Man kills two doctors, self in town near Ramstein

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany -- A 78-year-old man shot and killed two German doctors and then apparently shot himself in the town of Weilerbach, near Ramstein Air Base  on Monday evening, local police said.

A policeman and an assistant in the clinic were slightly injured. A police spokeswoman said she did not know of any Americans being hurt.

The shooter walked into the office of the doctors, reportedly aged 48 and 63, on Monday afternoon around 5:15 and began shooting, a police statement said.

Police later found the shooter dead in his apartment house, a police statement said. Police believe he shot himself. The motive for the shooting was unclear, police said. It was believed the shooter was a patient at the practice.

On Monday afternoon, a post on the Facebook page of the Army Garrison Kaiserslautern warned that there had been a shooting in Weilerbach and advised people to exercise caution.

Later, an updated posted by Ramstein Air Base said, “The shooting has been confirmed and the suspect was apprehended by the local authorities at 6:15 p.m. However, Polizei are evacuating five houses in the area due to an unknown substance that they found. No U.S. families are affected. Please continue to exercise caution and remain vigilant.”

Local police said the investigation was continuing.
