Everybody remembers the good ol' Pokémon of the Day Guy, right? Well, once Gold and Silver hit the shores of the US and all the hype had died down a bit, he decided to move to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to seek enlightenment. Now that every self-respecting Pokémaniac has Ruby and Sapphire on the brain, however, it's high time we revitalize the age-old tradition of bringing you your Pokémon of the Day! And, as everyone knows, there's only one thing better than a Pokémon of the Day Guy...a Pokémon of the Day Chick!

Each and every day we'll be taking a close and personal look at one of these unique creatures called Pokémon. Here you'll find all the moves you could ever want (learned, hereditary and all compatible TMs/HMs from G/S/C and R/B/Y, if applicable), breeding chains for hereditary moves, Pokédex entries, general descriptions, max stats, in-game locations, weaknesses and resistances, gameplay tips and one or more suggested movesets (SUGGESTED, people; I'm not telling you what to do) to get the most bang for your Pokébuck.

===============================INTRODUCTION==============================

Today's Pokémon is Rapidash. You all know Rapidash; she's the beautiful fire horse you slaughter over and over and over at the base of Mount Silver for mucho EXP and then promptly forget exists. Which is a shame, really; Rapidash happens to be my very favorite Fire type but is almost always abandoned by trainers in favor of Typhlosion, Charizard or Arcanine. Perhaps if more people knew how to use her Rapidash would see the light of battle more often, since she truly can be lethal in the right hands.

NAME: Rapidash
TYPE: Fire Horse (Fire)
HEIGHT: 5' 7"
WEIGHT: 209 lbs.

EVOLUTION: evolves from Ponyta at level 40

AVAILIBLE IN: Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal

LOCATION: You won't find a wild Rapidash in R/B/Y; you'll have to evolve your own from a Ponyta (which can be found in the Cinnabar Mansion in Red and Blue and on Route 7 in Yellow). Pokémon G/S/C players have the luxury of picking up a Rapidash on Route 28 (at level 42) or at the base of Mount Silver (at level 44).

Many Pokémon were devastated by (though a few actually benefitted from) the special stat split that took place between RBY and GSC. Rapidash, however, is not one of them. Her special stats remained untouched in the crossover, so she essentially plays the same way in GSC as she did in RBY.

In short, the moves that Rapidash learns naturally really suck, so you'll want to dust off your old Red, Blue or Yellow catridge and trade Rapidash over for some of those precious TMs that somehow didn't find their way to GSC. Rapidash's Defense is nowhere near impressive while her Speed allows her to take the initiative most of the time, so it'd be a good idea to toss up a Reflect right off the bat. This will give you a fighting chance against Earthquake-happy Normal types (and Ground types, obviously, though why anybody would leave Rapidash in against a Ground type in the first place is beyond me), and will also bolster your next Pokémon's defenses for the next few turns should something unfortunate befall Rapidash.

Horn Drill actually works well on Rapidash thanks to her awesome Speed; many trainers aren't willing to take a chance on a 30% accurate move but I've had some phenomenal luck with it...versatility isn't Rapidash's strong point, so there aren't many moves that would fit in that slot as well anyway.

Double-Edge is arguably the best Normal-type move in the game and will feed well off of Rapidash's respectable Attack. Of course, if you actually want to play Rapidash as a FIRE type you're going to want Flamethrower/Fire Blast (you'll have to see the Move Tutor for Flamethrower; otherwise give her TM38 or let her learn Fire Blast naturally at level 61 in G/S/C). I remain convinced based on Rapidash's stats and move options that she is simply a Normal type (and a darn good one at that) in Fire's clothing, but you'll be happy to have a Fire-type move on board if you ever run into a Scizor...and the Same Type Attack Bonus is always nice.

I recommend you let Rapidash hold Focus Band or Bright Powder, both of which basically give you a shot at an extra turn in battle (whether it be because your opponent missed an attack or because what should have been a "killing blow" failed to kill). Rapidash's HP and Defense aren't high enough to justify using Leftovers; she'll be gone before they have a chance to make a difference. I don't usually like Berries on Pokémon with low Defense since many trainers will opt to go for the quick, crushing defeat as opposed to messing around with your stats (though a Przcureberry may be a good investment since attempting to slow Rapidash down would be in any rival trainer's best interest).

As I've said before, Rapidash tends to play more like a Normal type than a Fire type. You can of course attempt to type-match by pitting her against Grass, Steel, Bug and Ice (though all current Ice types are dual types and most of them are paired with Water, which is bad new for Rapidash) types and keeping her away from Ground, Water and Rock types, but Rapidash is ideally suited (IMHO) for going toe-to-toe (or hoof-to-paw or whatever) with types to whom she's Neutral and taking the upper hand (hoof, sorry!) through sheer brute force.

Best of luck to you in your quest to master this magnificent fiery beast, and keep your eyes peeled for tomorrow's Pokémon of the Day!
