Park Officials Set Forest on Fire

Dozens of acres of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area went up in flames Friday as part of a controlled burn in which park officials set the forest and fields on fire to preserve its health.

Acres of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area near Bushkill went up in flames .

Smoke could be seen seeping above the pine trees and flames spreading throughout the dry brush.

The fire was started on purpose by the National Park Service.

“Actually what we’re doing is a prescribed burn, or a controlled burn.  This is to maintain the open space here in the park,” said Park Fire Management Officer Cliff Lively.

Although the wildfire danger is high, park fire officials said this is the only time to torch the park because if they wait any longer it’s too green.

Water Levels a Concern for Trout Season

Trout Season opens up at 8 a.m. Saturday across the state.

Many angler’s took advantage of free time on Friday to stock up on all their fishing gear.

There is a concern in the fishing community about the low water levels of the rivers, creek and streams in our region.

Inside the Wacky Worm fishing store near Brodheadsville, customers were gearing up for the opening day of trout season.

“Bait, rod, license, pretty much everything I need,” said Anthony Ianuale of Effort.

While business had been good throughout the day, many fishermen talked about their concern about the water levels at their favorite spots to fish.

“It’s something we’re going to have to work with. My guess is they’ll probably turn off of bait within an hour. Then time to get the fly rod out and work towards fishing the naturals,” said Richard Newell of Jonas.

New PA Voter ID Law

When you go to cast your vote in November, make sure you have a photo ID with you.

A new law in Pennsylvania requires all voters to show a valid photo ID before casting a ballot. If you don’t, you won’t be allowed to vote.

“It does make it a little easier for poll workers to find people’s names,” said Sara May-Silfee, the Monroe County Director of Elections and Voter Registration.

She said the reason for the new Voter ID Law is to prevent voter fraud.

By the November election, you must present a photo ID when you show up to vote.  Poll workers will test the new procedure during the April primary.

“We’re asking for ID. If they don`t have a form of photo ID, that is acceptable, we are giving them a pamphlet telling them in November they need ID to vote,” said May-Silfee.

Several Injured in Stroudsburg Fire

Several people were treated for smoke inhalation after a small fire early Thursday morning in Stroudsburg, according to the county communications center.

The fire started just after 1 a.m. in the building that houses the Senegalese of New York hair salon and apartments on Main Street.

It is not clear how many people were in the apartments when the fire started.

Main Street was closed for a time as firefighters worked to contain the fire.

There is no word yet what caused the fire.
