The third single peeled off the massive Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, "Night Fever" rode the wave of its predecessors to become that album's biggest hit single, remaining on the top of the pop charts for two months in early 1978. Asked by their producer, Robert Stigwood, to write some songs for an (at that time) developing film that he was involved in, the band came up with some tunes without really knowing much about the project. "Night Fever" inadvertently perfectly embodied the emotions that the filmmakers were looking for. The song not only became anthemic to the project, but also sparked the title as well -- shifting it from the intended "Saturday Night" to the iconographic Saturday Night Fever. Capturing the perfect blend of ballad and balls-out disco, "Night Fever" was less a song than a call to a way of life. And again, the Gibbs' vocal mastery was showcased as beautifully as their harmonies. Driven by an almost subliminal chukka-chukka guitar and strings to make Van McCoy weep, "Night Fever" hovered between smooth pop and melancholy balladeering. It was an odd dichotomy for such a sex and drugs and disco ball sound, but it worked -- pure pop from the masters.
