Francis Mill doesn’t just live with his art—he resides within it. The co-owner of Hackett | Mill gallery considers his home an ever-changing work of artistic expression. “It’s a living piece of sculpture that I’ve been working on for a long time,” he says. The sculpture began with Mill’s purchase of a condominium in a 1937 building that started its life as a warehouse for a pharmaceutical company. The historic distinction was important to Mill, who looked at 12 different condos before settling on this one because he felt it had more character than the newer homes on the market.

Once he moved in, Mill—equipped with degrees in architecture and studio painting from the University of California at Berkeley, as well as strong opinions about how things should look—began to shape the physical space and build his art collection.
