Dear Donors,
As we prepare this statement we are truly overwhelmed by the tragic loss of life which has prompted its necessity. In the wake of Sunday's devastating accident, individuals close to Jonel Gonzalez sought an avenue through which they could support Jonel and the rest of his family. The creation of a fund to cover the expenses of the final arrangements for the relatives which had perished was presented and quickly executed. Through the extraordinary efforts of the community at large over the course of three days approximately $125,000 was raised. In preparation for the transfer of these funds to the Gonzalez family it was brought to our attention that the Dominican Consulate in New York City had decided to facilitate the payment of the vast majority of the costs associated with final arrangements. As you can imagine we were overjoyed at the news but it left us wondering what would become of the outstanding funds.
When the goal of $100,000 was set, it was with the understanding that it would only scratch the surface of need in this situation. The impact of this loss extends beyond the expenses of final arrangements but also the daily living of the families affected. With the loss of income associated with this tragedy both the Gonzalez and Nuñez families were sure to struggle. The education of the surviving siblings was in danger given the expense associated with schooling. It is with this knowledge that the following decision was made.
After speaking with Jonel, his father Mr. Gonzalez and his uncle Mr. Nunez regarding this matter it was quickly understood just what we could do. Mr. Gonzalez, with the assistance of a community attorney and Chase Bank, was able to establish a trust for the family members affected. As such, the entirety of the funds collected will be deposited into this trust for the ongoing needs of the families. We are encouraged by the fact that the needs beyond the final arrangements will truly be met. As members of the community we are deeply appreciative of the efforts which have brought us to this point and truly humbled by the generosity and humanity which was displayed.
