In his new book "Animal Shelter Portraits," New York photographer Mark Ross captures heartbreaking portraits of animals abandoned at a Manhattan shelter. "In putting this book together, my mission was to offer an inside look at some of the many animals that enter a high-kill city shelter; mostly former pets..." writes Ross on the book's Facebook page. "All these wonderful companion animals share one thing in common and that is that they have been given up and now have no place to go." Ross volunteered at the shelter for 21 months, according to his Facebook page. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that about 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized every year.
