All-female derbies are on a roll

IKEGO HOUSING AREA – Yokosuka Sushi Rollers joined members of Yokota Air Base’s Scary Blossoms and a member of Camp Zama’s Killer Katanas for a Heartbreak’her Bout on Feb. 12 at the Ikego Bubble Dome.

Members from all three women’s roller derby groups combined to square off as two teams for the Yokosuka USO-sponsored bout, with the Bloody Valentines beating the Blackhearts, 140-125. Valentine’s coach and jammer, Talia “Talliwhack’her” Moretty became lead jammer, strategically stopping Blackhearts’ scoring more points.

DOD opens more jobs to military women

WASHINGTON - Military women, particularly soldiers, will see more than 14,000 new job or assignment opportunities because of policy changes the Defense Department announced Feb. 9.

The changes are included in a report the department submitted to Congress, based in part on findings the Military Leadership Diversity Commission reported in March 2011.

Plum blossoms herald springtime

Envoys from Japan were once so captivated by China’s “ume,” or plum, blossoms that they imported them to dazzle Japanese nobles. It worked. In fact, during the Nara Period (710 to 784), they were more popular here than cherry blossoms. This is for good reason.
