The Department of English is one of the largest and most vibrant departments at NIU. We teach courses across the full spectrum of English studies—including American and British literature, English language and linguistics, rhetoric and composition, technical and professional writing, creative writing, and English education.
Our faculty regularly publish well-regarded scholarly books and articles, earning us a national reputation for intellectual vigor. We take teaching just as seriously. Members of the English faculty have received every teaching honor at NIU.
But our greatest point of pride is the success of our graduates. Our students go on to careers in teaching at the middle or secondary level, writing and editing, higher education, and a large variety of arenas in which strong writing and communication abilities are invaluable.
