Selinsgrove Area Board Approves Teacher Cuts

The Selinsgrove Area School Board Tuesday night approved a plan that calls for teacher layoffs and tax increases.

The district's original proposal involved cutting 15 teaching positions.

Superintendent Chad Cohrs said now 17 positions will be eliminated.  In addition to the cuts, the plan calls for increasing property taxes.

The increase means about $62 more a year for the average household in the Selinsgrove Area School District.

Teacher Layoffs Possible in Selinsgrove

The Selinsgrove Area School District meets Tuesday night to discuss a proposal to layoff teachers and raise property taxes.  The superintendent said the layoffs are needed to prevent cuts to extra-curricular activities.

The Selinsgrove Area School Board meets at 7 p.m. and is expected to vote on a plan that the district's superintendent said would trim $700,000 from the budget by laying off 15 teachers.

The Selinsgrove Area School District has almost 3,000 students and just over 200 teachers, but that second number may change if the school board approves a plan for layoffs.

"Districts are being forced to examine how they operate and where they can cut expenses.  As a school district, the biggest expense is personnel," said Superintendent Chad Cohrs.

"That's very tough.  Nobody wants to be laid off.  I'm hoping they're exploring other options, because that's not good for anybody," said Alice Stelter of Selinsgrove.

Beavertown's Mayor's Newest Title

The mayor of a relatively small borough in Snyder County has received a big honor.

Out of all the mayors in the United States, Mayor Cloyd Wagner of Beavertown has the title of Mayor of the Week until Wednesday. It's part of Reader's Digest magazine's We Hear You America contest.

Mayor Wagner said the honor still hasn't sunken in.

Wagner has been mayor of Beavertown in Snyder County for more than two decades. Now that's he's been named Mayor of the Week by Readers Digest magazine, he's trying to get used to the national recognition.

"It came as a surprise and, quite frankly, I wear 27 different hats and I'm so busy it hasn't really soaked in," Mayor Wagner said.

He is one of only 16 mayors in the U.S. to receive the honor from Reader's Digest. Wagner said he was chosen because he helps make Beavertown a better place.

Many people who live and work there agree.

Local Scout to Present National Report

A Boy Scout from Northumberland County will be shaking hands with the Speaker of the House, members of Congress and maybe even President Barack Obama.

In a few days Boy Scout John Rehm heads to Washington D.C. to present the Boy Scouts' annual report to the nation.

Rehm is a freshman at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove. He said he enjoys his classes, but his true passion is scouting.

The 18 year old from Turbotville has been involved with the Boy Scouts since he was six years old.  Now he is an Eagle Scout and in December he received a huge honor.

"Each section has a youth representative which they sent down to Dallas, Texas. They elected a national chief, a vice chief and four regional chiefs. Out of 52 people they chose me to be national chief," Rehm explained.
