Author Title Country Edition Before Stal After Category Comments
Simonov, Constantin Days and Nights RU 1943 XXX Prose
Plievier, Theodor Stalingrad DE 1945 XXX Prose
Nekrassov, Victor In the trenches of Stalingrad RU 1946 XXX Memories Account of the Stalingrad battle by a veteran.
Gerlach, Heinrich The Forsaken Army DE 1957 XXX
Multiples Marechal Paulus DE 1961 XXX Memories Actually an assembly of documents about F.Paulus and its part at Stalingrad, compiled by W.Gorlitz, including the account of events by Paulus himself. Like Chuikov's for the Soviet part, this wotk represented the reference source for historians since its publication for the German perspective.
Corti, Eugenio Most will never return IT 1964 XXX Memories Diary of a lieutenant in the Italian expeditionary corps after the Soviet Saturn offensive, which decimated the 8th Army. Gives an interesting sideview from within the Axis 'alliance', revealing the naked truth about relations between Germans and Italians, which appear in all their precariousness.
Schroter, Heinz Stalingrad DE 1966 XXX Memories Reconstitution of the 6th Army encirclement and agony by a survivor. Rather short but still valuable.
Trennery, Mark Christmas at Stalingrad UK 1969 XXX Prose
Multiples Stalingrad: Lessons of History RU 1976 XXX Memories Another compilation of testimonies from the main Soviet formation commanders (Fronts, Armies, Divisions and other) associated with Stalingrad battle.
Krylov, Nicolaj The Stalingrad Line RU 1979 XXX Memories
Jakovlev, Nicolay 19 November 1942 RU 1990 XXX Scientific
Einsiedel, Heinrich Graf Von Stalingrad, Memories and Reassessments DE 1993 XXX Memories Book in two parts. The first is a factual assessment of events during 6th Army encirclement, through which had passed the author (a staff officer). The second is an extremely detailed analysis and appraisal, often turning to judgment, of the responsabilities of three major actors : Manstein, Paulus and Seydlitz.
Multiples Stalingrad Memory, Trilogy, III RU 1993 XXX Prose
Multiples Stalingrad: The 60 years of the battle on the Volga RU 2002 XXX Scientific
Multiples 60 years of Stalingrad battle in the Great Patriotic War RU 2003 XXX Scientific Texts from the official anniversary conference, along with excellent series of tables summarizing all units and commanders information. A major data source for this site.
Multiples Heroes of the XXth century RU 2005 XXX Scientific Volume issued from a larger serie covering all the conflict : 'XXth century's Soldiers'. Focused on Stalingrad battle, with a large chronological part, and another describing in detail the defending armies with their commanders. Rather exhaustive, with some hard-to-find data, structured in a thematic scheme.
Bastable, Johnatan Voices from Stalingrad UK 2006 XXX Memories
Jones, Michael Stalingrad, How the Red Army Triumphed UK 2007 XXX Scientific On the ground of the main events during the urban (defensive) phase of Stalingrad battle, and with extensive use of veterans accounts, the author describes the Soviet soldiers and commanders state of mind as never before. A great tribute.
Bartjasnskij, Mikhail Battle for Stalingrad RU 2007 XXX Scientific Illustrated version of '1942: Stalingrad'
Lopez, Jean Stalingrad, The Battle on the Edge FR 2008 XXX Scientific Synthetic work with excellent structuration, fully covering Stalingrad campaign after some introductive chapters. One of the most clearer presentation among all studies, featuring a richly organized mix of thematic, chronologic and other semantic divisions, and served by a vivid writing style. Unfortunately ternished by some inaccuracies.
Isaev, Aleksey Stalingrad, No land for us beyond the Volga RU 2008 XXX Scientific Extremely precise account of all stages of Stalingrad campaign, actual analysis of strength figures, uncovering of truth in some otherwise known episodes and dispelling of many erroneous 'myths'. Sometimes a bit confusing when dealing with small-detail figures, down to a single vehicle, in plain text (though many tables are also present). A reference among latest Russian sources.
Bartjasnskij, Mikhail 1942: Stalingrad RU 2009 XXX Scientific Accurate report of all stages of the Stalingrad campaign.
Glantz, David Armageddon in Stalingrad, The Stalingrad Trilogy, Volume 2 US 2009 XXX Scientific Certainly the most precise account of the battle, this volume (the 2nd in the trilogy) deals with the urban (defensive) phase of the campaign. The floopside is an austerity level in writing as high as the precision level, in which the reading experience is close to going through raw (but complete) archive material. Similar critic to usage of maps, which are raw copies of archives, disparate and poorly readable. Nevertheless, this tremendous research wotk represents the most serious reference, and the most up-to-date.

Multiples Slaughterhouse - The handbook of the eastern front US 2009 X X X Scientific An interesting initiative of covering the essentials of the conflict in a single, synthetic-data oriented volume. By default, the books are ordered by Category, then by Year of publication. Selecting a column header re-orders the list.
"Country" refers to country of first publication, usually the same as the author's origin.
"Edition" refers to first year of publication.
"Before" / "Stal" / "After" refers to the period covered.
"X" marks in these sections indicates their level of coverage by the book. For example, a book marked "XX" in "Before" and "X" in "Stal", means the book deals especially with the period of the war before Stalingrad, and gives only a brief review of the battle itself.
"Category" includes :
- Scientific (research, explanatory studies : from in-depth analysis focusing on a particular event, to encyclopedic work dealing with numerous events)
- Memories (accounts and assessments by veterans : from main and well-known actors of the conflict, to simple soldiers or anonymous witnesses)
- Prose (this could be called "Realistic Fiction", actually very close to memoristic accounts, as almost all authors listed in that category are themselves veterans or close witnesses of the events that they describe from first or third person perspective)
