Northwestern Minnesota is beautiful and scenic country. Becker County is situated in the heart of Park Region and is considered one of the state's most beautiful and versatile recreation areas with over 400 lakes. The Chippewa (Ojibwe) Indians were the original inhabitants. In 1867, a treaty was signed establishing the White Earth Reservation, and designating a large tract of land in the northern part of Becker County as home for the Chippewa Indians. The reservation includes the White Earth State Forest, as well as all of Mahnomen County, a land of gentle rolling prairies, beautiful spring-fed lakes, and lush forests. Clearwater County is home to the source of the Mississippi River, at Lake Itasca. The beauty of this area with its tall virgin Norway Pines and majestic white pines has been preserved in Itasca State Park.

However, the region suffers from a shortage of the private sector financial resources needed to maintain and expand its economic development activities. The poverty rate varies from county to county, with the highest rate in Mahnomen (35%) and the lowest in Pennington (16%).
