Building: Swasey Chapel, 1924
Architect/Designer: Arnold Brunner of Cleveland
History: Swasey Chapel was the first building in the ambitious "Greater Denison" plan of 1917 created by architects Ernest Flagg, Arnold Brunner and the firm of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, renowned for his design of New York City's Central Park.
Building Style: Bedford limestone and Harvard brick laid in Flemish bond. English Stuart Revival style influenced by the London churches of Sir Christopher Wren.
Named For: The chapel was named in honor of Dr. Ambrose Swasey who funded its construction and also the brick chapel walk. The chimes in the chapel tower are a memorial to his wife, Mrs. Lavinia Marston Swasey.
Current Use: Today, the chapel is used for religious services, all-college convocations and world-class musical performances sponsored by the Vail Arts Series.
