Printable coupon: $1.50 off Starbucks coffee in your grocery store

starbucks.gifI don't know about you...but coffee just doesn't taste the same when I make it at home. My theory is that my little plastic Braun drip coffee maker just can't get hot enough.

There just isn't enough time in the day...so I suffer through my own homemade coffee, lukewarm as it is. Can I say this in a Starbucks post...I've been buying the 4 bag special for $19.99 at Dunkin Donuts. (That's okay, this is a shopping blog, not a Starbucks ad!)

More about eBay from Super Saver Kathy

flyingcloud8x.jpgSpeaking of eBay...a few posts ago I mentioned that there are good deals to be had right now.

It's also a great place to get rid of clutter in your house and pick up some pocket change. Do you have Aunt Clara's teapot gathering dust on your sideboard or a series of children's books that your college age child never read? Guess what, chances are he's not going to read them now, and 'like new' are magic words.

If you read my bio, you know that I have a pesky little car that won't let me drive by a yard sale. Should I be embarassed to admit that the file cabinets I can finally organize my coupons in came from a spec house sale...she was asking $15 each, honestly. Half kidding I offered two for $25 and she took it...she was ready to go home. They look brand new and side by side could pass for a sideboard in my dining room. I covered them with a raffia runner from Pottery Barn that cost more than the file cabinets!

What do you think of the Wedgwood china I bought at a moving sale last weekend? Handsome isn't it? I loved it, but got buyers remorse when I tried to put it away at home. Can't pass up a deal, but what was I thinking? It's already on eBay, getting bids, and if I make any money on it, I might get that iPod I've been considering.

Look out for steals on eBay in this economy

jar.JPGAfter months of discussing shopping deals on this blog, do I dare bring up one of my favorite haunts...eBay? There's not a day that goes by that I don't thank my lucky stars that I live in the Internet Age.

In my teaching days (love those summers), I spent many a summer in London, antiquing at Portobello Road, Bermundsey Market, etc. Found some great sterling and crystal vanity jars and amassed quite a collection before the prices went sky high in the 1990s.

The timing is right if you can buy in this economy. Savvy sellers start their eBay auctions high, but occasionally you'll find the seller who tries to psyche you into bidding with a low starting price. Look out for these, there are deals to be had. A friend recently bought more jars than she meant to because she placed some lowball bids and won!

Other items to watch, if you still enjoy your sterling flatware, this could be a good time to add to your set. Or old crystal stemware patterns. No hurry, just type in the eBay search bar your pattern name, and look for a good deal every now and then. Don't think of it as taking advantage of someone suffering from the bad economy, think of it as helping someone get through the hard times.

Have you bought or sold anything on eBay recently? What good deals have you seen?

JC Penney biggest sale of season

WOW! Use your $2.50 Electrasol coupon at Publix with BOGO, you'll be glad you did

fnsh-qntm-85x85.jpgThanks Andrea for the news about the Publix BOGO on Electrasol dishwasher detergent. I've been looking for just the right time and place to use that generous $2.50 coupon from the 4/19 insert.

Hopefully you will have two coupons. Did you know when you buy-one-get-one-free, you can use a coupon for each item? The small 20-pk boxes are not marked BOGO, but they ring up that way. So buy one at $3.99 and get one free, then use two coupons at $2.50 each, and you make $1. If you only have one coupon, team up with a friend.

Just remember, you won't get money back on coupons, so you have to buy something else. I bought 4 Electrasols, and 2 Duncan HInes BOGO Brownie Mixes. Seriously, my receipt says I spent $3 and saved $23.

turquoise.jpgI was hoping these turquoise slip-on sandals from Nine West were going to become part of my summer uniform: a jeans skirt and washable t-shirt with slip-on flats. Alas, they don't come in narrow. What's your errand-running summer outfit, do you have one?

The sandals are MYPLAN, $69.99 on sale for $49.99. They also come in white but I can't quite get over the aversion to white shoes we had in high school. We didn't wear pointy high heels with jeans then either. Oh, my, prom shoes with jeans? Does anyone else still carry 'fashion baggage'? Do tell...

Click here for a Nine West coupon for a further 20% off that sale price. Or 30% off regular price items. Does anyone out there buy at full price anymore? Fellow blogger Shopper Girl tells me when she was in retail they called sale items "buyer's mistakes." Oh woe, I have a closet full of buyers mistakes! -Super Saver Kathy

Visit Borders bookstore for Mothers Day with this coupon for 30% off

Reader Robin commented on my last Borders post that she heard rumors that Borders was closing. Rather than answer in the comments I will post it here. You are right, Robin, Borders is in trouble.

The Borders chain has been having financial difficulties, as you may imagine, due to the faltering economy and Internet competition. I hate to imagine life without my favorite hangout, the Borders on Sunrise Blvd, nestled so comfortably on the river, just west of the Galleria.

Borders has closed some of it's stores, and the rest of the chain is for sale. To read the Huffington Post article click here.

I am probably as frugal as the rest of you...have been a good shopper all my life. But when it comes to buying books, I support my local Borders! There are good deals online, but not the ambience, and you can't touch and feel all the beautiful books. The home and design picture books are my faves!

Click here for a Borders 30% off one item coupon and rush on over to get Mom a book or gift for Mothers Day.

Sexy beach shoes: High tide high heels for the beach

flippers_1396443c.jpg

Our resident fashionista, Rod Hagwood, sent me a message with these shoes that look like they could be a fashion find for our fave girls in Sex and the City.

Telegraph.co.uk describes them as combining "the elegance of stiletto heeels with the swimming speed of flippers."

But any beach-going Floridian will tell you that you would never get to the water with these. Hm...Calling all lifeguards. Carrie has her stiletto stuck in the sand.

Even if you did want them, you couldn't buy them. They are the creation of Belgian artists Paul Schietekat for a 2006 exhibition.

Hope you got a chuckle. We did.

DVDs!!!!!

I know what you're thinking: "This economy is a real downer on the amount of disposable income I can devote to entertainment." I feel your pain. And going to the movies, among one of the more popular excursions that folks go for, truly takes a lot of resources, such as time, energy and, yeah, money.

Well, thankfully, Amazon.com has heard your cries. The company is having a pretty big DVD sale with some movies going for as low $5. We're not talking about titles you've never heard of, either. Some movies include: Rudy, Music and Lyrics, Apollo 13, The Blues Brothers and Spider-Man 3.

Go here for happy movie buying.

Flowers for Mom: Tips for a budget and out of town

Mother%27s%20Day%20flowers.jpg

Moms love flowers whether they live nearby or far away.

Fields of Flowers offers these money-savings tips for buying flowers for Mother's Day when you're on a tight budget:

Skip the vase and the professional designer. (Mom probably has some lovely vases and enjoys arranging her own flowers anyway.) You can do that with Fields of Flowers' "Simply Flowers" service. You choose the type and number of bunches of flowers to send, from among 35 varieties.

Field of Flowers packages them in a special way so that they travel upright in flower food solution and arrive fresh. You pay only for the flowers plus a packaging fee and normal delivery charge. A dozen long roses in Simply Flowers packaging is $12.59 plus delivery.

For information on sending flowers to moms who live out of town, check out Field of Flowers tips: Sending Flowers Out of Town. Still, it's always good to shop around, as mom would tell you!

You also can contribute to National Public Radio and send flowers to mom with a $120 donation. See Support WLRN with gift to Mom for more information. !-- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

New find for women's clothing, jewelry at Mizner Park

Francesa%20top.jpg

If you visit Mizner Park in Boca Raton tonight for its Cinco de Mayo celebration, stop by the Francesca's boutique near Starbucks. I recently discovered this store, unusual for Mizner Park, in that the clothing and jewelry in the store is different and isn't expensive.

I liked many of the colorful tops, such as the one above, and dresses, as well as $12 belts and two for $20 earrings. Dresses are $34-$44 and tops around $30-$35. The shop has lots of fun gifts as well. I spied a bride-to-be picking up some fun items for her bridesmaids for wedding shower fun.

If you're not drinking $5 Margaritas tonight offered at Mizner's Cinco de Mayo celebration, then check out their clothing online at Francesca's Collections. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Target deals week of May 3rd~5/3/09

I was out of dishwasher detergent, and had four of the $2.50 coupons from the Sunday paper (Smart Source 4/19) burning a hole in my purse. I bought them at Kmart on sale for $4, so I got them for $1.50 after the coupon. Now I see I could have gotten them for .50 at Target. It's time to stock up, strategic shoppers.

I'm fumbling around to find the Eggo deal I saw for .75. (Fumbling, for me, is the bad part of couponing.) Apples are still on sale and one pound free with Target coupon.

Saturday night fashion on Las Olas - short shorts and long dresses

We were out on the town Saturday night to check out the scene at the Las Olas Wine and Food Street Festival to benefit the American Lung Association. A sold out event, it brought the beautiful people downtown.

fashion3.jpg
We snagged a great table on the boulevard and enjoyed the fashion parade strolling by. After a few minutes we had determined there was a definite trend in the South Florida fashion scene. The ladies were wearing either sexy short shorts with high heels or long summery dresses.

Heather Keir, left, of Plantation wears a long dress from Inc purchased at Macy's. Cynthia Pappas, right, is in a blue and white print Michael Kors top from Macy's. Cynthia is a smart shopper, she paired the Michael Kors top with more economical Old Navy shorts. Who would know? Her shoes are by Marc Fisher, also from Macy's.
fashionShoes2.jpg

fashion1.jpgHigh fashion all the way, Dianna Vontroll, left, wears Catherine Malandrino top and shorts with Christian Louboutin shoes, all from Neiman Marcus. More Catherine Malandrino designs can be found at ShopStyle.

Lisa Marcello, right, wears Theory with Stuart Weitzman shoes.

fashionShoes.jpg

fashion4.jpgDenise Li of Miami is a savvy shopper. She got her white to pink variegated long dress from Saks Off Fifth. She buys what she likes and had no idea who designed it. We checked the label, it said Payton. Cute dress...does anyone know this designer?

The shoes are not visible with the long dresses, a good excuse for stretching the budget. No need for Manolo Blaniks here.

fashion6.jpg

Hope Simmons of Fort Lauderdale wears a long dress, brown on top and floral on the bottom, by Love, from Macy's. Britt Platt of Parkland wears a cute long dress from T J Maxx, our kind of shopper.

Wedge sandals perfect for summer festivals

wedge%20sandals.jpg

This spring and early summer is the time of South Florida's outdoor festivals, with SunFest in West Palm Beach and the Las Olas Wine Festival both tonight.

Dressing properly for a festival is key to enjoyment: The weather is hot so no jeans unless you're going late evening. Cotton sun dresses and light-weight clothes are best. And flat or cushioned shoes comfortable for lots of walking and standing are a must.

That's why wedge sandals at DSW caught my eye. The store and online have several varieties, in the $40-$50 range, both fashionable and easy on the feet.

So have some fun in the sunshine, hear some great music, drink some fine wine, but spare yourself blisters. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Mermaids Purse is moving

cher.jpg

If you have been in downtown Delray lately, you may have noticed that the Mermaids Purse has disappeared.

No, it's not downsizing. It's actually upsizing.

Cut 432, the trendy steak restaurant, is expanding into the Mermaid Purse's old space. The new location for Mermaid's Purse is 424 E. Atlantic Ave., just next door to Lemongrass restaurant. It's three times the size of the old place so the owners have been traveling to find merhcnadise to fill up the place.

Not only are they changing location, they are also changing the name to Posh!. The store will still carry fashion jewelry and hard-to-find handbags like Mary Frances. The ambiance will also be the same. Yes, as always, expect to hear Cher's voice blasting in the background and customers dancing while they stroll through the store.

The Grand Opening will be Thursday, May 7, in time for Jazz on the Avenue. A ribbon cutting event will be hosted and emceed at 8 p.m. by Latrice Royale. Complementary hors d' oeuvres and wine will be served. There will also be sales and door prizes.
