Snow Brings Smiles to Wayne County

Some people in the Poconos spent this leap day dealing with snow.

The snow fell all morning long throughout Wayne County. In total nearly two inches of snow covered several areas.

In Waymart, Dennis Boguski was hard at work plowing the parking lot of the Shur Save Grocery Store with a huge smile on his face because this plow assignment is putting some money in his pocket.

"Me and a friend have a little business together. We plow about six lots here in Waymart," said Boguski.

Another group of workers in Honesdale  also praised the snowfall. The more snow, the more work, the more pay.

"It's a good thing.  It generates revenue.  We got guys plowing, we got guys shoveling," said Al Pike of Pioneer Construction.

The shoveling doesn`t stop with that crew but continues with the owner of Tye Dye Cafe in Downtown Honesdale.

Waking Up to Winter

After the 50 degree temperatures we had earlier this week, it was quite a surprise Friday morning when some people in our area woke up to more than six inches of snow.

Shoveling was the activity of the day in Wayne County. Many people woke up to more snow than they expected and got right to work shoveling their driveways.

Earl Riesler started shoveling his driveway in Honesdale early and said it's no big deal to him, he's used to shoveling piles of snow.

"Oh god no, no no. I do this here. This will take me 15 to 20 minutes at that," said Riesler.

Next door neighbor David Mitchell is happy to finally have snow and said now it finally feels like winter.

"It's part of the season, you get snow , you enjoy it, but then you also have to work at it, shovel, make a snowman, play in it, all that types of stuff," said Mitchell.

Fire Destroys Home

Flames ripped through a home Saturday afternoon in Wayne County.

It happened at a house on Cemetery and Savitz Road in Salem Township.

The chief said when his crews arrived they found flames shooting through the roof of the home.

A neighbor said he saw smoke, kicked in the door, and rescued several pets.

A state police fire marshal will investigate the cause.

The American Red Cross said the family who lives there is out of town.

The home is a total loss, and the Red Cross does plan to help the fire victims.

Burglary at The Dime Bank

A bank in Wayne County is cleaning up after an early morning burglary.

State police said someone smashed the glass front doors of The Dime Bank in Damascus shortly after midnight Friday and got inside the bank.

Investigators said the person then forced open drawers at some of the teller stations and took rolls of coins.

Troopers said surveillance cameras in the bank caught the whole thing on video.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call state police at Honesdale.

Finally Seeing Some Snow

In the higher elevations of our area, we saw something on Thursday that we haven't seen much of this winter, shoveling and plowing snow.

The conditions varied considerably from place to place. Some spots saw almost all rain, but drive a mile away and there were a few inches of snow.

Jefferson Township had a couple inches of rain, but a couple miles away in Jessup there was nothing.

In the Poconos there were snow-covered roads. What is usually a normal part of winter in Tobyhanna is a rarity this year.

The valleys may have seen rain, but the Poconos saw snow, one of only a few times this winter.

“We had a real mild winter and now it's starting to snow closer to spring. It's kind of crazy," said Susan Earl of Tannersville.

Earl was heading home surprised dealing with all this snow.

Health Clinic Closed in Waymart

The health care company that has decided to close Marion Community Hospital in Carbondale has closed another clinic in Wayne County.

The problem is patients could not get their records Monday from that closed clinic.

Maxis Health Systems owns Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale and the Family Medical Center in Waymart. The company told patients the Waymart clinic would close at the end of this week, but when patients showed up Monday morning to pick up their medical records the doors were locked.

Confusion followed the sudden closure of the Family Medical Center in Waymart. More than a dozen patients waited outside the clinic Monday morning looking for answers since the staff was gone and the doors were locked.

"I mean, I'm outraged how, without a legal time limit, can they just shut the door when they send you a letter saying they're even going to be here another week," said Anita Thompson of Waymart.
