Rep. Ryan knocks Obama over Senate budget

(CBS News) In the Republican weekly address, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), author of the House Republican budget, criticized the Senate and President Obama for failing to produce a budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

"The president is hunkered down in campaign mode, and seems intent on dividing Americans for political gain instead of offering credible solutions to our most pressing fiscal and economic challenges. And his party leaders in the Senate? They're about to go another year without a budget," Ryan said.

Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND), who chairs the Senate Budget Committee, this week backtracked from his earlier announcement that his committee would craft and vote on a Senate budget.

"Last week, leaders in the United States Senate, which is controlled by the president's own party, announced they would not advance a budget for the third year in a row," Rep. Ryan, who chairs the House Budget Committee, said. "Tomorrow, in fact, will mark three years to the day since the Senate last fulfilled this basic governing responsibility."

Although the president offered a budget proposal in February, Rep. Ryan blames the Democratic-led Senate's inaction on Mr. Obama.

"Regrettably, this president has failed to lead us, to unite us, and to help us address our defining challenges," Ryan said.

Ryan promoted his own controversial budget plan, which the Republican-led House passed in March. It has little chance of being voted on in the Senate.

"It would support safe, responsible energy exploration here at home to address high gas prices, and it would repeal the president's health care law, which is making it harder for businesses to hire new workers," Ryan said.

"We will get back on a path to prosperity - it is not too late to get this right. But only with the right leadership in place can we renew the American promise of leaving our children a stronger nation than the one our parents left us," he added.

For anyone not already a millionaire -- like all of the Republican presidential candidates and many GOP Congressmembers -- a better title would be "The Path to Despair." Medicare vouchers? State block grants for Medicaid, food stamps, and other aid to the poor? And of course, tax cuts for the richest among us? Norquist and the Tea Prty have adopted a strategy called "Starve the Beast". The goal is simple. Cut revenue to the US governemnt to the breaking ppoint so that funding for social programs becomes no longer possible. There chosen way to do this is to cut the revenue from the wealthiest of Americans and largest corporations with supportive financing being expected in return. This is an abberration of conservative beliefs and has put the GOP in jeopardy while at the same time putting this Nation on the brink of collapse.

by occupy_cbs April 28, 2012 8:23 PM EDT: Yes, the grover nitwitt 'starve the beast' conservitard ideology has been going on for decades, as the top marginal rate has plummeted from 91% to a mere 35% (even though most of the wealthiest Americans like romney pay less than the 15% capital gains rate), and corporations pay little or no taxes despite a 35% corporate rate that none of them pay! We're totally screwed as long as conservitards keep pushing low taxes like 'lyin' ryan's' austerity budget that will only give us another depression!

...the Republican led congress (both Senate and House), which he was a part of, turned the Clinton Surpluses into deficits, AND when George W. Bush (because of the "Bush Tax Cuts") DOUBLED our nation's debt from $5 trillion to $10 trillion.

Of course, back then, you didn't hear even a "peep" out of Paul Ryan. Now, he's "so concerned"....LOL!.... These Republicans think that they can fool all of the country all of the time. Obama and the Dems have not produced a budget for the upcoming fiscal year or any fiscal year since Obama became president.
When the Dems controlled the Congress from 2007 they never did produce one as well.

All they think of is tax, tax, tax and spend spend and spend. Even when they are stopped from recklessly taxing, they still spend like their is no tomorrow and it seems that there may not be after Obama is done.
That's how Obama ran up a 6 trillion debt in less than 4 years and we have nothing to show for it but a bad economy and record unemployment.

I am disappointerd in that Obama extended Bush tax cuts since they distribute wealth to a small minority from the Capital Gains tax rate drop. Even more disturbing than that though, is people who blindly support their party with little knowledge of the truth. You question is an example of just that.

Maybe so, but a good example of public sector cutbacks while giving even more tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations by the ignorant governor walker in wisconsin, has resulted in the worst job losses in the country since his policies took effect over the past year! While the rest of the entire country has seen private-sector job creation over the past year, wisconsin is the only state still losing jobs!

The U.S. economy grew at a rate of 3% in the fourth quarter of 2011, but still not enough to significantly bring down unemployment, since it needs to be at least 4-5%. One of the major drags on growth has been the budget-cutting that has been going on at all levels of government for the past year and a half. Over the last two years, the private sector grew at an average annual rate of 3.2 percent, while the government shrank at an annual rate of 1.4 percent.
The combined result has been an average economic growth of 2.3 percent.

If willard romney and the republicans get their way, and cut government as extremely as they would like, economic growth will plummet and most likely put us back in a severe recession or worse!

Items 1,2,4 and 5 are so out there I will not bother to address them since it's a total waste time.

Item 3, I agree that there is waste in education, but busting unions and making teachers out to be greedy is a total distortion of the facts!

How do you expect our children to compete with the other countries who have no problem with spending more to further their children's future?

Are you going to be happy when the GOP makes public education totally non-functional by cutting its budget to satisfy the greedy who want a larger piece of govenment spending to fuel their demands for more money?

I am willing to pay more for educating our children provided funding is not being wasted on purchases that provide no benefit, but I am not willing sit by and let a bunch of brainwashed conservatives spin this so they can keep funding tax breaks that have no effect on demand for goods and services.

Try doing a little research next time.

Unfortunately, the fox/rush parrots loathe doing their own research, and depend upon forwarded e-mails and the usual propaganda from the typical talking heads and conservative hate radio!

Case in point, they are still using the $2 billion loan from the Export-Import Bank approved for Brazil to buy U.S.-made equipment and services (plus many of the U.S. OIL workers are working down there now) as a means to attack President Obama and CAPITALISM!

Very silly, since their propaganda was debunked nearly 3 years ago!

One comment to your reference to an attack on capitalism. There is a flaw with capitalism. Capitalism requires an ever increasing bottom line results. As demands level off due to the world being finite in both consumersand supplies, there is only one way for companies to raise the bottom line. That way is to lower expenses. Raw materials are controlled so they go to human labor. This is what is happening today. Corporations are fighting to reduce worker pay and benefits as a result of Capitalism. This is why millions of workers in China are being 'enslaved' by their government and US corporations. This is why Governors like Walker in Wisconisn are fightiunh to erode worlers rights. We are facing the end game of capitalsim and workers are the next target.
