Abstract (Document Summary)

The investigation of the explosion of TWA Flight 800 may change focus today, from recovering bodies to recovering wreckage. No victims were found Tuesday or Wednesday. Robert Francis of the National Transportation Safety Board said it's ``increasingly unlikely'' that the remaining 35 bodies will be recovered because ``there is less and less wreckage that might be covering up bodies.'' So far, 195 of 230 passengers and crew have been recovered. Also:

POSTAL CHANGES: Security concerns after the TWA Flight 800 explosion is bringing a change in airmail handling. Beginning Aug. 16, parcels that weigh a pound or more must be presented to a post office clerk, instead of being dropped in one of the nation's 300,000 mailboxes. The aim is to decrease chances a bomb will get aboard a plane. Postal Service spokesman Jim Van Loozen said the change is expected to affect less than 1% of the 50,000 daily parcels because most people go to a postal counter anyway to have their parcels weighed and to pay the postage.

ASSISTED SUICIDE: Two unsuccessful attempts to convict right-to-die advocate Jack Kevorkian of assisting in suicides cost Oakland County, Mich., prosecutor Richard Thompson his job. ``He assisted his own political suicide by the continued prosecution of Kevorkian,'' said David Gorcyca, a Royal Oak city councilman who defeated Thompson in the Republican primary Tuesday. Thompson, the first Oakland County prosecutor in 24 years to lose an election, agreed that the controversy clearly was an issue in his defeat.
