Planting Trees in Observance of Arbor Day
News

Lackawanna Trail High School students planted trees Friday in observance of Arbor day and to celebrate the environment.

Getting a little dirty, wheeling some mulch and, of course, a little elbow grease, but the reward in Wyoming County was well worth it for these volunteers.

"My dad was growing up with Glen Bern Pond being drained, it really hurts him to see that, so when I can come out and plant trees and have my friends help me. It's wonderful," said student leader Emily Mattes.

The students from Lackawanna Trail High School's recycling club spent their morning making the Clinton Township/Factoryville Borough Joint Park a little more green.

"Obviously they're kids that care about the environment. They wouldn't put in so much time at school if they didn't. Now this is just another way to take care of the environment," said recycling moderator Deb Joyce.

"You're more focusing on what you're doing for the world, instead of being out here just to get out of school. We're definitely giving back to the environment just like it gave us so much living on the world," said sophomore Gabby Sunseri.

"We're like a huge family. We're always together, we do things together. It's all about giving back. It's not just a day to get out of school. We're here to help the environment," said junior Alicia Breita.

Dozens of trees now dot the landscape of the park.

Each year students from the school pitch in to turn what was once an open field, into something even better.

"I never noticed this back here because when I would drive by it seemed kind of dull. I never really came here to play soccer or anything. I just kind of looked at it and thought it's very empty. So I'm glad we're planting trees here," Sunseri added.
