2011-12 Program Information for Home Schools


December

Prairie Holiday
(Grades 2-6)

Explore the holiday traditions as you travel back in time to December 1836 with a visit to Prairietown. Meet a variety of characters, find out about their daily lives and holiday traditions, and take part in hands-on activities. The program includes a visit to the gingerbread village.

Cost: $5.50/person
Pre-payment is required.
Dates: Home-school Day when individual home-school families can sign up for this program is Thursday, December 8 at 11:40a.m. Groups of 10 or more can sign up for any open time on the following dates: December 6, 7, 8, 9, 13 & 14.
Times: 9 a.m.-12:20 p.m. (Groups of 25 scheduled every 20 minutes.)
Length: 1 ¾ hours
Standards: Soc. Studies: 2.1.4, 3.3.9, 4.2.6, 4.4.1; Language Arts 2.7.3, 3.7.1, 4.7.15, 5.7.2, 6.7.2

Gingerbread Jamboree
(Pre-K-Grade 1)

Run, run as fast as you can! The cook is making a fresh batch of gingerbread, but her prized cookie has run away! Go on a hunt around Conner Prairie looking for hints and footprints from the missing cookie. Meet the Gingerbread Man, enjoy a gingerbread man cookie and visit the gingerbread village.

Cost: $5/person
Dates: Home-school Day when individual home-school families can sign up for this program is Thursday, December 8 at 11:50 a.m. Groups of 10 or more can sign up for any open date and time on the following dates: November 30 and December 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 & 15.
Times: 9:10 a.m.-2:10 p.m. (Groups of 25 scheduled every 20 minutes.)
Length: 1 ¼ hours
Standards: Soc. Studies: K.3.1, 1.3.8; Science: K.1.1, 1.1.1; Language Arts: K.3.1, 1.7.6
 

Science Lab: Gingerbread

Civil War School Program
(Grades 4 & 8)

Explore social, political and military topics in an educational Civil war program tailored specifically for school groups. Topics include soldier life, artillery, and spies and ciphers.

Cost: $5.50/person
Dates: Home-school Day when individual home-school families can sign up for this program is Friday, May 18. Groups of 10 or more can sign up for May 18 as well.
Times: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (includes a 30-minute lunch)
Length: 3 hours (includes 30-minute lunch break)
Standards: Soc. Studies: 4.1.8, 4.2.6, 8.1.21, 8.1.28; Science (2000) 4.6.1, 5.1.5, 6.4.13, 7.1.9; Language Arts 4.7.2, 8.7.1

Young and old can learn firsthand what the Civil War was about from Union and Confederate soldiers.

Science Lab

Discover science through the lens of history with fun and educational activities for all ages! See how science connects to your life and the lives of Hoosiers from the past. Themes change monthly. The Science Lab is located on the first floor of our Welcome Center. The Lab is included in general admission and is free for members.

Power Up

August - September
Spark up some fun with electricity! Power a motor, build a circuit, light a lamp, and feel the crackle of static as you find out about making and using electricity.

Country Fair

(Free to members; included in general admission)
Presented by Dow AgroSciences
Sat., September 15; 10 a m.-5 p.m.
Sun., September 16; 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Discover what an authentic country fair was like when your great grandparents were kids! You’ll be thrilled and amazed by the games they played and odd wonders that made them gawk and giggle. Grab your family and friends and experience a 19th-century agricultural fair firsthand.

October

Woodland Indians: Art and Culture
(Grades 2-8)

Experience the rich tradition and deep-rooted history of the Lenape Indians. Talk to members of the Delaware Tribe who travel all the way from Oklahoma to teach you about the Lenape culture. Attend six sessions, including an outdoor dance program (weather permitting).

Cost: $5.50/person
Pre-payment is required.
Dates: Home-school Day when individual home-school families can sign up for this program in October are coming soon. Groups of 10 or more can sign up for October  as well, but can also sign up for the other dates of the program if space is available. (October 2012 dates coming soon.)
Times: 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (includes a 30-minute lunch)
Length: 4 hours (includes a 30-minute lunch break)
