Suzuki says a four-door sedan version of its new Swift city car could be sourced from Thailand and sold in Australia.

Suzuki Australia hopes to see a sedan version of its city-sized hatchback, the Swift, within a few years - and it could be built in Thailand, not Japan.

While there's not been any confirmation that a sedan version of the new Swift will be built, it is a likely proposition considering the existing model is still being built in both sedan and hatchback versions for international markets.

Suzuki Australia boss Tak Hayasaki told Drive at the launch of the new Swift hatchback that a sedan version makes sense considering the increasing interest in city-sized sedans in Australia.

The new model, should it arrive, would likely be built in Suzuki's soon-to-be-opened plant in Thailand, and would be brought in to fight against the likes of fellow Thai-built small sedans such as Honda's City and the twins-under-the-skin, Ford's Fiesta and Mazda's 2. It would be the first time a Swift sedan has been sold in Australia since 1995.

"There might be a plan [for a Swift sedan] for the future, of course - but not next year," says Hayasaki.

He says the new manufacturing plant in Thailand would be a good option for the Swift sedan, taking advantage of the free trade agreement with that country that means the 5 per cent import tariff does not apply.

"We have to see the variation... so we have to see which is the best way. Because people like Japanese product, but Thai product is getting so familiar," he says. "We haven't decided at all - the Thai factory is going to produce firstly for domestic sales, and the next step will be carefully selected.

"In the next 10 years, every country could have an FTA [free trade agreement]. So, you used to have 10 per cent import duty, now its 5 per cent. And in five or six years, more countries will have no duty. So really - which country has what kind of model we're selling - [Thailand] could make sense," he says.

Hayasaki says the cost savings involved in a potential shift to Thai production could also add up to a better outcome for consumers.

But how much demand exists for a sedan version of the Swift sedan will play a large part in its future Down Under.

"Suzuki's strategy is to make the most cost-efficient model - if the quantity is there. If not, that doesn't make sense."

The Japanese brand's Indian arm Maruti Suzuki still produces the current generation Swift hatchback, as well as a sedan version known as the DZire for both the local and export markets.

The DZire never made it to Australia due to difficulty in manufacturing the cars to Australian standards. And according to Hayasaki, the next generation Swift - should a sedan version come to fruition - it's not likely that an Indian-built Swift sedan ever arrive Down Under, according to Hayasaki.

  • Why would anyone in their right mind buy one? Less practical than a hatch but far, far uglier. Pointless.

I would buy one. To say that it will be far uglier, when it hasnt ever been released is kinda crazy. I want a sedan because i dont want to cost associated with running a commodore/Falcon.
I own a current model swift, and dislike the fact it only comes in hatch.
Had my budget been able to stretch further i would have purchased the SX-4 sedan...
Bring on the swift sedan i say

  • You're going the wrong way Suzuki! Instead of adding 2 fet and a boot, you should be remove 2 feet and the back seats. Stop making cars bigger. Small cars may be a growing sector, but it is all an illusion as today's small car is the same size as a large car from 20 years ago! Every manufacturer does it with every car. Start as a small hatchback, a few revisions later its gained 20% in size and then they add a boot. Then they introduce a new smaller model underneath it. It's like they don't have the confidence to introduce a new medium/large car, so they gradually promote the car from the range below it.

  • The 1.4 litre engine is destined for Oz. Does anyone know of a 1.4 litre that ISNT turbocharged like in the VW. And VW owns 20% of Suzuki. Bigger and more weight, yet a smaller cc engine in an already underpowered small car, particularly in auto form. Food for thought.

  • Current Swift is still the best looking of all the small cars. We own two. It is the only small car that will take tall-backed people without ruining upright posture. In fact it scores, in our view, higher for head, shoulder, bum, leg and foot space than any large sedan. For space, four fat adults in great comfort. Two thin people in the back would jar their spines, so the current model only needed a rear suspension upgrade, and a more powerful engine. The road holding is superb. Why copy Renault's styling on the new model? Renaults have never sold for looks, just innovation and quirkiness!

  • I owned a swift, it was great, an 04 model. It was replaced with a 07 honda jazz and i havent looked back. Im 6ft2 and fit VERY comfortably into the jazz, and the extra room in the back of the jazz is wonderful. We loved our swifty, but now love jazzy much more!!! interior plastics on the jazz are far superior too.

  • The Swift is the best looking of the small cars but it misses the clever packaging of the Jazz.
I have spent the last week evaluating everything in the class and the Jazz wins in places the others haven't even thought of.
Try fitting 2 six foot plus people front and rear in a Swift.

Interestingly enough I let my daughter loose on the field and she came up with the Jazz as well.

  • @ Steven from Melbourne

very true numerous models come to mind that currently are huge such as the civic
but then again the CITY model that is called a sub compact car is probably like the new civic. im not sure they even make the CITY anymore

another thing that astounds me is that sub compact cars get bigger as they get a new model in, then so what happens to the large segment...do they too increase in size? im not having a go. but its a curious thought.
of course roads can only get so big... so this is the only boundary to width dimension (with height of course being strictly relegated to how big shopping centres are.. only i dont think in a practical sense they would ever increase their roof structures for people who drive so called "sky scrapers" [4WD's that are lifted to increase heights to aburd levels])
