The husband of Michaela McAreavey, the Irish honeymooner murdered in Mauritius, interrupted the trial of two hotel workers charged with killing her to accuse one of their lawyers of lying about what happened.

John McAreavey has previously sat silently through harrowing evidence about how the 27-year-old teacher was strangled in their room at the Legends Hotel.

But on Monday, as the barrister for Avinash Treebhoowoon outlined for the jury at Mauritius' Supreme Court his client's claims that he was forced to sign a confession after being tortured by police, the widowed accountant said: "Lies."

Neither the judge nor lawyer Sanjeev Teeluckdharry reacted to Mr McAreavey's interruption, which came close to the end of his address.

Mr Teeluckdharry told the jury that Mr Treebhoowoon would give evidence today to explain how he had been "wrongly accused".

"He will tell you how he was tortured relentlessly by unscrupulous police officers who were in an indecent haste to obtain a confession," he said.

He went on to detail some of the punishment meted out to his client, including claims that he was stripped naked, beaten on the soles of his feet, half-drowned in a bucket of water, slapped and punched around the head and threatened with a revolver by detectives.

"I have heard his ordeal many times and I must tell you I'm not immune from it," said Mr Teeluckdharry.

"I must tell you it's not for the faint-hearted."

Mr Treebhoowoon, 31, and Sandip Moneea, 42, deny strangling the daughter of the Tyrone Gaelic football boss Mickey Harte last January. The trial continues.
