It's no secret that plenty of companies are hoping that 2010 will be the
year of 3D, and it looks like Sony has now gotten a big boost by lining up a partnership with one of the biggest events of the year: the
FIFA World Cup. As the pair have announced today, the new arrangement will see at least 25 World Cup matches produced in 3D using Sony's 3D cameras, which will be viewable through a variety of means. That includes special public viewing events in seven cities around the world (none in North America, unfortunately), an "Official 3D Film" that will be previewed at Sony Stores and other retail outlets and, last but not least, a Blu-ray of said film that will be made available at some point following the World Cup. This won't be the
first time a soccer match has been broadcast in 3D, however, and it looks like it won't be your
only option for catching some games in 3D next year either.
[Thanks, Matt]
I would love to experience this, unfortunately, I live in North America, and football isn't really accepted here... (Being a European in Canada sucks when you talk to others about sports lol)
@ALBGunner04
Are you kidding? Football is LOVED in NA. It's that "soccer" thing that nobody watches.
/sarcasm
@ALBGunner04 Soccer is accepted in most of North America. It's the biggest sport in Mexico and is large and growing in the US and Canada. You make it sound like sports aren't huge in Canada(and I don't just mean hockey, hockey and a little hockey).
@sitruc I know that it's being accepted more and more in North America (excluding Mexico, because we know that it's the most popular in Mexico). However, if I talk to my friends about the sport, most of them have no clue about what I'm talking about since most don't watch it. I know that there's a fan base strong here though.
Another thing, the MLS needs to shapen up. They need better stadiums (does NY still play in Giant Stadium with NFL field markings?). They're getting better players as each season passes which is good though.
@ALBGunner04
I know what you mean...as a fellow colonial, all I want to do sometimes is hop on the tube, get to a pub and kick back with a pint while watching some footy. Nothing better than watching the Reds smack it into the back of the onion bag. Pure class!
@NikAmi Haha you're speaking my language!
@ALBGunner04 You are correct. There needs to be not only more coverage of the MLS leage by the sports networks, but there should also be more coverage of big international games (ie. Boca Juniors vs. Real Madrid, or Grêmio vs. Manchester United).
Sounds awesome, gotta love Sony's constant innovation and push for new technology. Some hit, some miss, point is, they keep advancing us into the future!
@Almo
I myself can't wait to see what 3D from sony brings. Since I wanted a LED TV and Sony have none...I'll wait till next year see what's all the fuzz about.
@Almo
Exactly. If Sony didn't exist, the electronics that we know today wouldn't be around.
Have you ever watched a Sony film presentation of a major event? Stale and lacking any professional commentary... No thanks!
@JimL the picture can come from sony, but the narration is usually done by third parties ( usually from each tv company, from many places in the world, to have a localized version)
Donald Melanson says: it's FIFA, not FISA, so call it football and not soccer.
@Donald
Too true! More Americans need to grasp the Handegg:-

@Donald Brits came up with the word "soccer." It's short for association football.
@Almo They should've let a European editor handle it.
@d0mth0ma5 @sitruc But virtually none of us call it "soccer" except when we are being ironic.
This sounds great...can't wait...

Last time I checked, Mexico City was in North America.
Ok, I just checked again. It's still in North America.

So Gizmodo calls it the "second-biggest" sport and Engadget calls it "one of the biggest events of the year." No offense but no other sporting event on this planet comes near the World Cup in terms of revenue, duration, and popularity.
@Apish I agree... although I think its pretty close with the Olympic Games
@bangoker It is close, but the World Cup takes it I would think. (26 Billion non-unique viewers in 2006, I can't find an equivalent for Beijing).
@Apish The World Cup is the biggest single sporting event in the world as compared to the Olympics which is multiple events inclusive of football.
@3rdsun
Refer to d0mth0ma5's post above. The World Cup takes it, regardless. Besides, although the Olympics includes soccer, it is limited to players under 23 of age. Some nations come fully professional, some attend with a hybrid of professionals and amateurs, and some world football powers don't even attend.
Why not just broadcast it live in 3D, and have it played in Movie Theaters with the technology and hardware (like glasses and seats), and let the theaters charge the people for seeing the show (sames price as 3d movie).
I live in Mexico and they have already broadcasted some live soccer games in 3d that way, I guess it could be done in a global scale too.
Why has everything gone 3D? it scares me.
@townes66 They're out of ideas. Clear and simple.
It will be shit with knobs on ......
Ahh real Football!! I cant wait!!! The only sport where the entire world participates except the north and south pole. I will be ready for this.
VIVA BRASIL!!
VIVA FUTBOL!!
btw I wrote about it here: http://www.hdtvlounge.net/news/3d-world-cup/ , and let Engadget know.
It should be "Football" and "American Football", no Soccer!
This is absolutely fantastic news. This means that in all future editions of the Fifadidas World Cup, we'll be able to see the referees making a mockery of the game in 3D!! The rules changed mid-way through qualification because of Adidas' fears (France and Germany, both sponsored by Adidas, not qualifying) and the France-Ireland game was rigged. But hey, but now we'll be able to see the Adidas logo in 3D as well !!!!
"Fifa want the big teams in the World Cup. They want France in the World Cup and, it may sound silly, but they want teams sponsored by Adidas.
"Adidas sponsor the World Cup and they sponsor France. [Uefa president] Michel Platini has a lot of influence as well.
"Maybe we'd have had a better chance of going to the World Cup if it was sponsored by Umbro but that's the way the world goes at the moment."

It's a shame Spain is not part of those 7 places:
- One of the best football leagues in Europe (and best players, Mesi, Ronaldo, Xavi, Casillas)
- Eurocup champions
- Champions League champions (Barcelona)
- Best team of the Century (Real Madrid)
- etc, etc......
