Violet Sortal: 1928-2012

My mom died last night, after being diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2010. Below is the gist of an obituary my wife and I put together, but I want to comment for a second, actually, about dying.

She did it perfectly.

When doctors told her about two months ago that a spot on her lung had returned, they also told her there were no real options: an 83-pound, 83-year-old who fought through one 33-session round of radiation was no candidate for another, or even a biopsy. Too weak.

So as she began to fade, she called her friends, made her arrangements and invited my wife and my kids in so she could see their faces as she placed her best jewelry in their hands.

An incredible posse of friends and relatives kept filing in and calling, sharing memories, having a laugh and smiling at her demeanor -- and frankness.

"I'm fine with everything," she said.

Hospice of Southern Illinois and No Place Like Home handled her medication and hygiene, letting us concentrate on spending quality time.

In the final days, our neighbor, Eunice Anderson, held her head, rubbed her legs and sang hymns with her. So did her neighbors Marilyn and Larry Null.

Her pain was so minimal that staff was able to skip many of the every-four-hour Oxycodone medications, and we didn't touch the morphine until the final hour (and then it was just one dose).

Sure, my family and I are sad, but I gotta tell you: If I make it to 83 and go like she did, I will have no problem with that.

Here's part of her obit:

Violet Deloris Pierce Sortal passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at home on April 3, 2012.

She lived a ridiculously productive 83 years, and was grateful every single day on this earth. Her blessings included a loving husband, two children and three grandchildren; an ability to lift up every person she met and a wonderful network of friends who were her extended family.

Violet will be remembered always for her kindness, her deep faith, her thoughtfulness and love she showered on those around her, whether it was a Hallmark card, a quick visit or her cooking (including chocolate mousse pies, stuffed shells or red velvet cakes).

Her special interests were scrapbooking, swimming, needlework and ballroom dancing with her husband, Mike, the “best partner she could ever have,” she said. She read voraciously and loved words; her son Nick, credits her for developing writing abilities that led him to a career in journalism. Her pride and joy, Aaron, called her the “best grandma ever,” as she rode elephants and swam with the dolphins with him (as profiled in a story on Atlantis I wrote with her as the centerpiece).

Updated: Florida Lotto hits for $6 million in Tamarac

The Florida Lottery yielded a single, $6 million winner Saturday night, and the winning ticket was sold in Tamarac.

The numbers were 8-14-18-24-33-37 and the winning ticket was sold at University Sunoco, 8291 N. University Drive, Tamarac. It was a quick pick.

Meanwhile, Powerball was a misses Saturday night, rolling over to $54 million on Wednesday.

The Powerball numbers: 3-21-24-28-39 with a Powerball of 24.

Fantasy 5 also was good to South Florida, and it's really nice payout: $139,916.48. The numbers were 5-16-20-23-29, and winners were sold at Publix, 225 S. Flamingo Road, Plantation (one of my regular Publixes) and Presidente Supermarket, 1895 SW Eight St. Miami.

Lottery: Couple claims $128.8 M Powerball win

A Pennsylvania man that was buying a case of beer to go claimed a $128.8 million Powerball jackpot that he won on Christmas Eve in Maryland.

But we may never know who he is. The man and his wife won their jackpot in Maryland, which does not require winners to reveal their name. That's different from Florida, for example, which lists each winner's name, age and hometown -- if for no other reason than to prove that "people really do win."

The numbers: 14, 16, 30, 51, 52 and a Poweball of 19.

The man said he walked into a restaurant called Wesley’s to purchase a case of beer and on his way out happened to see the Mega Millions and Powerball signs.

“The Mega Millions jackpot was larger, but the drawing for Powerball was that evening, so I bought two tickets for that drawing,” he said to lottery officals.

“I checked my tickets on Christmas day,” he told them. “When I saw the numbers, I started stomping on the floor and shouted to my wife to come upstairs.”

“We were in shock,” she said. “At first, we thought we’d won $20 million. To discover it was over $125 million was unreal.”

The couple has not yet decided whether to take the $128.8 million annuity or the cash option of approximately $81 million.

The multi-state Powerball game is played in 44 states and jurisdictions. I'm curious what people think about lottery rules that in some states lets people remain anonymous and in other states requires their names be public (as in Florida). What do you think?

About the author
Maybe you've made the right play, maybe you haven't. Your heart speeds up, your stomach rumbles.

That's why it's called gambling.

ACTION is a view of the numbers, the psychology and the flavor of gambling here in South Florida, through our lens.

We do have one sure bet. There's something here for you.

NICK SORTAL began playing 3-card "gut" and "Indian poker" on high school band trips, moved on to "night baseball" and "pass the trash" during a Dr. Pepper-infused midnight game in the 1980s at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and now play in a regular neighborhood Hold 'Em game in Plantation. I have been given the assignment of writing about the gambling life in South Florida casinos for the Sun-Sentinel...which means sitting around watching poker on TV now counts as research.
