Coe was made an Honorary Doctor of Science whilst local Olympians 400m champion, Christine Ohuruogu MBE and leading lightweight gold medallist rower, Mark Hunter were made Honorary Doctor of Arts and Honorary Master of Science respectively.

Addressing the graduates at London's Barbican Hall, Lord Coe said: "This University is playing such a huge role towards London 2012, its legacy and the local community and it's with great pleasure and delight that I accept this award today."

Ohuruogu, a Linguistics graduate from University College London who was born and raised a stone’s throw from the London 2012 Olympic stadium, said: "I've been recognised internationally yet it's more special when it's in your local community. It's great to see you all graduate, make sure you take your skills to use outside where the world needs you."

Hunter, who was also born in the London borough of Newham and studied at Havering 6th Form College, said that he hoped to win Olympic gold in front of a home crowd. He finished his acceptance speech by telling graduates: “Get involved with London 2012 however you can. It’s going to be incredible.”
