Self-Guided Tours: Grade 6

Self-Guided Tours

Create your own field trip adventure! Self-guided tours give you and your students access to all of the historic areas allowing you to cover a variety of Indiana academic standards, including social studies, language arts, math and science. Students will explore and engage in history bringing the past to life in ways a textbook cannot. Reservations required.
Who: Grades K–12
Dates: April: Thurs.–Sat.
May-October: Tues.–Sat.
Times: 9:30 am–2:30 pm
Groups scheduled every 15 minutes.
Length: 3 to 4 hours recommended for a complete experience
Cost: $5.00/student; $8.50/adult chaperone
Teachers and school staff get in free.

Special Interest Programs

Immerse your students in history with fun, interactive special interest programs. Students will dive into the history of early Indiana with the guidance of a Conner Prairie staff member. Read about the programs below. Reservations required.

Dates: April: Thurs.–Fri.
May– October: Tues.–Fri.
Times: 9:30 am–3:30 pm

Groups of 25 scheduled for each program.
Length: 1 1/2 hours unless otherwise noted
Cost: $5.50/student; $5.50/adult chaperone
Teachers and school staff receive free admission.
Pre-payment is required.
Add a Self-Guided Tour for just $3.50/student and $8.00/adult. 
 

 
Moving-West
Moving West
(Grades 4–8)
Dates: April: Fridays
May: Tuesdays
Length: 2 hours

Become an 1836 pioneer with your sights set on moving west. You just sold your farm in Ohio and are preparing to settle your family in Indiana. Figure out which goods to take along, buy land at an auction and survive using 19th-century tools. Work as a team to make decisions and deal with the consequences.

Gone for a Soldier
(Grades 4 & 8)

Immerse your students in answering the call to enlist to save the Union. Discover what soldier life was like off the battlefield through participating in drills, exploring typical pastimes and learning a song. Learn about soldiers’ gear, and gain an appreciation of the hardships of soldier life.
Dates: April 12, 13, 19, 20
June 5
Times: 9:30 am–12:30 pm
Length: 45 minutes
Cost: $2student; $2/adult chaperone.
Teaching and school staff receive free admission.

Woodland-Indians-Art-and-Culture
Woodland Indians: Art and Culture
(Grades 2–8)

Experience the rich tradition and deep-rooted history of the Lenape Indians. Talk to members of the Delaware Tribe who travel all the way from Oklahoma to teach you about the Lenape culture. Attend six sessions, including an outdoor dance program.

Length: 4 hours

Prairie-Holiday
Prairie Holiday
(Grades 2–6)

Explore the holiday traditions as you travel back in time to December 1836 with a visit to Prairietown. One of the town residents has lost a cherished holiday heirloom. Help in the search, meet a variety of characters, find out about their daily lives and holiday traditions, and take part in hands-on activities. The program includes a visit to Gingerbread Village.

Dates: December 6-9 & 13-14, 2011
Times: 9 am–12:20 pm
Length: 1 3/4 hours
Cost: $5.50/student; $5.50/adult chaperone.

Civil-War-School-Days


Civil War School Program
(Grades 4–8)

Explore social, political and military topics in an educational Civil War program tailored specifically for school groups. Take part in infantry drills and visit Abraham Lincoln. Learn about life in the “28th U.S. Colored Troops” and watch a theater performance on the Emancipation Proclamation.

Dates: Thurs. & Fri., May 17 & 18, 2012
Times: 10 am–1pm
Length: 3 hours (includes 30 minute lunch)
Cost: $5.50/student; $5.50/adult chaperone.

Follow the North Star: Underground Railroad Experience
Presented by
(Grades 8–12)

Step into the shoes of a fugitive slave on the road to freedom. Travel as a group and search for safety along the way, but watch out for slave hunters motivated by financial rewards. This glimpse into our past will affect you in ways that reading a book or watching a movie about this painful part of America's history cannot.

Dates: March 14-16, 20-23, 26-28
April 3,4,10,11,17,18,24 & 25
Times: 9 am–1:30 pm - Groups of 15 scheduled every 15 minutes.
Length: 1 1/2 hours
Cost: $8.50/student (One adult free with every 14 students; $8.50/additional adult)
Deposit is required.
