Le Grand Rex
Le
Grand Rex is the largest and well-known theatre and music
venue in Paris
. It
is well known for its room with 2,800 seats, its starry vault, its
water spectacle and its
Art Deco style
architecture. It also features the largest screen in Europe, called
grand large. It was used as a "Soldatenkino" (Soldier's
theatre) during the German occupation.
The theatre was built by
Jacques
Haïk, a wealthy film producer.
Designed by Romanian-American architect John
Eberson, renowned known for his previous work with movie palaces in the United States
Construction began in 1931 opened its doors the
next year on the night of 8 December. It has had protected
status since 1981.
Events
The theatre is host to the Jules Verne Adventure Film Festival, a
six-day event that attracts more than 48,000 attendees and is the
most important adventure and discovery film festival in the world
each April. In December there is the
Féerie des Eaux, an
aquatic-themed event featuring 1200 onstage jets of water,
centering around a recently released
family
film.
