With the Creative Storage Conference 2012 just one month away, I thought it might be interesting to get a glimpse of the person behind the event.
MY: How did you get into the storage space?
Tom: I started in graduate school studying magnetic recording. After university, I worked for several years designing heads and media for magnetic tapes, floppy discs and hard disk drives. After several engineer and management jobs at storage and storage component companies I started my own consulting company in 2000. Since then I have worked on many storage projects from storage devices and components to storage systems and applications. I also write reports and white papers and I started 2 conferences on digital storage and digital content applications: the Storage Visions Conference and the Creative Storage Conference. I have been the chair of the annual Flash Memory Summit for the last 5 years. For several years I have written a comprehensive report on digital storage in professional media and entertainment.

Much has been written, discussed, presented, and illustrated to summarise Digital Asset Management (DAM) and its impact in a world exploding with content. One the core values of a Digital Asset Management system is, of course, the concept of connecting people to shared data (video/images/graphics/metadata) in a fast and easy way. It is important to think further about the idea of sharing data, and realize that no matter how thorough your DAM might be in ingesting, archiving and delivering material, at some point the content inside of a DAM has to connect with a system outside if itself.

While walking the show floor last week at NAB (http://www.nabshow.com/2012/default.asp) it seems like just about every solution provider on the show floor is now offering a Digital Asset Management solution. But on further investigation, what some of them are really offering is not so much of a DAM solution as a file store solution… not the real deal in my opinion. I don’t think they truly understand the complexities of DAM. However, for some of the DAM solution providers who were present at NAB, it was good to see them pushing the limits of their solution and adapting to the shift in how we create, interact and leverage content and deliver content. I did take note of your progress! Though time is always so limited at here are some interesting innovations and inspiration from some solution providers who I was able to connect with.
