Unisa's history
In January 2004, the former Unisa merged with Technikon Southern Africa and incorporated the distance education component of Vista University (Vudec) to form the new Unisa. The merger brought together vast resources and infrastructure, while consolidating the knowledge bases built up over the years by the three former institutions. Legal establishment: On 1 January 2004, the new Unisa officially came into being through the merger of the former University of South Africa and Technikon Southern Africa with the incorporation of the Vista University Distance Education Campus, Vudec.

We are a reputable, comprehensive, flexible and accessible Open Distance Learning institution that is motivating a future generation. We offer internationally accredited qualifications and have world-class resources that inspire learners to create meaningful futures on their own terms. Our vision “Towards the African university in the service of humanity” drives us to find answers to Africa’s education and developmental problems. By forming partnerships in Africa and throughout the world, we are able to help the people of Africa achieve their dreams.
Management structure
UNISA is privileged to have the active support and involvement of some of South Africa's most respected, forward-thinking leaders. Our Chancellor is Judge Bernard Ngoepe, Judge President of the Transvaal Provincial Division of the High Court of South Africa. The UNISA Council, which sets the strategic direction of the University, is chaired by Dr Mathews Phosa, a leading businessman and former Premier of Mpumalanga Province.
