remain open are those at the Westfield Broward, Coral Square Mall and Town Center in Boca Raton.

It is unclear when the 79 stores will close. Sears did not announce whether there would be liquidation sales.

On Tuesday, Sears' shares fell 27.2 percent to close at $33.38, the lowest since December 2008. On Thursday, the stock finished up 43 cents, or 1.3 percent, at $32.90.

Sears Holdings Corp. is home to Craftsman tools and Kenmore appliances. On Thursday, the stock was valued at $3.57 billion.

Company sales were down 5.2 percent during the 2011 holiday shopping season, compared to the same period a year ago.

The closings follow Sears' announcement last quarter that it would shut 10 stores nationwide.

Sears' problems also hit shares of appliance maker Whirlpool Corp., which last year derived 8 percent of sales through the retailer. Whirlpool shares fell 8.9 percent to close at $46.62.

The drop in share price was a big blow for investors.

Fairholme Capital, Sears' second-biggest shareholder with 15.2 percent, saw the value of its stake drop to about $570 million on Tuesday, a potential loss of almost $180 million since the end of the third quarter.

Information from Reuters news service was used to supplement this article.

Track Santa Claus on his trek around the world

noradblog.jpg

It's a countdown to Christmas. But before visions of sugar plums dance in their heads, boys and girls can track Santa Claus' journey around the world using the North American Defense Command's NORAD Santa Tracker. Watch in amazement as cameras capture images and videos of Santa and his reindeer as they make that magical trip around the world.

There is some fun stuff to explore on the site. You can visit the North Pole and listen to the famous letter written in 1897 by a little girl named Virginia O'Hanlon asking a New York newspaper editor if Santa Claus was real. You can hear his famous response, too. Indeed, how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus!

For more fun, Mom and Dad can download the plugin for 3D Google Earth and keep track of St. Nick's progress in real time, too. Also, don't forget to get hourly updates on the Jolly One's whereabouts from the Weather Channel.

Click here to see him for yourself. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

6 last-minute holiday gifts

Yup, you waited until the last minute. So now what?

There's still time to get a gift that's personal, but won't break the bank. Try these crunch-time gift ideas for friends or family:

lastminuteholiday.jpg align="right" hspace="5" />

Jewelry: Go with something classic. Sterling silver earrings, bracelets, necklace and pendant. Most department stores have sales on fine jewelry right now, so you'll get a bargain and please your lady, too.

Activity coupon: Find an activity your loved one likes or wants to try, such as a cooking or wine-and-painting class.

Local deals can be found on this shopping blog, Groupon, LivingSocial and other online shopping sites. It's as close as your computer or iPhone.

Movie gift certificates: Not sure what to get a teen-ager? Get them out of the house and to the movies with a coupon book. Local choices include Cinemark, Muvico and Regal.

2012 calendar : Find one in your local bookstore or mall that reflects the person. I bought a daily shoe calendar, for example, for a girlfriend who is a shoe aficionado.

Filled stocking: Buy a plain stocking and use a glitter pen to write your loved one's name on it. Fill it with small toys, holiday chocolates or other goodies, and something practical, like a toothbrush.

Bottle of wine: Not sure what to buy? Here are my recommendations for some better-than average wines under $20. For red-wine lovers: Joel Gott cabernet sauvignon, Cain Cuvee Meritage, Aymura Carmenere. For the white-wine preference: Clare Hills Riesling or Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc.

Or ask your friendly wine store owner for a recommendation. Slap on a bow or buy a wine gift bag, and you're done.

So don't sweat these last two days of Christmas shopping. And Happy Holidays!

Last-minute shipping options from UPS, FedEx and USPS

dropshipping.jpg

If you still need to ship presents, we've got the 411 on how to get them under the tree by Christmas morning using UPS, FedEx and the postal service. But waiting until the last minute is going to cost you some big bucks.

Most shipping websites, like UPS and FedEx offer quick quotes and estimated delivery functions so you can get an idea of when your package will arrive and how much it will cost before placing an order.

UPS doesn’t guarantee timely deliveries for UPS ground delivery services through Dec. 24. However, the company will reimburse for shipped items' value and the full price paid for packaging if the package is lost or damaged in transit. Restrictions apply. Click here for more information.

FedEx Ground and Smart Post options will be closed on Christmas Eve. However, FedEx home delivery and express options are still available. All four FedEx shipping options are closed on Christmas Day and Monday, Dec. 26. The U.S. Postal Service will still ship express packages through Dec. 22.

Most online retailers will accept orders to ship on Dec. 22 for deliveries by Christmas. Amazon will take orders through Dec. 23. For a full list of online retailer shipping deadlines, click here.

FedEx prices to ship packages across the state, say from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa, can run as much as $80 to ensure gifts will make it before Christmas Eve. UPS will ship the same 10-pound package for $77 for next-day arrival. Prices hover in the $30-40 range to deliver the gift by Christmas Eve. Prices vary depending on the weight of package and the distance in travel.

Here are some tips from UPS on how to ensure your package gets where it needs to in the most timely fashion:

Use companies that provide package-tracking numbers. That way you can see where packages as they travel. No need to call and check on arrival.

Take batteries out of toys and electronics inside packages before shipping them.

Ship wrapped gifts before you travel so that perfectly crafted bow that took so much time to create will look just as great when it arrives as when you made it.

Don't wrap boxes in brown paper or tie them with string. Paper and string can be torn off during transit; if a shipping label is torn off, expect delays.

Don’t use duct tape, masking tape or cellophane to seal boxes before shipping. Packing tape is the way to go.

Still searching for that perfect gift? Give her a $950 haircut by Ted Gibson

tlc-gibson-hair.jpg

Guys, if you're still searching for what to get your special lady for Christmas -- or if you're hangin' in the doghouse looking for quick escape -- give her the most expensive haircut in the world with renowned celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson.

A wash, cut and blow dry by Gibson at his new Fort Lauderdale salon costs nearly a grand, tip not included. But she might step out lookin' like Angelina Jolie.

Gibson is the resident hair guru who stars on TLC's "What Not to Wear" and has a long roster of celebrity clients like Jolie and Ashley Greene. He told us in an exclusive interview that he's now taking eight VIP appointments on Jan. 7, ahead of the Jan. 17 opening of the Ted Gibson Salon in the posh W hotel on Fort Lauderdale beach.

"Yes, my haircuts are the most expensive in the world, but for $950, I bring that same sensibility as when I work with Anglina Jolie, Debra Messing, Ashley Greene and Christina Ricci to name a few."

Essentially, $950 buys a transformative beauty sesson with Gibson similar to what you see happen on the fashion reality show "What Not to Wear." The TLC show features Stacy, Clinton, Carmindy and Gibson teaming to give fashion and beauty makeovers to women who need serious styling interventions.

"I spend about an hour and 15 minutes with each guest giving them a stress-relieving experience," Gibson said from his salon in New York. "I do my own shampoos, haircuts, finishes and blow dries, curling and flat ironing to take that haircut to the next level."

gibsonsalon.jpg

Gibson said he will be doing hair at the Fort Lauderdale salon, right, for a few days once a month. The next eight appointments will be available for the Jan. 17 opening.

"What I have done for Angelina and on the set of “What Not to Wear” every week is create beauty with the sensibility that is luxurious and sexy. It's an attainable luxury."

Attainable for some perhaps, but for most to spend a grand on a haircut, Gibson better have Brad Pitt waiting for an after party upstairs in the hotel.

"If you can’t see me, I have an amazing and talented staff that will give you the very best service. They’re all trained by me. Those haircuts start at $100 and up."

Call Gibson's New York salon 212-633-6333 to book an appointment or go to TedGibsonBeauty.com.

Holiday shopping online? Tips on protecting yourself using public Wi-Fi

onlineshoppers.jpg

With only nine days to go before Christmas, most American shoppers have more than half of their shopping left to do, according to a National Retail Federation survey conducted BIGresearch.

“For consumers, the holiday season is more of a marathon than a sprint – typically starting the season strong, pace themselves in the middle and gearing up again in the final stretch, a trend retailers expect every year,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay in a news release. “As the hours tick toward Christmas, retailers still have a few tricks up their sleeves to entice even the most extreme procrastinators looking to cross the final names off their lists.”

Nearly 37 million people had not even started holiday shopping as of late last week and less than 8 percent said they’ve finished their shopping.

Almost half of those will finish shopping online, said the NRF survey.

If you plan to shop on the web (2011 Free Shipping Day is Friday) take steps to protect yourself when making purchases on public Wi-Fi networks. If you surt and buy while hanging at coffee shops, restaurants or other store, might be at risk of being scammed or having your credit card information stolen, according to Green Armor Solutions, an information security software provider.

“Criminals can set up phony access points with names identical to legitimate ones, and use any one of several hacking techniques to steal data and money from users,” said Green Armor Solutions’ CEO, Joseph Steinberg.

Here are four tips from Microsoft on how to protect your privacy on public Wi-Fi networks:

Use a firewall: Some computers that run Windows Vista or XP have a built-in firewall that’s turned on by default. You can configure a firewall to better protect against viruses and outsiders trying to gain access to your information. For more information, see Windows Firewall.

Hide files: When you use a public Wi-Fi, network encryption is often out of your control. Check the privacy statement on the network's website to learn about the type of encryption used. If there is no privacy statement, it might be better not to use the network at all.
If you keep personal or financial information on your computer, consider investing in an operating system that includes the tools to protect your information through encryption.
To learn more, see Encrypt or decrypt a folder or file.

Don't risk it: If you’re not sure if the network is secure, don't type in credit card numbers or passwords. These measures provide some protection against casual hackers and identity thieves who prey on wireless networks. But if criminals are determined enough, they will eventually find a way to get around any security system.

Avoid typing sensitive information, such as your credit card number or other financial information, while using public wireless networks.

Tip: If you absolutely must enter credit card numbers while on public Wi-Fi, make sure there is a locked padlock icon at the bottom right corner of the browser window, and make sure the web address begins with "https:" (the "s" stands for secure).

Zona Fresca opens third restaurant in Pompano Beach

fresca.jpg

Zona Fresca, a casual quick service Mexican restaurant, opened it’s third South Florida location in Pompano Beach earlier this month.

The 3,400-square-foot restaurant, at 800 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, has indoor seating for 94 guests and will soon open an outdoor patio.

Reports: HP selling $99 TouchPads on eBay on Sunday

118401403.JPG

Word around the Interwebs is that Hewlett Packard will be selling refurbished TouchPad Tablets for $99 in its eBay store listed under "laptops" starting at 7 p.m. Sunday, (6 p.m. Central time) according to Gizmodo.com.

Gizmodo reports that HP will sell the refurbished 16GB and 32GB versions for $99 and $149 each, along with three-piece accessory sets (case, charging dock and wireless keyboard) for $79, according to the post. No word on how many of the now-discontinued tables will be on sale.

TechCrunch has more details on the sale, citing an HP internal memo. The memo says you will only be able to purchase the tablets using a PayPal account, so if you don't have PayPal, better set one up to be ready to buy. Also, there will be a limit of two tablets per eBay member and all sales are final with no returns unless there is a defect, according to the memo.

The sale on eBay seems plausible since HP announced Friday it was contributing its webOS software which runs HP's tablet, to the open source community. That means there is no real worry about updates and improvements to the operating software if you buy, or already have, a TouchPad.

Click here for the deal then click "Laptops."

Good luck! Let us know if you score.

Gift cards: Do's and don'ts and how to save

gift-cards.gif

Gift cards are the most requested holiday gift by American shoppers again this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation.

Thanks to the ease of electronic purchasing, instant delivery through social media like Facebook and mobile options, gift cards retain their perch at the top of shoppers' lists for the fifth year in a row, according to the federation’s 2011 holiday survey.

But despite their popularity, roughly a quarter of all gift cards purchased go unused every year. An estimated $2.5 billion in gift-card value was never redeemed in 2010, according to TowerGroup, a financial services firm.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of gift certificates:

1. Gift card exchanges: Card Hub, Plastic Jungle and Swapagift allow you to buy, sell and exchange gift cards. Save up to 20 percent on purchases from leading retailers and restaurant chains like Home Depot, Sear's, Macy's, Macaroni Grill and more.

2. Know the law: “Closed loop” gift cards, which are cards good at individual stores, restaurants or other businesses, are governed by state law, whereas “open loop” cards, which can be used any different retailers and usually carried by well known credit card brands like VISA and MasterCard, are governed by federal law. Florida law prohibits gift cards from charging fees and cards cannot expire. Federal law states that gift card may expire after 5 years.

3. Understand fees: Florida prohibits gift cards from charging fees on closed loop cards, or within the first year of open loop cards. After that, there are no limits. Federal law states that all fees must be clearly disclosed on the card or card’s packaging. Fees can only be imposed if the card has not been used for a full year, and then fees may only be charged once per month. Fees only usually apply to bank issued cards, like reusable VISA or MasterCard gift cards. Be sure to read the fine print before deciding on which gift card to buy.

4. Buy one, get one: Time time of year, many chain's offer bonus cards with purchase. There’s no hurt in purchasing a gift card for yourself. Outback is offering free $20 gift cards with purchase of a $100 gift card before Dec. 31. The bonus card is valid from Jan. 1 through Feb. 10. If you eat at Outback, it might be worth snagging this deal for yourself. Or if you buy $30 or more in gift cards at Chipotle before Dec. 31, bring in your receipt on your next store visit and get a free burrito, bowl, tacos or salad. Cheesecake Factory is offering a complimentary slice of Cheesecake with every $25 card purcahsed through Dec. 25.

5. Educate yourself: Consumer Reports offers tips on how to avoid gift card snags and pitfalls.

IKEA to install solar energy panels at Sunrise, Orlando, Tampa stores

ikea-logo.jpg

IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings retailer, will install solar energy panels at its Sunrise, Orlando and Tampa stores and in seven other locations in the southeast.

Once completed, the rooftop solar panels are expected to generate enough power to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 1,000 tons per store, according to a news release. Installion of the panels will begin this winter and is expected to be completed by summer. It's estimated the 293,000-square-footIKEA store in Sunrise will generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 134 homes, the news release said. The Broward County store opened in 2007.

IKEA currently has 12 solar energy systems set up in the U.S., and has 11 more underway. Once the 10 locations in the southeast have solar panels, more than 75 percent of the company’s stores will have sustainable rooftops.

"IKEA believes we can be a good business while doing good business," said Mike Ward, IKEA U.S. president in a news release. "This investment extends our solar presence to the Southern U.S., further reducing our carbon footprint and the intensity of the electrical grid."

Organic milk shortage expected to last until April

photo.JPG

South Florida shoppers looking for organic milk in local grocery stores may be out of luck until after the holiday season.

A shortage in the organic milk supply has caused empty shelves at grocery stores across the country.

“An increased demand for organic milk coupled with the fact that some organic milk producers are only producing traditional milk due to higher organic grain costs has contributed to the limited supply,” said Kimberly Jaeger, spokeswoman for Publix stores.

Jaeger said that all Publix stores have limited to no supplies of the Lakeland-based company's Greenwise organic milk at this time. Other organic brands, like Horizon and Organic Valley, may be limited through the holiday season too.

"This is an issue that affects organic farmers nationwide," said Louise Hemstead, the Chief Operating Officer for Organic Valley in LaFarge, Wis. "Because of the push for ethanol, grain prices have really gone up."

Publix milk suppliers are located in the Midwest and Northeast, although farmers across the country are being affected. There are no milk producing farms in Florida.

“Extreme summer heat, fires and flooding contributed to higher organic grain prices,” Jaeger said.

It is likely that organic milk supplies will not improve until the early spring time around April, Hemstead said.

Whole Foods stores in Florida are in full supply of organic milk and have not reported any issues. Winn Dixie could not be reached for comment.

Construction crews broke ground this week on Delray Marketplace, an upscale shopping, dining and entertainment center set to open in mid-November.

Confirmed tenants include Frank Theaters, a 12-screen movie theater and 16-lane bowling alley, Publix grocery store, Max’s Grille, White House Black Market, JoS. A. Bank, Verizon Wireless and a family entertainment amphitheater.

“We saw a need in the area for a sizable shopping center,” said Jason Samreny, vice president of leasing of Kite Realty Group, the Indianapolis-based owner and developer of Delray Marketplace.

The outdoor shopping complex is located at 9025 W. Atlantic Ave., on the corner of Lyons Road and Atlantic Avenue. The shopping and entertainment center is nestled in between neighborhood communities and aims to attract shoppers from Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach.

Restaurants and retailers expected to be in the Delray Marketplace include: Chico's, Max’s Grille; Famous Famiglia Pizza; Terra Fiamma; Japango Sushi Thai Asian Cuisine; Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt; Shula Burger; The Grind Coffee; Sababa Lounge; The Olive Tap; Apricot Lane; Bobby Chan Apparel; Aroma Fragrance; Charming Charlie; Venetian Spa, Chase Bank and Ted Todd Insurance.
