Portfolio

When applying for an education in the artistic field you will sometimes be asked to send in a portfolio along with your application form. The portfolio will help you showcase your work to prove your artistic talent and can include everything from scetches and written ideas to published work.

Your portfolio should represent yourself and your style of art or design in a good and evident way. This is the only way for the school you are applying for to get a look at the artistic side of you that is not visible through any test score. If you have a large portfolio it might be a good idea to pick and present the pieces most suitable for that school or program in particular.

Portfolio Formats

A traditional portfolio is usually kept in a simple binder to give your work the attention it deserves. You may be asked to bring you portfolio to an interview; in this case the traditional physical portfolio is a good choice. If you are asekd to send your work along with your application a digital portfolio might be a better idea. The digital portfolio can be showcased on a website (e-portfolio) or sent to the school on a CD or DVD. In the case of an admission interview this option might be a bit of a hazzle so it is best to always keep both a peper-based and a digital portfolio. The school will most likely specify what format they prefer you to send your portfolio in.

Updating Your Portfolio

During your education at a college or university you will constantly be able to add new pieces to your portfolio making it an even better reflection of you as an artist or designer. If your did not have a portfolio when you started your education you will surely have one by the time you graduate. Your portfolio will be your greatest asset in looking for a job in any artistic field.
