Characters Who "Tame the Beast"

For some character's in popular fiction, there is a beast within that is just itching to break free. In this feature, we take a look at 11 characters who "tame the beast" in order to preserve their humanity.

"Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." - Bruce Banner, The Incredible Hulk

Like Bruce Banner and his big, green alter-ego, movies and film are filled with mild-mannered characters that have a dormant beast just waiting to show its fangs. Whether it comes out at the sight of a full moon, or when they are cut off on the highway, these inner beasts are the embodiment of a character's dark side. Others have the capability to turn into a beast whenever they like, and they must surpress that urge through sheer force of will. If this dangerous ability is not properly suppressed, it would take over and wreak havoc on all that stands in its way. In this feature, we take a look at the top 11 characters who "Tame the Beast." Read on, and Hulk out!

The Incredible Hulk

To say Bruce Banner has anger problems is an understatement. Due to an unfortunate gamma ray accident, when Banner gets peeved he transforms into the Incredible Hulk—a giant, green man-monster capable of flinging an army tank into the sun. Thankfully, Banner puts his rage to good use, as he uses his Hulk power to defend the planet along with fellow Marvel superheroes as a card-carrying Avengers member. If you're somehow unfamiliar with the Hulk, or if you're a massive fan, you can check him out this summer in Joss Whedon's The Avengers. In our opinion, actor Mark Ruffalo is looking to be one of the finest Bruce Banner's to date.

Fight Club Narrator

In Fight Club, Edward Norton's character (The Narrator) has an ass-kicking alter ego named Tyer Durden (played by a very tan Brad Pitt). Durden is everything the Narrator hopes and wishes to be: tough, self-assured, ruggedly handsome. Then again, Durden is also a complete psychopath. We learn that the Narrator was actually Tyler Durden after Durden blows up a bunch of building in the name of anarchy. Luckily, The Narrator "tames the beast" before Durden causes more destruction.

Remus Lupin

Harry Potter character Remus Lupin first appears in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban looking tired and disheveled. Harry, Ron and Hermione soon discover that he's not a hobo, but rather, their new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Still, the mystery as to his haggard appearance grows and grows as the story progresses until it is discovered that he was hiding being a werewolf. Lupin was able to "tame the beast" by taking a special potion created by his rival, Professor Snape.

Altered Beast

Altered Beast for the Sega Genesis is one of the most classic arcade games of all time. The game may be flawed (it's incredibly short and mind-numbingly straightforward), but it does feature a gameplay mechanic that was considerably revolutionary for the time it was release (1988): the ability to transform into werebears, weretigers and werewolves. Players could "tame the beast" by not collecting the spirit orbs that turn you into the character's respective monster, but walking around as a half-naked behemoth isn't as much fun.

Sam Merlotte from True Blood

Restaurateur Sam Merlotte has the best power in all of True Blood. The man can transform into any animal he sees. That means if it has a pulse and is in his line of vision, he could become it faster than you could say "Sookie Stackhouse." "Taming the beast" in this particular scenario is certainly no easy feat. It takes an incredible amount of self-control not to spend one's day turning into every animal at the zoo just for the hell of it. Another plus, is Sam Merlotte never has to deal with airlines (Alec Baldwin would give anything for this gift). All he has to do is gaze into an eagle's eyes and the sky is his for the taking.
