Muse

By Jordan Valinsky

Yesterday, alt-rockers Muse announced that they'd be providing the official song of the upcoming 2012 Summer Games in London. The song, "Survival," premiered last night and was, according to the band, written "with the Olympics in mind. It's about total conviction and pure determination to win."

>> New Muse Track 'Survival' Chosen As Official Song Of The 2012 London Summer Olympic Games

"The song will be played throughout the Games including when athletes enter the stadium, in the lead up to the medal ceremony and also as the theme for all international TV coverage," the band continued on its website. "We are honoured that the Olympics have chosen our song to officially represent the London 2012 Olympic Games across the globe."

With people everywhere weighing in on the track, we wondered what other Olympic-themed songs were out there.

X Factor

By Zachary Swickey

The upcoming revamped second season of Fox’s “The X Factor” is sure to be interesting now that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have replaced Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger as judges alongside industry vet L.A. Reid and the program’s mastermind, Simon Cowell.

Season two doesn’t kick off until September 12, but auditions are well underway for the program. A new YouTube vid interview posted on “X Factor’s” official account provides a glimpse into the season two auditions in Providence, Rhode Island.

We’re first shown the dramatic entrance from the individual judges as they exit their limos and walk the red carpet with fans screaming wildly. Cowell’s entrance is a little more comical as he is seen driving a small scooter – complete with several motorcycle patrolmen escorting him – and sneaking in through a back entrance that appears to be fan-free (what a party pooper).

In the interview, Spears is asked if she’ll let any guys through simply because they’re cute – something Reid and Cowell have admittedly been guilty of when it comes to female contestants. “I think it does help a little bit if the guy is somewhat handsome,” she says, “but I feel like for the most part we try to boil it down to talent.”

Lovato explained how difficult it can be sitting in the judge’s chair, saying, “You’re always thinking in the back of your mind, if you say no, what if that is their only shot? And you let them go when they weren’t really that bad? It’s confusing, but it’s everything I expected and more with having fun and bonding with the cast.”

“Everyone’s really great except Simon,” Lovato joked about her fellow judges. The singer seems to have plenty of nostalgic love for Spears in particular, saying, “I grew up listening to her [Spears] so it’s really awesome sitting next to her on the panel.”

Spears returned the love, saying, “Same for her [Lovato] too. I totally admire her work and everything that she’s done. It’s fun!”

Ed Sheeran

By Zachary Swickey

You may have seen the name Ed Sheeran popping up lately in the spectrum of pop music news, but just who exactly is this guy? Well, Edward Sheeran is a 21-year-old English singer-songwriter-producer that you are likely going to be hearing a lot about for the next several months.

Citing another English singer-songwriter, James Morrison, as his inspiration, Sheeran played an astounding 312 shows in 2009 alone. By early 2011, he had already released 8 EPs independently. This all helped him get the attention of Asylum/Atlantic Records, who then quickly signed him.

It wasn’t long before Sheeran had a hit of his own (overseas in his native country, at least) with his debut single, “The A Team,” debuting at #3 on the U.K. singles charts. His next single, “Lego House,” was equally successful and helped his album debut, +, gain quadruple-platinum status in the United Kingdom. Earlier this year, he was bestowed with two BRIT Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough of the Year.

The album finally hit American shores earlier this month and managed a #5 debut on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Now that you know who Ed Sheeran is, you should check out the waiting list of artists who are itching to work with the rising star. Read More...

"Duet" went live for the first time last night, and as it is with every reality singing competition, the introduction of America's vote kicks the contestants' emotions up a notch. Luckily for the remaining singers on ABC's hit, they have a calming force on stage with them in the form of host Quddus.

Having worked in music and alongside musicians for so long, the former MTV on-air star is particularly sensitive to the feelings of the competitors. Asked by MTV News if he had any embarrassing red carpet stories, Quddus told us that while he's never done anything too crazy on the red carpet, he has let his strong opinion on how reality show hosts treat contestants get the better of him.

"I just went in. I was like, you what, let me talk about a couple of these other hosts. I straight up called out Steve Jones on 'X Factor,'" Quddus told us when he stopped by the MTV Newsroom (his old stomping grounds). "I'm sorry, but I saw the dude not handling a contestant with any kind of compassion and there's just no excuse for that."

But when we reminded him that Jones was no longer with "The X Factor," that's when he really let his feelings be known.

"He's not there anymore! Steve Jones, you lost your job for a reason, boy," he exclaimed. "I'm sorry, but in the space that I deal with, you've got to have heart, you've got to care about the people that are putting their dreams on the line for your entertainment. Are you kidding me? You can't have a little sensitivity for a couple of minutes for this person? Steve looked like he was too cool for school, man. I was like, nah, nah, never that. So that's definitely a big difference between our show and the other show is that I care a lot about these people."

Strong words, but he says that working in music A&R before he broke out as a host on MTV taught him how personally the contestants take the words of the hosts and judges on shows like "Duets," The Voice" and "The X Factor." "I know their struggle because I was in A&R at a record label for years, and so I know that this is not a joke, this is not simple entertainment for these people," he continued. "This is their dream that they've built up years for."

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is making good on her promise to empower youth through her Born This Way Foundation.

The pop superstar has announced that the BTWF is preparing to launch an unprecedented youth-led initiative that will be dedicated to affecting change in homes, schools and communities. Beginning later this summer as students prepare to return to school, the BTWF will begin to supply toolkits outlining activities and events to help provide a foundation for the groups to build upon to help identify and tackle issues that are unique to their localized communities while exemplifying the foundation's pillars of “safety, skills and opportunity.”

More information on the specifics of the project will be announced throughout the summer.

“Through these youth-driven organizations, we can continue building the kind of world my daughter and I dreamed of when we started Born This Way Foundation, and we are excited to continue to engage youth to help shape their movement,” Cynthia Germanotta, president and co-founder of the BTWF (and you know who’s mom), said in a statement. “Together, with our youth, we can create a kinder, braver world where everyone is accepted for the person they were born to be.”

While we wait for more information about the planned initiative, the BTWF is asking supporters to help decide on a name for the groups by voting online for one of the following names or suggesting their own:

>> Born Brave Hubs – Because groups are youth-led with youth at the center of each “Hub.”
>> Born Brave Nation – According to BTWF, “This name reflects the fact that we are creating a brand new, borderless nation that celebrates kindness and bravery.”
>> Born Brave [City]: [personalization] (e.g. Born Brave Chicago: Superstars)
Allows groups to personalize their name to make it their own.
>> Born Brave ______ – This one, it seems, is up to you!

Don’t like the above suggestions? Think you have a better idea that is in line with BTWF’s mission? Join the movement and make your voice heard. To sign up to become a founding member of a group in your area, visit http://bornthiswayfoundation.org/namethatclub.

Ellie Goulding

By Zachary Swickey

The woman responsible for stealing the heart of Skrillex, British singer Ellie Goulding, is reportedly working on new music with in-demand producer Calvin Harris.

The charming singer revealed the juicy tidbit on her Twitter account, writing, “In the studio with Sir @CalvinHarris,” to which he responded on his account, “YAAS!”

It wasn’t long ago that Goulding was also in the studio working on a new song with boyfriend Skrillex and members of Swedish House Mafia, which could also end up on her upcoming effort.

SHM member Sebastian Ingrosso discussed the collab with Billboard, saying, “We made a demo and it was amazing. We had a blast. Ellie is a great artist … her voice is amazing. Skillex, enough said, he is Skrillex.”

Goulding also recently celebrated a notable milestone: selling over a million copies of her first US single, “Lights" (below).

Scottish producer Calvin Harris also has plenty to celebrate. He recently produced and was featured on Rihanna smash hit “We Found Love” and Cheryl Cole’s “Call My Name,” in addition to working on Tinie Tempah’s upcoming single. Ri even showed her loved by making a surprise appearance at Harris’s set during the Coachella Music Festival earlier this year.

The DJ’s third studio album is expected to drop in the states on October 30. The album will feature his catchy singles “Bounce,” “Feel So Close” and “Let’s Go,” as well as “We’ll Be Coming Back,” which features British rapper, Example.

The Flaming Lips are barreling their way through the O Music Awards — and into the Guinness Book of World Records — aboard a tricked-out tour bus, and they're less than eight hours away from besting Jay-Z's mark for most shows played within a single day.

And in typical Lips fashion, they've made each stop on their OMA trek — five so far, in cities throughout the South — a uniquely insane experience. They've been joined friends like Grace Potter, Neon Indian and Jackson Browne, torn through a litany of covers and generally wreaked havoc at every possible opportunity. If all goes according to plan, they'll wrap things up (and officially enter the Guinness Book) with a triumphant set tonight in New Orleans, sharing the stage with Grimes.

Rihanna, Instagram

By Zachary Swickey

Smoking hot Rihanna had to evacuate her hotel in London yesterday after a fire broke out in one of the elevator shafts.

The Barbadian-born singer was rushed out of the Corinthia Hotel in Whitehall around 6 a.m. Thankfully, the fire was only minor, but around 300 hotel guests were evacuated from five-star digs, reports Metro.

It didn’t take long for Ri Ri to take refuge in a cab and tweet pictures of the incident onto Instagram.

“Roamin da streets since 6am! Fyah in da telly #evacuationlife,” she wrote.

A spokesman for the hotel explained that the fire started "at approximately 6.30am, one of the service elevator motors burnt out. There was a slight discharge of smoke and because of our robust fire management policy, the alarms were activated and a full evacuation of the building was carried out."

He further elaborated: "As a matter of procedure, the fire brigade were called to carry out full safety checks throughout the building. All guests were safely accounted for and allowed back into the hotel soon after 7 a.m."

With Rihanna safe and sound, she can continue her string of successful European shows. On Sunday night (June 24) she appeared with Jay-Z at BBC Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend festival.

Next, she’s set to headline the Wireless Festival, taking place from July 6-8 at London’s Hyde Park, for about 65,000 fans. Other notable headliners include Drake and DeadMau5.

Ann curry

Ann Curry officially announced her departure from the "Today" show this morning in a tearful segment just before the 9 o'clock hour. With co-anchor Matt Lauer, weatherman Al Roker and news reader Natalie Morales by her side, she choked up as she confirmed the news, saying she will stay with the NBC family as an anchor at large and national/international correspondent, "which essentially mean I get tickets to every big story we want to cover with a terrific team of my choosing."

Curry was more real during her announcement segment than she's been in the entirety of her tenure as co-host of "Today." "For all of you who saw me as groundbreaker, I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line. Man, I did try," she emotionally explained. "So to all of you who watched thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me touch yours."

After that, Lauer, Roker and Morales offered up remembrances of her tenure with the show and bid her adieu. When they returned from commercial, she was gone.

Her exit stands in stark contrast to the one given Meredith Vieira barely more than a year ago. Vieira's exit was celebrated with a show-long farewell complete with lavish clip-show tributes, a rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'" (seriously), Carol King (one of Vieira's favorites) performance and a flood of tears from her fellow anchors and crew. Of course, the circumstances of Vieira's departure were very different: she left of her own accord and was universally adored by fans of "Today" as well as the show's team. Curry leaves amid turmoil that she wasn't connecting with audiences and rumors of backstage drama.

Ultimately, we've long been of the opinion that while Curry is a fantastic hard-news journalist, she was never really a good at covering the fluffier stuff and is perhaps too serious a person for the morning show format itself. Clearly, she was quite good at her job as full-time news anchor of "Today" – a position she held for more than 14 years – and has long been one of the strongest stand-in anchors on "Dateline NBC" and the "NBC Nightly News." Co-hosting opposite the malleable Lauer just wasn’t a good fit; she's better suited to other things.

>> Ann Curry Tearfully Announces 'Today' Show Departure

But watching her brief and sincere farewell and subsequent disappearance from the screen, we were saddened that she wasn't given a more proper goodbye. While her year as co-host was rocky, she has been with the show and, in some capacity, with NBC News for nearly two decades.

She deserved better. Perhaps not an entire show, like Vieira got, and certainly not a false, happy-go-lucky farewell celebration, but an extra segment or two celebrating her years-long contribution to the show. Maybe some clips of the wonderful news reporting and serious interviews she contributed. While she lacked the lightness to host, Curry brought a great deal of depth to "Today," and that's no small thing – the show needs both to succeed the way it long has.

>> Newsroom Sound Off: Is Bumping Ann Curry From The 'Today' Anchor Spot The Right Choice?

This is clearly an emotional time for Curry. It would have been nice for her many fans (and for the woman herself) to see that while things didn't work out in the long-run, she was a valued member of the "Today" family and that her years in Rockefeller Center were as appreciated as they deserved to be.

Exactly how appropriate a pose the 15-year-old is striking is another story.

Madonna's very own Material Girl, Lourdes Leon, had a little fun backstage on mom's "MDNA Tour" and tried on her mother's cone bra costume over her clothes and struck a sassy pose. The image was tweeted from the M and L's Material Girl Twitter account with the caption, "Lola backstage at MDNA!"

Check it out:

Material Girl, Twitter; Getty

Madonna made the cone bra famous (infamous?) on her 1990 "Blonde Ambition" tour and had the design's original designer, Jean Paul Gaultier, revamp the classic costume for her current "MDNA Tour."

After Lourdes was busted smoking a cigarette by photographers earlier this year, Madonna told "Rock Center's" Harry Smith that she "wasn't very happy" and felt she needed to toughen up as a mother. We assume these images – though Lola is clearly just goofing around – will only serve to stiffen her resolve with the daring teen.
