Video captures Calif. hit-and-run, leads to arrest

(CBS News) BERKELEY, Calif. - Police have arrested an Oakland man who allegedly hit two bicyclists with his car and then fled - an incident caught on video by one of the cyclist's bike-mounted camera.

The hit-and-run occurred around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Tunnel Road in Berkeley, where the bicyclists were traveling east and were struck by a car traveling in the same direction, according to police.

One of the cyclists had a camera mounted on his handlebars. The video, posted on YouTube by brunogfmtube, shows a black car veer into both bicyclists at about the 2:40 mark.

The video had more than 100,000 views on YouTube as of Saturday morning.

According to CBS Station KPIX, Police Capt. Andrew Greenwood said the driver of the black vehicle did not stop afterward, as is required by law, so police treated it as a hit-and-run.

The riders, both of whom were wearing helmets, had abrasions from hitting the road but did not require hospitalization, according to Greenwood.

After the incident Wednesday, the suspect, Michael Medaglia, reported to the Oakland Police Department that his car had been stolen. A police alert was placed on the car.

KPIX reports that Oakland police found the vehicle Friday morning and alerted the Berkeley Police Department. After an examination of the vehicle, Berkeley police were led to Jack London Inn in Oakland, where officers contacted Medaglia late Friday afternoon.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of heroin, felon in possession of ammunition, violation of probation and felony hit-and-run.

by BigMik50 April 28, 2012 9:28 PM EDT: I ride all the time but it's never where there is that much traffic. When are riders going to realize that a bicycle on these is risky riding? Ride elsewhere, get a mountain bike and go off-road, geeeesh. It's illegal to ride a dirt bike on the road but legal to ride a bicycle. Now that makes sense.

The driver was definitely at fault but the bikers contributed to this incident by riding on congested and narrow roads.

Did that driver score two points for two riders or was it worth double since he took out two bikes at the same time??? I say it's in the double point's category.; Reply to this comment


by DGoldmiller April 28, 2012 8:38 PM EDT: The people who complain about cyclists breaking the law are people who speed, roll through stop signs in their cars, and run the beginning of the red light before cross traffic can get started.
But please, don't stop doing those things if that's how people in your city drive (you'll never get anywhere driving here in Chicago unless you do those things--well, the red light thing at least) It's possible to break traffic laws on a bike or in a car as long as you're being responsible about it. By all means, break the speed limit in your car, but don't go 60 in a 30mph zone. Run red lights on your bike, but slow down (or stop) first and make sure you're not going to get creamed by cross traffic.
The reason we have these laws is because some people (like the dude who hit the cyclists) can't be trusted to operate vehicles in good faith.; Reply to this comment

Give that driver a ticket for creaming the bicycles and give the riders a ticket for running multiple stop signs.

by flexsf April 28, 2012 8:11 PM EDT: The cyclists should've checked into a hospital. Being hit by a car has a traumatic impact on our muscular/skeletal system. A spinal cord injury will surface down the road as a result of this incident, and without their hospital visit they have nothing to link it too. I don't however agree that these guys in any way shape or form were responsible for this seemingly deliberate hit and run. People who have an "accident" pull over and render aid. The car obviously crosses the solid white line and hit not just one but both of the cyclist. Maximum penalty to the junkie driving the car.; Reply to this comment

Who else noticed that the bicyclists blew through several stop signs? Bicyclists don't seem to have gotten the message that when operating a bicycle on a public road, you are subject to all rules of the road, which include stopping at stop signs.

The driver probably swerved to avoid something else,another vehicle out of view of the camera and did not see them. While bikes are legal on the road, cyclist don't realize people while they see them, don't see them. I'd say that is due to the speed difference, drivers using cells, lighting a smoke, changing a cd etc. In an emergency situation, tractor trailer on one side and bikes on the other, mom is going to hit the bikes, least chance of getting hurt. What will happen eventually is they will be banned from more public roads due to speed difference and the number of accidents that causes. A good law would only allow them to ride where the speed was say about 25 to 30 mph, or maybe going to a bike track or trail where they don't pose a danger to motorized vehicles and themselves. The roads were built and are maintained by taxes on fuel, sidewalks from taxes on real estate and accident claims require insurance. . Bicyclist are not in the equation here. They really should stay in their neighborhoods and just ride around the block or go to designated bike trails. They can also get a stationary bike and ride in their basements. Riding at a speed at about the pace of a donkey on a roadway designed for motorized vehicles is foolish and unsafe to say the least. C'mon bycyclist, stay off the roads.

by TMA12001 April 28, 2012 6:52 PM EDT: smittyc is PROBABLY the guy in the seat next to the driver shooting up heroin while stroking the driver. ........this happens a lot more then you think and the hit & runs aren't intentional because the driver is wasted on heroin and a bl*w j*b - so don't blame the driver. Blame the heroin using idiot next to him.
