Anderson Cooper

By Meredith Goldberg-Morse

Air travel must be rough for the famous. In addition to the never-ending security lines, overly intrusive pat-downs and the germ-infested recycled air that we common folk have to deal with, celebs have the additional stress of being trapped in an enclosed space with potentially overzealous fans and no viable means of escape. Anderson Cooper became fed up with one such admirer on a recent cross-country flight, causing the typically docile television personality to verbally school the offending fan. Guess that’s the price you pay for flying commercial, Anderson.

Perhaps it was the empowering presence of seatmate Johnny Weir, but Cooper became uncharacteristically “emboldened” when a nearby passenger attempted to snap a photo of the journalist as he tried to take a little snooze on the early-morning flight. Cooper’s reaction? To grab the offender’s shoulder and pose the justifiable question: “B**ch, what the … are you doing?”

He later regretted the knee-jerk reaction, but personally, we’re big advocates of sassy Anderson Cooper. And not only does the snap-happy fan have a blurry iPhone photo to document his proximity to the Silver Fox, but a kick-ass story go to with it. There are worse ways to pass the time on a transcontinental flight than being scolded by the most attractive man on CNN.

Seemingly unstoppable British boy band One Direction have partnered with environmental group Greenpeace for their petition to the United Nations to make the Arctic Sea bed a sanctuary.

Because of environmental and climactic changes, the Arctic has experienced a fluctuation of changes over the years and according to Greenpeace’s official site, oil companies and other conglomerates are using this to their advantage to divide up what is left for exploration. But Greenpeace is ready for this to stop.“We’re not going to sit by while greedy companies and selfish politicians destroy this beautiful, fragile environment," the group says. "That’s why we are demanding that the uninhabited area around the North Pole be protected by the UN and calling for a ban on offshore oil drilling and unsustainable fishing in the Arctic.”

One Direction joins other celebs like Edward Norton, Emily Blunt, Woody Harrelson, Robert Redford, Sir Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Radiohead, Penelope Cruz, Hugh Grant, Lucy Lawless and Rita Ora, who have added their names to a list that they hope will reach a million signatures to help Greenpeace in their quest.

Greenpeace will “place those names in an indestructible pod and take it to the Arctic. We’ll lower it through 4km of freezing water, planting your name on the bottom of the ocean at the top of the world. We’ll mark the spot with a Flag for the Future designed by the youth of the world.” Even One Directioner Liam James took to his Twitter and offered a heartfelt plea, “if you love polar bears like me then you need to look at this too.”

If you want to save polar bears like Liam, you can add your name to the list by visiting Greenpeace's website.

When they’re not dominating the charts or saving the planet, the boy banders are gearing up for a performance at the closing ceremonies at the London Olympics alongside another British blockbuster – Adele.

Last October, elementary school principal Justin Vernon (not that Justin Vernon, obviously) challenged the 170 students in kindergarten through fifth grade at his public school in the Boston area to read a combined 10,000 books by the end of the academic year. The challenge did not come without some conditions:

"They pushed back on me, saying 'If we're going to have to read all these books to meet our goal, you've got to do something for us," Vernon told local news station WCVB-TV. "Somehow I got stuck with dressing up as Lady Gaga and milking a cow."

Vernon made good on his promise this week when the students at Roger Clap Innovation School in Dorchester exceeded their goal by 3,000 books, averaging more than 75 books per student.

To monitor the students – three-quarters of whom qualify for free or reduced-price lunch with a fifth receiving special education services – accountable for their home reading claims, teachers at the school had parents fill out and sign logs.

"Students were always asking 'Is he really going to do it?'" first-grade teacher Tim Apple said.

They got their answer when Vernon arrived in a stretch limo wearing high heels, a frilly black dress, tiara, blonde wig and oversized sunglasses and made his way to the school's athletic field, where a cow awaited him.

Coolest. Principal. Ever.

It seems that after much talk and many a tease that R&B crooner D’Angelo is finally prepared to venture on a proper comeback. The star has just signed up for his first televised appearance in 12 years at this year’s BET Awards.

This year’s BET Awards will air at 8pm ET/PT on July 1. The show boasts many impressive performers from the hip-hop game, including Kanye’s G.O.O.D. music crew, Usher, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Big Sean, Wale and 2 Chainz.

D’Angelo will make his stateside concert return on July 4 at the House of Blues off the iconic Sunset Strip in Hollywood. It will be his first U.S. concert in years and he’s already also booked the New Orleans’ Essence Music Festival for the following weekend. Jay-Z has also tapped D’Angelo for his much-anticipated “Made in America” event in Philadelphia in September, but those are the only three dates on D’s calendar for now.

Late last year, D’Angelo returned to the stage after a tumultuous few years for a brief European tour. The shows are all in anticipation of his first album in 12 years, reportedly being dubbed James River.

D’Angelo hopped onstage with Questlove for this year’s Bonnaroo “Superjam Session,” which was an unexpected surprise to all in attendance. GQ also recently profiled the singer in his first interview in 12 years, where he revealed his new affinity for playing guitar.

Whoever you are, Mr. Avina, we salute you!

At their recent kindergarten graduation ceremony, a very talented group of kids decided to put on their fiercest faces and strike a pose to Madonna's 1990 classic "Vogue." Lucky for your Friday and mine, their teacher decided to post the video online. It is adorable!

We think Madonna, who is known for her elaborate sets and costumes, would be impressed with these kids' hustle. They hit the stage in top hats and with fans, and even break out some familiar choreography between some stellar hula hooping and baton twirling.

Check it out, after the jump. Read More...

Even the non Beliebers of the world have probably heard that Justin Bieber’s new album, Believe, was released this week. You cannot turn on the TV, radio or walk down the street without hearing his name – sometimes from a screaming mob of girls.

Jimmy Fallon heard the news from Justin himself last night, but things turned slightly competitive when Jimmy mentioned his own new album. Soon, instead of Blow Your Pants Off vs. Believe (Jimmy admitted right up front that he knew Bieber would sell more copies) it was Jimmy vs. Justin. Fallon was committed to finding a way to beat Bieber … at something.

>> Jimmy Fallon Reveals Cheeky Blow Your Pants Off Album Cover On 'Late Night'

The face-offs that followed included: video games, rock/paper/scissors, breathe holding and a grand finale sudden-death dance off. Needless to say Biebs went with the moonwalk, and the sudden death was quick. Showing it was all in good fun, the two ended their rivalry with a "hand hug" (we are going to start doing this in the MTV Newsroom in lieu of handshaking).

Learning how to hand hug wasn’t the only educational moment in this skit; both Jimmy and Justin love juice and Bieber can do way more pushups than we imagined. Either way, it looks like Justin has now officially gained one more Belieber.

NEW YORK – Guests attending an event with Swedish House Mafia's Sebastian Ingrosso were treated to a special surprise last night (June 20) in New York City, when Skrillex showed up to perform. The event was held at Skylight Studios and put on by Samsung Mobile to celebrate the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy SIII. A number of interactive rooms allowed guests to play with the device while listening to the producer-DJs spin the beats. The phone prides itself on its unique music capabilities and the ability to watch and share at the same time, going beyond content consumption and attempting to simplify how consumers share information.

Other celebs in attendance to help celebrate the phone’s launch included "Twilight's" Ashley Green, who helped guests navigate through features of the new phone, along with NBA Star Stephen Curry and Hall-of-Fame Knicks legend Walt Frazier.

Swedish House Mafia's most recent project was collaborating with Usher on the tracks “Numb” and “Euphoria” from his recently rereleased Looking 4 Myself. Usher’s love of dance music comes as no surprise, after his catchy collab with David Guetta on “Without You” and latest single "Scream." In a recent interview with MTV News, SHM’s Steve Angello emphasized their respect for Usher that made the collabs ultimately come together.

"He's always been a great artist," Angello said. "He always knows what he wants. Good collaboration, all in all. For us, we'd rather work with someone that we respect than to just work with a big name."

When Beyoncé is not singing and performing on stage, or being a wife and mother at home, she keeps herself occupied proving to her fans just how much she appreciates them.

The latest open letter from Queen Bey to appear on her website is to a fan that she met back in 2007. Timmy Kelly, then 13, had left an impression on Bey, having been born blind and suffering from Cerebral Palsy. He just graduated from high school and Beyoncé wrote the heartfelt letter below to say congratulations, and to encourage all of her fans “that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself.”

This kind of gesture is nothing new from Beyoncé – throughout her career she has been known to show her love for fans having a particularly hard time. After she got wind that a young Australian fan named Chelsea-Lee’s had been diagnosed with cancer, she wasted no time in bringing her on stage at her Sydney concert to dedicate a special performance of "Halo" to her recovery.

She also gave some NYC public school students the most memorable gym class of their lives by showing up in Harlem to lead there “Let’s Move Flash Workout” routine. Let’s be real – if B offered to teach you to dance, you would DANCE.

She doesn’t stop at individual fan reach outs either. Bey is head of the Survivor Foundation, an organization started with former band mate Kelly Rowland to aid in all sorts of disaster relief. Created after Hurricane Katrina, the foundation offers assistance and education. Her beau Jay-Z also runs the Shawn Carter Foundation, and together the power couple has raised millions of dollars for scholarships and more.

One Direction

By Zachary Swickey

Teen heartthrobs One Direction have been taking the globe by storm, but the global takeover hit a snag when the boy band charmers arrived in Sin City and were reportedly tossed out of a string of Vegas casinos for being underage. (To their credit, overseas they’re quite legal to booze and gamble as much as they want.)

Adding to the snafu is the fact that the boys were told their luxurious suite was the same one found in the instant-classic flick “The Hangover" – only to discover that the 2009 comedy was actually filmed at locations in Los Angeles.

“The boys were hoping to go wild in Vegas by boozing and gambling into the early hours,” a source revealed to British tabloid The Sun.

However, things didn’t go as planned. The source continued, “But security at every casino in town knew who the lads were and threw them out because the legal drinking and gambling age in the U.S. is 21.”

And yeah, they supposedly weren’t happy about not having the “Hangover” suite either: “Finding out the hotel suite they had ordered wasn’t the one in ‘The Hangover’ was also pretty annoying.”

The basketball court in their several thousand dollar suite must not have been enough! The Palms hotel suite they did book is two floors with its very own hot-tub, pool table and basketball court.

The gentlemen of One Direction are still on the road for their stateside tour, which hits Dallas Saturday and will later return to the scene of the crime with their final US date in September in Las Vegas.

Ann Curry

The big news today is that Ann Curry may be on her way out at "Today," only a year after she became the co-host of NBC's morning juggernaut.

Curry has been on "Today" for 17 years, acting principally as news anchor before assuming the coveted anchor chair beside Matt Lauer when Meredith Vieira exited the show last year. She's also appeared across multiple NBC News properties, from anchoring "Dateline NBC" and filling in on the "NBC Nightly News" to acting as a major international news correspondent.

She has, however, encountered a number at obstacles at "Today." Her talent as a serious news reporter has, ironically, been a point of criticism – she's not easygoing enough to co-host a morning show, which requires a balance of both serious and silly – and some have even blamed her for "Today's" faltering ratings. The show has long been the #1 show in morning television, but was beat in the ratings for several weeks this spring by "Good Morning America." The two shows continue to be consistently neck-and-neck in the ratings.

Word is that Curry is in negotiations with the network to assume a different role within NBC News and has herself long been struggling with leaving "Today." The top contenders to take the job after Curry are, reportedly, Savannah Guthrie and current news anchor Natalie Morales.

But is NBC making the right decision? Here in the MTV Newsroom, we are avid watchers of "Today," so this morning there were plenty of opinions flying around. Below, three staffers sound off on Curry's potential "Today" departure and whether she was really right for the co-hosting role in the first place.
